Did Bruno Fernandes ever go home when the 2020/21 England Premier League season ended last May? There were no signs of rust at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, as the Portuguese maestro tallied a hattrick in a comprehensive 5-1 Manchester United mauling of Leeds United.
The devastating showing, which ensured his hot streak continues like a runaway bush fire, made Fernandes the hottest property in Wired868’s Fantasy Football challenge on week one.
And, yes, early leader Keston Paul did not miss out. Paul’s ‘No DMs FC’ captained Liverpool’s Mo Salah for 34 points while he also included Fernandes and stylish West Ham midfielder Said Benrahma (12 points).
Oh, and he used a ‘bench boost’… on the first flipping match day of the season!
The piece of daring took Paul to 120 points and an early first place spot. He is followed closely by Mark Fermin’s ‘Watch Yuh Legs FC’ on 117 points and Manzur Ahmed’s ‘Bomb Squad’ on 116 points.
Fermin, who did NOT use a wild card, also had Salah, Fernandes and Benrahma, but threw in West Ham forward Michail Antonio (13 points) and swashbuckling Chelsea left back Marco Alonso (15 points for good measure.
While Ahmed had the foresight to include Tottenham Spurs attacker Heung-Min Son in his Bomb Squad. Well played, good sir.
And how did Lasana Liburd do? Well, ‘Birdie Wick 868’ did have Fernandes, Salah and Antonio. But its overall week one score of 85 was only good enough for a not-so-honourable 212 place.
The thing now start though. Blow that whistle again, ref!
