Greaves, Jangoo get WI ODI call-ups to face Bangladesh

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) selection panel announced two changes to the West Indies One Day International (ODI) team, as the squad was named for the three match CG United ODI home series against Bangladesh in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Barbadian all-rounder Justin Greaves and Trinidad and Tobago wicketkeeper-batsman Amir Jangoo are both in the West Indies’ 15-man squad for what CWI dubbed the “West Indies Home for Christmas” series.

They replace teenage batsman Jewel Andrew and veteran spinner Hayden Walsh Jr respectively from the West Indies team that defeated England 2-1 in an ODI series last month.

Greaves, 30, and Jangoo, 27, both forced their way into the regional squad, according to the CWI Media, on the back of “splendid form” in the CG United Super50 competition.

Greaves scored three consecutive centuries in the Super50, along with a maiden Test century against Bangladesh last month. And Jangoo topped theSuper50’s scoring chart with 446 runs in seven innings at an average of 89.20.

“Greaves is capable of batting anywhere in the top six and brings that genuine all-round ability to the squad, which is welcomed at this stage,” West Indies head coach Daren Sammy told the CWI Media, “while Jangoo’s prowess in the CG United Super50 shows his flexibility to bring another dimension to our batting unit.”

Andrew, the dashing 17-year-old Antigua and Barbuda batsman, will continue his development in a batting camp at the Chennai Academy—alongside “a cohort of emerging regional batters”—where he will “concentrate on batting in spinning conditions”.

For the players selected to face Bangladesh, Sammy said it is another opportunity to stake a claim for regular selection.

“We continue to build towards the main target of the ICC Men’s 50-over World Cup,” said Sammy, “where we are looking to broaden the pool of players even with the short-term objectives of winning series, especially at home and building momentum on the recent win against England.”
