Intercol 24: ‘Zoom Zoom’ bags hattrick in Benedict’s win; ‘Naps’ penalise ‘Pres Lions’

Derrel “Zoom Zoom” Garcia continues to write the story of the 2024 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) season with almost every move.

Today, Garcia settled St Benedict’s College’s South Zone Intercol semifinal contest inside the first 45 minutes of play, with a first half hattrick as the “La Romaine Lions” mauled second tier outfit, Pleasantville Secondary, 6-0 at the Mahaica Sporting Complex.

Garcia, the St Benedict’s captain and forward, has 22 goals from 11 appearances this season—an astonishing return of two items per match.

Next Friday, it will be the turn of Naparima College to try and stop him. “Naps” secured their own pathway to the South final via kicks from the penalty mark against fierce rivals, Presentation College (San Fernando).

The “Pres Lions” were favourites going into the contest. But after a goalless 90 minutes, Naparima won the shootout 4-1 to make a date with St Benedict’s.

Before that, the SSFL Disciplinary Committee will rule on the validity of Garcia’s registration this season.

One way or the other, Garcia’s fate looks set to decide the destination of the SSFL’s major trophies in 2024.
