SSFL 26: SporTT Premiership kicks off with SSFL Cup and all-Tobago clash—full fixtures included

The 2026 Secondary Schools Football League kicks off tomorrow with the ceremonial Boys and Girls Super Cup at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

Reigning Premier Division and National Intercol champions Naparima College face 2025 Premier Division runners-up St Benedict’s College from 5.30pm, while, in the opening game, Girls National Intercol Champions Pleasantville Secondary tackle Big Five finalists, Signal Hill Secondary from 3.30pm.

Pleasantville and Signal Hill were due to square off in the 2025 Girls Big Five final, only for the game to be abandoned due to the travel issues that blighted last season’s competition.

Nine months later, the young ladies of Pleasantville and Signal Hill will finally do battle, albeit with amended teams and for an arguably less illustrious trophy.

Once again, the girls teams will continue to play in their zones, with the SSFL executive, led by president Merere Gonzales, unable to fund a Premier-style competition with the best teams from each zone.

Of course, the Boys Premier Division was also under threat this year, after schools initially voted to exclude Tobago—so as to avoid the cost of crossing the seabridge.

An injection of cash from the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) addressed that problem, and also led to a symbolic change in the competition.

In early August, the SSFL unveiled fixtures for the Azaad Mohammed-Khan Premiership 2026—a name change that paid homage to the late veteran football administrator and SSFL general secretary/ treasurer.

After SporTT’s financial intervention though, which covers the cost of inter-island travel for Trinidad schools and quite a bit more, the 2026 competition was rechristened the SSFL SporTT Premiership 2026, with the adjoinder “in memory of the late Azaad Mohammed-Khan”.

The first league match of the new season will be played in Tobago on Saturday, between heavyweights Signal Hill Secondary and newly promoted Speyside Secondary.

It is a fixture that would otherwise have been played on Saturday 31 October. However, with the Tobago Carnival at its peak on that weekend, the SSFL wisely decided to bring forward the all-Tobago clash. Speyside Recreation Ground

The problem, though, is the late confirmation of the fixtures means that the Speyside Recreation Ground was already booked for a Tobago Football Association (TFA) affair, and football venues are scarce on the eastern end of the island.

Signal Hill refused to postpone the game and, in the end, Speyside were forced to concede home advantage and play the match at Shaw Park instead—barely 15 minutes’ drive from Signal Hill but roughly an hour from Speyside.

All Premiership schools see competitive action for the first time on Wednesday 16 September, with eight games across the country.

With Naparima on a bye, the pick of the round one matches are arguably St Benedict’s trip to Trinity College (Moka) and St Anthony’s College’s home contest against ambitious newly promoted team and 2025 Championship Division Big Five winners, Hillview College.

Presentation College (San Fernando) versus Arima North Secondary has traditionally been a tight, tense affair—and those two schools meet at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

St Mary’s College and St Augustine Secondary are both expected to have strengthened for 2026, so their schools will get a taste of their firepower when they clash at Serpentine Road in St Clair.

And Fatima College, in their second season under coach Kerdyn Moe, will want to re-establish themselves early, as they host Malick Secondary on Mucurapo Road.

All games on match day one start at 3.40pm.

After the SSFL executive opted to save Malick from relegation last season, due to the boardroom wrangling associated with the seabridge issues, the competition has 17 teams in 2026.

At the end of the season, four teams will be relegated rather than the usual three.

The race for the title and the battle to avoid demotion, as always, should keep local school football fans engrossed over the next three months.
