St Anthony’s College will seek their first National Intercol final of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division era next Thursday, after they got past Speyside High today with a 1-0 win at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.
A late strike by forward Jean-Marc Thomas broke Speyside’s resistance and gave the “Westmoorings Tigers” a shot at the last trophy—and arguably the most important one—of the SSFL season.
(Incidentally, there is still no start date for the SSFL Big Five competition that will determine the three promoted teams for the 2024 Premier Division competition.)
St Anthony’s, the North Zone champions, face southern powerhouse Presentation College (San Fernando) from 5.15pm next Thursday in the National Intercol final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
It was 1-0 to the “Pres Lions” when those two schools met during the regular season at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. In fact, Presentation goalkeeper and captain Kanye Lazarus has not picked the ball out of the back of his net once in the 2023 Intercol competition so far.
So, Tigers playmaker Aalon Wilson-Wright should have no doubt about the scale of the task ahead.
First, St Anthony’s needed to book their ticket to the final, though. In the eight seasons since the SSFL launched the Premier Division era, the Westmoorings Tigers managed four zonal titles—yet this is only their second trip to the national final.
It will get even harder from here.
