Intercol 24: Fatima hold off Malick in thriller; QRC edge St Anthony’s

Fatima College are still alive in the 2024 Coca Cola National Intercol competition, but they were pushed to the brink by Malick Secondary in a seven-goal thriller at Diego Martin Complex today.

In the end, Fatima held on for a 4-3 win. They will meet Queen’s Royal College in next Thursday’s North Intercol final after the “Royalians” edged St Anthony’s College 1-0 in the second match of a double header.

Philip Nelson got the lone item for QRC. And it was sufficient to eliminate the North Zone Intercol champions.

One goal was not nearly enough in the opening game, though.

Luke Correia drew first blood for Fatima, only for Malick to come roaring back with items from Josante Duncan and Jordan Ferdinand. Malick went into the interval ahead 2-1.

Free-scoring Fatima midfielder Caden Trestrail levelled scores at 2-2 in the second half. But, again, Malick regained the lead through a Jeremiah Gabriel header.

Fatima would not be denied though. Left back Micaiah Leach got their second equaliser of the afternoon before a handball call paved the way for defender Matthew Barrington to settle the contest from the penalty spot.

The Intercol heads south tomorrow, as St Benedict’s College face Pleasantville Secondary from 3.30pm in one semifinal at the Mahaica Sporting Complex while Presentation College (San Fernando) and Naparima College clash from 4.30pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.
