SSFL 26: St Mary’s stay first, Benedict’s, “Naps” and Fatima chase—and St Anthony’s get maiden win

St Mary’s College remained in first position today, after a 3-1 win over Malick Secondary at Serpentine Road in St Clair, but the southern heavyweights are closing in fast—as the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) SporTT Premiership Division moved to Round Nine today.

First half goals by Nadeem Grant and Jaedon Thomas put St Mary’s on their way today, although it took a second half stoppage time goal from Jaylon Manswell to calm the nerves, after Omilio Millard temporarily halved the deficit for Malick.

Coach Cornell Glen might have breathed a sigh of relief, as the ‘Saints’ snapped a streak of three successive draws to return to winning row.

However, St Benedict’s College pulled within a point of the leaders, thanks to a win over Signal Hill Secondary—with attacker Kanye Glasgow on the scorecard again at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

An own goal by young Signal Hill defender Kisean Grant separated the two teams by halftime, in favour of the hosts. And, nine minutes after the resumption, Glasgow struck for the La Romaine Lions with a cool, clipped finish past opposing custodian Kaleb Romeo from a one-on-one opportunity.

The Tobagonian visitors were never out of the game, though, and did pull a goal back.

Versatile midfielder Amar Allie Baccas beat Benedict’s goalkeeper Naftali Charles with a cracking strike in the top left hand corner from roughly 30 yards. Charles did not have time to twitch!

But it was too little, too late for Signal Hill, who slipped two places to fourth place in the 17-team standings.

Naparima College, the defending champions, are fifth with 16 points—five shy of St Mary’s, although the southerners have a game in hand. No team can match their champs’ current streak of five successive wins though.

Hillview College, who are winless in their last three games, might have thought they would leave San Fernando with a point—after forward Cristiano Hinds’ sixth goal of the season cancelled out Adasa Richardson’s first half strike for Naparima.

But, four minutes from the end, playmaker Donovan Drayton popped up with the winning item to give the hosts all three points.

Sixteen-year-old Richardson, incidentally, is the Division’s second highest scorer with 10 goals.

However, Fatima College forward Jahaem “Yellow” Bailey added to his league high tally with his 13th goal of the season—from the penalty spot—which topped off a 3-1 triumph for his school away to Queen’s Royal College.

Fatima have four wins and a draw from their last five games and are three points behind St Mary’s in third position.

The biggest movers of the day were San Juan North Secondary, though, as they climbed out of the relegation zone and into 11th place—courtesy of a 4-1 home win over Mucurapo West Secondary.

Nicholas Cyrus scored twice for the “San Juan Kings”, who were tied at 1-1 with Mucurapo West at the interval but roared to life in the second half.

The bottom four schools at the end of the season, will be relegated to the Championship Division.

There was life at the foot of the table too, where St Anthony’s College managed their first win of the season with a 3-1 triumph over erratic easterners, Arima North Secondary.

Gifted an early item after “Dial Dynamos” custodian Micah Greenaway fumbled a speculative effort from Jeheed Magloire, the “Westmoorings Tigers” pulled away through a double from Marley Ramdass to seal a deserved win.

Jaeden Samuel got the lone item for Arima North, via the penalty spot.

St Benedict’s and Fatima will put their title credentials to the test on Saturday, when they meet at a venue to be decided.
