Da Silva returns as WI “A” captain for S/Africa tour, three newcomers included

Wicketkeeper/batsman Joshua Da Silva will return as captain for the West Indies “A” team next week, as they travel to South Africa for four unofficial Tests against South Africa “A” from 21 November to 8 December.

Da Silva is one of four players that represented West Indies in the drawn Test against India in July who will also perform duties with the “A” team. The others are top order batsmen Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kirk McKenzie and spinner Kevin Sinclair.

The “A” team, led by head coach Andre Coley, also retains a nucleus of the squad that prevailed 1-0 against Bangladesh “A” in June.

The quartet of Alick Athanaze, Raymon Reifer, Veerasammy Permaul and Anderson Phillip will not travel to South Africa.

However, top order batsman Zachary McCaskie, wicket-keeper/batsman Tevin Imlach and pacer Akeem Jordan are included. Pacers Jayden Seales and Shermon Lewis also add Test experience to the travelling party.

Head selector Sir Desmond Haynes said the trip to South Africa is part of Cricket West Indies’ investment in the region’s developing players.

“We had a very good ‘A’ Team tour to Bangladesh earlier this year, when we saw a number of players improve and grow,” Haynes told the CWI Media. “That tour was great for development in the red ball format—we saw some excellent individual performances which led to the team’s overall success. Now with continued investment by CWI in our players, we want to see the same kind of progress on this trip to South Africa.

“Da Silva did an outstanding job as captain in the ‘Tests’ in Bangladesh and he is again the captain for this tour.”

Haynes also called up right-handed batsman Kevlon Anderson, fast bowler Shamar Joseph, and allrounder Abhijai Mansingh for their first senior international tour with the “A” team. All three made their first-class debuts earlier this year.

“Anderson is a young batsman who has benefitted immensely from his time in the West Indies Academy, and we saw his quality of batsmanship in the Headley-Weekes Tri Series,” said Haynes. “Mansingh showed quality with bat and ball in the first-class competition and gets this opportunity to showcase his skills and progress.

“Joseph is a young fast bowler who has impressed everyone with his genuine pace, his tremendous fitness and a huge desire to gain more knowledge about the game. You can see he wants to learn and get better.”
