SSFL 26: “Saints” near title with win over Benedict’s; St Anthony’s leave St Augustine in trouble, while Mucurapo West edge TCE

St Mary’s College took a massive step towards their maiden Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Sportt Premiership Division title yesterday, as the “Saints” secured a 2-0 win over fifth placed St Benedict’s College at Serpentine Road.

Winger Nadeem Grant got his fourth goal of the season, with a speculative effort in the eighth minute that seemed to deflect past the St Benedict’s goalkeeper.

Let’s just say that the swagger-ific celebration was more aesthetically pleasing than the finish itself.

St Mary’s had not conceded in three straight matches before kickoff. And, even with the likes of National Under-17 Team attacker Kanye Glasgow in their line-up, the “La Romain Lions” could not prevent Saints custodian Donnell Thomas from stretching his time without a goal to upwards of 360 minutes.

That’s over six hours since Thomas last picked the ball out of his net!

In the 63rd minute, St Mary’s added another trademark set piece item too, as forward Jaedon Thomas headed in from an Eran McLeod corner kick to double their lead.

And a 2-0 final score kept the Saints two points clear of second placed Signal Hill Secondary, and five ahead of Naparima College—although “Naps” have a game in hand.

Signal Hill won 2-0 at home against visiting Arima North Secondary, with a goal in each half from captain J’meke Watkins and Jediael Marcelle. While at Lewis Street in San Fernando, forward Adasa Richardson got his 15th goal of the season in a 3-0 win over Queen’s Royal College.

At the other side of the table, St Augustine Secondary left themselves with a mountain to climb to avoid relegation, as they lost 3-0 at home against a resurgent St Anthony’s College.

With three away games to go against Hillview College, Arima North and Speyside Secondary respectively, and a closing home match against Fatima College, St Augustine badly needed points on the board to pull clear—at least temporarily—from the bottom four schools.

Instead, within 60 seconds, the “Green Machine” were already behind, as Malachi Neaves got St Anthony’s a dream start at Warren Street, St Augustine.

Giovanni Bartholomew doubled the lead for the “Westmoorings Tigers” late in the first half before National Under-14 player Darion Alzola got a third item from off the substitutes bench, in the second period.

After being rooted to the bottom of the standings for much of September and the start of October, St Anthony’s look safe from the drop at present.

If St Augustine face gloomier prospects, it is virtually lights out for their eastern colleagues, Trinity College East, who lost 3-2 away to Mucurapo West Secondary today in a bottom of the table clash.

Mucurapo led 2-0 at the half through Amenhotep Harper and Nazim Skinner, and, although an Elijah Diaz item seven minutes after the restart gave the visiting “Blue Hawks” a glimmer of hope, the home team held on to snap a run of seven straight games without a point.

Mucurapo West climbed to 14th place with the win, just a point shy from San Juan North Secondary, who are above the relegation zone with nine points.

Trinity East have five points in total and only remaining fixtures against St Benedict’s (away), Trinity College (Moka) and Signal Hill (both at home) left. They must win at least two of those fixtures to have any chances of staying in the top flight.

At the top of the standings, St Mary’s are on a bye this weekend, while they are away to Trinity Moka on Tuesday 3 November and host Signal Hill and San Juan North next.

If they can maintain their razzle dazzle for three more fixtures, coach Cornell Glen would savour a historic first for the Blue and White Stripes.
