Hart: T&T were decent but…; Los Ticos sting Soca Warriors in Port of Spain

They came, they saw and they conquered.

Costa Rica’s performance last night against Trinidad and Tobago was not scintillating or jaw-breaking. But the Central Americans were measured and patient in their execution at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, and now they sit atop of CONCACAF’S Hex; albeit after one game.

“Los Ticos” cannot afford to rest on their laurels either, as a visit from the United States, who suffered a 2-1 home loss to Mexico yesterday, awaits them in three days time.

Last night, the visitors and their small posse were able to shrug off the combative Khaleem Hyland and the tricky Joevin Jones to leave this country’s capital smiling from ear to ear.

Substitute Joel Campbell had no small part to play in Costa Rica’s win and the visiting coach alluded to his impact in the post-match conference.

“Our game is a combination game. And that’s what we did. We tried to take advantage of [Trinidad and Tobago] being tired in the second half,” said coach Oscar Ramirez, through his translator. “And Campbell was introduced to help [our] combination play.”

Prior to Campbell’s introduction, the hosts appeared to be going toe-to-toe with Los Ticos—or at least holding them at arm’s length—as Hyland worked overtime to close down Christian Bolanos and Bryan Ruiz in the midfield while Kevan George intercepted would-be through passes at will.

However, Trinidad and Tobago’s approach was nothing short of what Ramirez expected.

“The game was [just] what I had expected [it to be],” said Ramirez. “Trinidad and Tobago had very good transition but one of the [main] things for Costa Rica was to disrupt the ball and counter Trinidad and Tobago’s strengths.”

And after long periods of sideways passing and an apparent inside game of ‘cat and mouse’ with the hosts, Ramirez decided that it was time to go for the jugular.

“We waited for the right time to score and this was key to changing the pace of the game… In the second half, I felt as though I could change things to be more aggressive. Marcos [Ureña] is a more a forward who runs through spaces while Joel [Campbell] is more of a pivot centre forward and that made a big difference late in the game.”

Los Ticos had lulled their opponents into a false state of comfort. And all it took was an incisive Campbell pass and some sleeping down the Trinidad and Tobago left flank to break the deadlock in the 64th minute.

One week ago, Trinidad and Tobago coach Stephen Hart stressed that his team must be mindful of lapses in concentration—which he calculated to account for 60 to 70 percent of their goals conceded—against the “most balanced” team in CONCACAF.

So how would the National Senior Team coach respond the 2-0 defeat?

Though disappointed with his team’s concession of two second half goals, Hart stated that he saw an all-round decent team performance and he pointed to what worked for the boys in “Red, White and Black” on the night.

“I thought we did well,” said Hart. “What we did was we took away the pockets that they wanted to receive the ball in, which was [Bolanos] and [Ruiz]. And [we tried to] make them play the ball wide first before we [went] to press it.

“And I thought we were doing okay with that and then they tried to get [Azofeifa] on the ball off of the three centre backs. And he ended up the playmaker. And both Kenwyne and Jomal contained him quite well. But as I said, I am disappointed.”

With playmaker Kevin Molino serving a two-game internal suspension for a breach of team discipline and John Bostock still to make his Trinidad and Tobago debut, Hart was forced to look for a new ‘number 10’ option. And he went for the diminutive  Mexico-based attacking midfielder Jomal Williams.

Although Hart pointed to Williams’ good defensive work, his play on the attacking end left a lot to be desired, apart from his spectacular volleyed attempt in the 32nd minute.

But Hart was sympathetic with the former W Connection player, who usually thrives on the left flank.

“[Jomal] worked very, very hard. And unfortunately, in that position you have the least amount of space in a football field. So if you play in that position the objective is to try and get turned or try and get the ball facing the opposition goal and then make the final pass or try and get a shot.

“Costa Rica did two things very well. They took away the space which he operates in, so he was always in a tight situation [where he was] bouncing the ball back [to a teammate]. And they contained Joevin Jones coming inside with two men. So they did their homework on him.”

Hart suggested Williams was given the nod in the ‘number 10’ role to aid Joevin and Cordell Cato with dribbling penetration in the final third. But on a few occasions last night, it appeared as though Joevin had to try and break down the five-man Costa Rican defence all on his own.

Hart acknowledged the individual ability of the Seattle Sounders utility player, but he also touched on his tendency to slack off on the defensive end.

“I think Joevin Jones is a fantastic player when he gets the ball [but] in the first half he put us under a lot of pressure by not doing any defensive work at all. And then I had a little go at him in the dressing room because he has a lot of quality. But you only get to play with a football for three minutes out of the ninety and it was only a matter of adjusting his positioning and he did very well in the second half…”

But what about the lack of support for Joevin, who was often faced with two and three players in white shirts?

Were the fullbacks instructed to stay at home more often than not?

“No, no [the fullbacks weren’t instructed to be less attacking] but we talk a lot about getting our distances right and sometimes when Joevin gets the ball he doesn’t recognise his position when he receives the ball on the field and he just wants to go; Levi [Garcia] does it as well,” Hart said. “So it’s up to the fullbacks to get on and support them. You do those things in practices but when the game starts and [the opposition] pin you back like that and you are worried about running and having to come back…”

Trinidad and Tobago only managed one shot on goal, which came from defender Carlyle Mitchell and was dramatically stopped by goalkeeper Keylor Navas in any case. But Hart chose to see the glass as half full.

“If you look at how the goal scored it’s not like we were not in control of the game. We had long periods where we were in control of the game and we got chances. And they were probing and trying to make something happen…

“We look [back] at some of our games and we didn’t move the ball well or we didn’t possess the ball well. And then we come into this game—I have to watch the video again—but from my naked eye I thought we were doing quite well. And we were moving the ball and getting into dangerous parts of the field.

“And when Boucaud came on it became even more effective because Khaleem was playing a little higher up and we were getting into some good positions.”

For many, the second half insertion of Campbell, who is on loan at Sporting Lisbon from English giants Arsenal, was the game’s altering act. But Hart saw Navas’ low, diving save to deny Mitchell in the 69th minute as the real defining moment.

At the time, Trinidad and Tobago were trailing to Bolanos’ item and Hart felt the game would have been totally different if Navas did not stop the net from bulging.

But this is the Hex, and last night the hosts were not too good at turning water into wine. “Los Ticos” helped themselves to some ‘Presidential wine’ however, as Ronald Matarrita’s stoppage time item sealed a deserved 2-0 win.

Hart and his charges will need a pick-me-up quickly, as they jet off to Honduras for a match which already feels like a must-win.

  1. Bulls, they were sh…… World Cup and World Cup qualifiers mean passion, running, determination and innovation. This team has exhibits none of the four. At this rate they will exit by the 4th round.

  2. Decent !! .. we did not score and goals win matches…. No. 9 is too static…. only reacts after the play…. seems unfit too..

  3. I did not have a problem with the tactics we used in the first half. It seems that the coach’s approach was to respect this team that on paper is head and shoulders above us. Play for a draw or possibly sneek a win. The second half was a different game as Costa Rica stepped up. I think I would have told Jovin Jones to ikeep running at their right back for the entire night. We don’t really have a proven goalscorer and goals win games so it is fair to say that we are in trouble but it is not unexpected.

  4. Lasana Liburd my opinion of the game is that, Hart got it wrong and didn’t change it. Kenwyne Jones had a good first half but Jomal was no where next to him to feed off the balls that were out down. Jovin and Cummings were on the wrong side. I would have started with Khaleem Shaquille Hyland-bruce as the no10 with Boacaud and George holding it wold have given depth. Jomal was hugely ineffective as the wingers were on the wrong side and unable to provide any service. So it was a tactical error on the part of the coach.

    • Correct an he put hiland an George in the middle two defensive players so it had nothing going on

    • Sometimes you have the right idea but it doesn’t work out. Jomal scored a nice goal against Uruguay as the 10 and he should be a better attacking player than Hyland. But for whatever reason, he never got going and looked a little timid when it came to showing for the ball.
So I don’t know if Hart got it wrong. Or if it is just that Jomal didn’t play as he can.

    • What did you think about my opinion on the wingers? Trust me I am pro-Hart but if we have to get it right,we must admit we may have made bad decisions. I think he is doing a fantastic job and he also utilises Kenwyne Jones well. I am of the opinion that sometimes we needed to be proactive rather than reactive, we should have taken the game to them as we were having slightly more ball possession.I don’t know what happens in the locker room and training but, I would have loved to see Plaza, Joseph or Ceaser or any two just attacking them.

  5. Decent wow. Which game he was watching? Smdh

  6. A good coach is supposed to be able to bring out the best in his players. So are we saying that the players have little potential? Young men are generally the same all over the world but the onus is on those who are leaders to guide them. Lasana, similar situation at the CIC camp. Poor management.

  7. All trinidadians good for is to criticize and jump on a bandwagon. Costa Rica is world class we are not on their level; or the level of Mexico or the U.S. when talking player personel, with that said i dont think we were aweful based on what we have to work with. People in this country are quick to criticize the coach but if u know anything about football u would know that hart is sqweezing out all he can from the players he has to work with. If we want to criticize look in the mirror and ask ourselves why we dont turn up to support our team and be a 12th man, why are there empty seats in the stadium and for those who were there why is it that our fans are a non factor. The opposition might as well be playing at their home stadium. If we want to criticize, how bout we criticize that. #typicaltrinis

  8. Hart should have started Guerra in Midfield

  9. Lionel Messi to Argentina football fans after their loss to Brazil: “I hope the people in San Juan have patience. That affects us. I watched on TV the game in Cordoba [Argentina’s home loss 1-0 to Paraguay on Oct. 11] and I could see that the players were booed and insulted. That does not help. We need to be united. We need to feel that we are the hosts.

“They have to understand that we need to do it together. We are the first to want to win and get results. When those around you are not behind you, you notice that.

“We have a few days to forget and prepare the next one. It needs to be different to that [performance] of today. We know we are going to be punished but we need to be strong to come out of this situation.

“There are many games left and we are not thinking about missing out on qualifying. Winning the rest of them we will be back in contention. We must be positive because we think we will get there but we need to change a lot.”

  11. When u have a defender that like to run up and don’t have the energy to run back, that’s what happens #sirussucks

  12. Hart bring us up to a high did his part now let’s get a new coach and move on

  13. We need to puts more youths on the team in case we don’t make the world cup we have mature players for the next Trinidad need to have a plan for youths from 12 go up its the system that’s wrong were is the under 17 team right now

  14. You can only be becent due to poor preperation.

  15. Honestly i also think we did not play that bad. Other the the first goal, there were really no clear cut chances for either side. I thought our approach look like we were playing an away game. With respect to giving the side our support just look at the number of empty seats at the stadium. Just my thoughts, hope the guys have better luck Tuesday!!!

  16. I woke up this morning my mom was like “u ain’t c d shit T&T play lastnight the boy an them play like dey afraid..they need a striker an a coach..they should a sub kenwyne Jones and bring on the tall boy earlier”……..#momknowsbest

  17. I’m being very objective here…….
We have to understand that first 3 teams qualify automatically. . 4th place in a playoff .. Costa Rica , Mexico , USA are my pics to take those spots , therefore it leaves us with fighting for that 4th place .. Costa Rica is probably the best team in concacaf at present , so losing to them home and away shouldn’t be a surprise. .. what we MUST ensure though, is that we beat Panama , Honduras , Mexico or USA at home , and look to get some points in the road , which I’m sure we can do ..
We can’t write off our coach and chances to qualify , based on first game against a best team… but on the other hand , coach hart I think needs to make some quicker changes during the game , when things aren’t going our way on the field.. K. Jones has his purpose , but if he plays 55min in a game and has nooo impact , he shud be substituted asap…. after the other 2 games ahead, if we are on zero points , then I’ll join in the chorus that the coach maybe hanging on a thin line

  18. We should have reacted to the obvious trouble Joel Campbell was giving by switching Kenwyne Jones ( who was visibly tired), for another holding midfielder. Remember we probably beat/drew with Costa Rica once in eleven matches.

  19. In the whole of T&T you telling me we don’t have a MF that could control the game, make some some nice through passes like how Latas used to do it? It looks like we only have defenders and forwards.

  20. Well if yuh call not being able to trap the ball, control the ball, run with the ball, pass the ball and shoot the ball at goal decent then we in real trouble horrible football!

  21. your aint see they ly in the night before no practice fuss they know tnt aint shit

  22. You all realise we were playing Costa Rica, a team that eliminated England and Italy at the last World Cup? I mean this wasn’t Barbados eh…

  23. When there is an indian player on the national team then we will have results

  24. This team dont worth salt stephen hart should apply elsewhere where players have heart and talent .what we have is a group of glorified schoolboys

  25. Get jem an chucky we need strikers

  26. Kenwayne either needs to be on the bench next game or home… he cannot be on the pitch!!!

  27. Their “real game” is Tues….. we will see which is the team that rules the roost in CONCACAF because US lose that they down 6…..

  28. Sana, costa rica never got out of 2nd gear….. this was like a training match for them… doh kid your self

    • They still needed three points and had to bring Joel Campbell off the bench to get it. I’ve seen T&T teams blown out home and away before. And this wasn’t one of those games.
Even though I’d say Costa Rica deserved the three points in the end.

    • But Costa Rica benched their star ….are we afraid to do so ourselves? Because we’re getting limited movement from KJ and he doesnt seem as motivated as Stern was during his scoring slump.

  29. Goals win matches…that said we need to buck up for Tuesday because against Honduras in Honduras will be a tough assignment

  30. Marcia, I remember Emmanuel Callender saying that local fans often want to give athletes five bricks and expect them to build a mansion.
You have to judge Hart based on what he can do with what he has.

    • Yes Lasana but Hart is the one who ch the current squad and he also fail to expand his player pool therefore it’s his fault for not having quality player to turn to he said he was very comfortable with his squad hence the reason he did not uterliz these games to look at new players he was more concerned with winning meaningless games

      • I don’t know that T&T has a wider player pool. But it is true that we are hampered by having such a small core. Hart did ask to be able to put a local based team in camp and have games with them. So I don’t think he was against exposing more players.

  31. F@#$%$ you Stephen Hart, yuh is ah F@#$$%%^ing disappointment and need to be replace, you have reach you peak and cannot help the team no more , as for this bunch ah loosers , that another question

  32. Kids have to understand the meaning of “sacrifice” eh Joann Charles.
To be fair though, Costa Rica are a damn good team. They are in the top 20 in the world. And they didn’t overrun us at any point.

  33. We need a coach and a stricker.before it to late

  34. Kendall, this is the land of pussyfooting so continue losing games and making excuses. Over and out.

  35. That’s a bit harsh Marcia. Given the current squad, results under Hart haven’t been that bad. I’m sure Brian Springer can quote chapter and verse in that regard.

  36. Not sure what game you all watched, but I actually thought the fellas played ok. Obviously not good enough to win the game, but I must say we matched them very well and with a little more effort and a few different options on the field, including keeping the captain off the field and playing Bocaud and Levi from the start.

    • Boucaud did very well. I’m not sure that Levi starts automatically. I don’t mind having a weapon to bring off the bench, especially if Levi isn’t prepared to track back.
For now, I think Levi can help us trouble tiring defences.

  37. Man…that just as horrible in my opinion…more upset by them than Cyrus actually.

  38. Equally responsible? Nah. I wouldn’t say that. They failed to cut out a cross. But that marking was unforgivable.

  39. Again, Cato and David equally responsible for that first goal as Cyrus.

  40. Trinidad fans are so hypocritical and such bandwagonist sometimes we only like winners and never give genuine support to our athletes. This team hardly if any of you all out there I ncluding myself gave them a realistic chance of reaching the hex. To compound it further I believe that coach Hart unfortunately has the least talented bunch of players in the last twenty years and has done magic to even be competitive with the best in Our region. It alright to be disappointed but be realistic TTFA development programs are a joke to serious countries football programs then we want to take it out on individual players e.g. Our skipper Kenwyn Jones for a teams deficiencies. The fact is Hart doing the best with what available to him ,the Stern, Latas and Yorke era is gone and oh my do you appreciate what you had when it’s gone. I’ll pay anything now for a striker in Sterns mould for this team and the fact is when he was banging in the goals then our same two tongue fans loved to fight him just like what Kenwyn now enduring although Stern treatment was worst then. I always say if Stern played for any other country he would be a cult hero but again is Trinidad and Tobago and its bandwagonist fans. A word to the wise and all the football analysts support your team to the thick and thin that is in fact the DNA of a genuine fan/ supporter.

    • Very well said Timoh. Very well said.

    • This is utterly nonsense Hart had opportunities to look at other players that were available to TT but he refused to do wbecause according he is going with the players who know his “system” therefore he passed on looking at new potential when he played friendlies and meaning games .He has to take blame this is the team he selected he also said he use a tracking system to keep him informed on what players are doing with their respective clubs if that was true then he should have known some of the players he selected were not playing quality mins with their respective clubs therefore they are not in good playing shape finally TT players have no discipline and they do not listen to good advice because they feel they are that good and nobody can tell them anything

  41. Cheyenne Hector is spot on! We needed to adapt to Campbell’s introduction a LOT faster…Levi and Boucaud made almost immediate impact upon entering the pitch… Plaza reminds me of Jason Scotland a decent striker but not up to international standard…we badly need an out and out striker but do not have one so I would suggest go with Levi as a false 9

    • While I agree Scotty was in an era where he played 2nd fiddle to Stern when he DID get his chances eg. Gold Cup 2005 he didn’t take them…and fyi you should know I wasn’t referring to that Bermuda match when we being led by a misled clueless Columbian.

    • Lol. I think the whole team was crap against Colombia though. And if I remember correctly, Scotland played left wing then. That’s harsh. There were other occasions when he performed well in his true role at centre forward.
He is not a winger. But it says something that Beenhakker trusted him enough to try him there.

    • Good lord. Jason Scotland wasn’t a good international striker?!
Don’t go there please Brian. Scotland was poor in one match against Bermuda when he wasn’t in the squad initially and was enjoying his holiday eating loads of macaroni pie.
But I can point to loads of contributions he made in red, black and white too.
He was just in an era that coincided with our greatest scorer of all time, Stern John.
Scotland would be a tremendous asset if he was 30 now.
Also there is no comparison between the games of Plaza and Scotland. Scotland was technically sound, strong and had excellent hold up play.
Plaza is more instinctive and mobile.

    • They need to put Daniel Cyrus to sit down and look at the video of the game particularly the two goals and get an explanation as to why such an experience player continues to lose concentration and ball watch.

  42. Speak to the trainer them fellas eh like to train so they must not be fit

  43. No midfield nothing
    …poor for national footballers. ..

  44. No where near decent from what I saw last night

  45. Hart always has some bloody excuse! We need a new coach and either a foreign one or a local who has had significant experience coaching abroad. A different approach is needed. But I forgot – the TTFF, like the WICB, need someone they can control. After all, that’s far more important than winning matches.

    • Wow! Excuse? You prefer he say nothing??? Like you forget BEFORE Hart T&T was losing to the likes of Bermuda and Guyana who knocked us out of Brazil 2014 at the semi-final round??? And this was Under a GERMAN Coach…Under Hart we drew twice with Mexico…and AWAY from home on both occasions…recent results gave been poor but up to that away loss to the US we were UNBEATEN in that round…and as far as someone they can control…you need to read some more articles on http://www.wired868.com or ask Lasana Liburd

    • You know little to nothing about the game. Name me a local coach capable of organizing that team?

  46. What is “decent” in foorball? Hmm!

  47. Think he got some key decisions wrong yesterday . Not starting Boucaud and packing the midfield was one . Jomal Williams was lost and offered nothing on and off the ball .

His changes were also suspect . Going to 4-5-1 when we went 1-0 down … maybe even using Kenywne from the start was a bad idea considering he is not fit . The guy made one run into a channel in 70+ mins . Plaza isn’t quite good but he made 6 or 7 in his time on the pitch

    • Agreed Cheyenne. Also good defense starts from up front with strikers atempting to close down outlet passes. We dont get much of that from up front when we lose the ball once Kenwyne is up top.. Kenwyne should start the next game on the bench for me.. Boucaud, Plaza/Caesar and Levi Garcia have to start for me..

  48. Decent?
The Soca Warriors played with the energy of a patient who’s intestinal tract has a tapeworm infestation.
