Sub Campbell makes the difference as C/Rica down tentative T&T 2-0 in front of 13,345 fans

The Trinidad and Tobago Senior National Team’s CONCACAF Hex campaign started with a home defeat tonight as the Soca Warriors failed to make home advantage count with a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

In the Nacion’s match preview, the Central America nation suggested that Trinidad and Tobago was a second home for “Los Ticos.” And although the visitors didn’t exactly traipse around in their bathroom slippers, they certainly knew where all the furniture was in tonight’s Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier.

It was a classic display of game management from the tourists. True, Warriors winger Joevin Jones was a thorn in their sides. But celebrated Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas had just one save to make over 90 minutes, after a low speculative effort from Trinidad and Tobago defender Carlyle Mitchell in the 68th minute.

Jan-Michael Williams was not especially busy in goal for the hosts either. But Costa Rica bided their time well.

After a first half with little to report save for a Kendall Waston header—which was batted away by Williams—Costa Rica waited until the second half to switch gears.

In the 57th minute, Costa Rica coach Oscar Ramirez sent on enigmatic striker Joel Campbell to replace Marcos Ureña and, within seven minutes, Los Ticos were ahead.

Campbell exchanged passes with right full back Christian Gamboa and midfielder Celso Borges before Borges slid a ball down the right flank. And Gamboa got around the back of Warriors left back Aubrey David before delivering a precise low cross at the far post, which found Christian Bolanos so criminally unmarked by opposing defender Daneil Cyrus that the MLS player was able to take a touch before tapping into an empty net.

“We tried to take advantage of [Trinidad and Tobago] being tired in the second half,” said Ramirez, whose team have scored all six of their 2018 World Cup qualifying away goals after the interval. “And Campbell was introduced to help [our] combination play.”

Warriors coach Stephen Hart’s response was to immediately replace the ineffective Jomal Williams with deep-lying ball handler, Andre Boucaud, and push the spiky Khaleem Hyland further upfield. Jomal stuck close to captain Kenwyne Jones throughout, presumably in anticipation of flick ons that he could chase.

But Kenwyne barely got any competent aerial service—and, in any case, Costa Rica’s six foot five defender Kendall Waston was certainly not intimidated by the height of the Warriors talisman—while Jomal rarely gave his midfielders a passing option on the ground.

Hyland as a ‘number 10’ was hardly the sort of change that would strike fear into the visitors.

There were cheers when Netherlands-based teenaged starlet, Levi Garcia, was finally introduced in place of the industrious Cordell Cato in the 74th minute. And the loudest cheer of the match was reserved for the final change, as Willis Plaza replaced Kenwyne upfront.

Yet, in the end, Boucaud was the only substitute to make an impact. Composed and cocky in possession, his confidence was contagious. And, for the closing 10 minutes, Trinidad and Tobago finally looked capable of passing the ball through the midfield rather than a one-dimensional attacking unit, completely reliant on Joevin’s pace and trickery.

But the game belonged to Costa Rica’s super sub.

A minute and a half into second half stoppage time, Campbell flicked the ball to Bolanos into space and the tricky attacker stepped inside Boucaud and teed up left wing back Ronald Matarrita for a close ranged finish.

Campbell, incidentally, is yet to score after seven games in this World Cup qualifying campaign. But there was no doubting his contribution.

“[The loss is] disappointing [because] I thought we were in control for very long periods,” said Hart. “The second goal I didn’t really care about because we were trying to get back into the game.”

Matarrita’s strike sparked a rush to the exits for the locals while the Costa Rica supporters went into a flag waving frenzy.

“Ole, ole, ole, ole… Ticos! Ticos!”

The Costa Rican fans were on the receiving end of some thumbs up and slaps on the back at the final whistle. And, for the most part, their players again enjoyed the hospitality of the two island republic.

Trinidad and Tobago have never defeated Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying competition while the last time the Warriors managed a draw—some 11 years ago—Patrick Manning was still prime minister.

Tonight, 13,345 spectators turned out to see the action, which was near 7,000 less than the number who watched the Warriors play Guatemala here in the earlier round—two months ago.

It is uncertain whether the price hike, the behaviour and/or suspension of playmaker Kevin Molino or the team’s dip in form was the main factor in the diminished turnout. Or perhaps it was the inhumane treatment meted out to fans as they tried to get into the ground to see the Warriors play Guatemala.

Thankfully, the fans had a more straightforward time in getting to their seats tonight while the supporters who did show up were certainly appreciative of their team’s efforts.

The Warriors leave tomorrow evening for what should be a dogfight in San Pedro Sula against Honduras. Honduras lost at 1-0 at home to Panama tonight and cannot afford a second straight defeat in their own backyard.

Hart might at least feel reassured by his team’s ability to generally keep up with their illustrious guests, who were quarterfinalists at the 2014 World Cup. Hopefully, they have something left in the tank for Tuesday’s away fixture.

  1. Well I’ll shoot from d hip d ttff Hav d coaching staff under d gun cuz dey r not producing wat dey r PAID for yea so y d hell d coaching staff can’t c dat big man on top is not producing wat he’s being PAID for and DROP him ur neck is on d line because GOALS win matches y u keep playing dis dude so ur prepared 2b fired Dan make sum drastic changes only wen 15mins to go u den say let me put on sum 1 who feel dat can give me 2 quick GOALS God damn start with d blasted players u think can give u 1 or 2 quick GOALS it’s costing us by extension it will cost u Mr Hart.

  2. Read every comment here and not one person has mentioned Joevin Jones’ poor deliveries on set pieces!

Our wingers should have switched when we realized we were being forced down the line by CR. This would have given us the chance to some earlier crosses in. On the occasions when they had the beating of the wingbacks having to come back on their strong foot broke down the play.

  3. The more I watch this team tactically, Hart should switch to a 3-5-2 formation. We do not have defenders that overwhelm but we have an abundance of midfielders to choose from. For those current center backs that lack the confidence on the ball, he can convert a midfielder to one or more of the center back positions to play a 3-5-2.

Also, if we trying to get crosses into KJ, why is Joevin playing on the right and Cato on the left, both away from dominant foot. I don’t recall one cross from Cato with his left and only one good one from Joevin with his right. Not to take away from Joevin’s play all game nor Cato in the first half. The idea is for them to cut in but we did not see much of this either.

    • Yes, I agree that we should switch those wingers from time to time during the match. I think we usually do that so it is odd that it didn’t happen last night. Unless, the coach wanted Cato to stay close to Costa Rica’s right wing back. And it was him, Gamboa, who created the opener.
A 3-5-2 system needs time to teach properly. But interesting idea. It won’t suit Levi at all. But Joevin, Aubrey, Cyrus and Cato would all do quite well as wing backs. So that’s a good shout.
But I can’t see that happening outside of a situation where the team is in camp for two weeks with a practice game or two to try it out.

      • Certainly will need a long camp to teach, agree with your thinking that Cato likely had defensive duties. Are you suggesting Aubrey and Cyrus could be two of the 3 center backs?

I actually like Levi, playing alongside KJ in the 3-5-2 not as a wing back.

        • I meant Aubrey, Cyrus, Joevin and Cato as potential wing backs and not central defenders. We’d have Mitchell, Bateau, Abu Bakr, Mekeil and Yohance at the back. It is an interesting idea.

          • I had Aubrey as one of my center backs. Cyrus and Aubrey are big frames to run that wing for 90. I like to build from the back, so if the idea have any legs we would need 3 defenders with the requisite skills. Since I am not sure if we have that’s why I wanted to convert one of our midfielders since we have such an abundance.

Plus KJ, needs some one to play with either alongside or slightly withdrawn.

Whether this or another formation, I think Hart has to change something.

Our formations must follow our strengths. Caribbean football always full of “link” men..lol

  4. OK we establish that kenwyn is not doing what is necessary to win games but I find we as Trinidadians like to bash leave it fr the coach to see seats in the stadium was empty where was the support come on move on from the negative and do y’all part the man ain’t going nowhere #Relax #TT

  5. Team looks more able to breakdown defenses when Kenwyne is out. If Kenwyne plays, wevneed better service, but he needs to work harder too. Without Boucaud, team lacks creativity in midfield. Need another creative threat in my opinion. Coach has to be willing to try putting Levi on right wing and Joeven on left as teams would have done homework in a sense. Lastly, mistakes happen. We have to be ready to fight back or change tactics, if we fall behind. Cannot wait until 75th minute to make majority of subs regardless of game situation. I hope we can rebound quickly with a slightly more aggressive game plan against Honduras, as i think they are a team we need to beat twice.

  6. Disappointed? Huh… all yuh really expected T&T to win. Ah should ah bet everyone ah all yuh $600 tt, yes. Would have been the easiest set ah money this week!

  7. Heart subs made the difference for us why these people not starting and yuh so called captain not on the bench. ..

  8. WOW. Only 13,345 fans??? Would be good to hear reasons. A.Ticket prices, B.Chirstmas, C. Low team expectation/play, D.Serious safety concerns from former matches [my reason]

  9. Yes he did…. Why were there always 2 guys around him? You guys seeing what you want to see.

  10. Well he ceratinly didn’t command any respect tonight eh steeuupps

  11. It depends on how you play. Is Higuain mobile? No… But if given great service he will kill you. Not that I’m saying KJ is in his class. However please note whenever KJ is on the field he commands respect. Ain’t nobody respecting Plaza.

  12. We had d 6ft 5 in CR winnin all d balls in d air from an unfit KJ…different tactic shud have been used. Was surprised dat Cato an Jones didnt switch wings durin d first half

  13. I agree that Cato didnt contribute any quality crosses an Cyrus is at fault for slack defendin but isnt mobility one of d things a striker must have in his armory??

  14. Jomal was really static. Surprisingly so. It’s true that Kenwyne didn’t get around much tonight. But there is no way he could have been match fit, as he has just returned from injury.

  15. We are looking for something that KJ isn’t. He has no one to give him quality service. Look at Cyrus crosses? Cato? Shit…yes he has to work more tho

    • I don’t think people summarizing the whole picture of things.
CR defended with 5 across the back and cancelled any possibility of a productive overlap or cross.
Cato right footed and playing on the left…how is KJ to get aerial service ?

    • People looking for a scapegoat and KJ is it. Teams game plan for KJ. We don’t appreciate what we have. Yes, he has to get better and fitter but he gets little to no service. As a #9 you need service to be successful. He is not the type of player to create is own opportunities

    • Kjbis brainless….slow, poor first touch, not a good passer….always quarreling wit his team and referee….and d list goes on

  16. An becuz of dat we were able to try an go thru d centre instead of over d top or counter act down d flanks

  17. Plaza is more mobile. Kenwyne is better in the air. We have to play to the strengths of whoever is on the field.

  18. Because the fella is a real shit hound eh steeuupps

  19. There was alot more movement off the ball…Not sure if being 1-0 down had anything to do wit that

  20. Kindly permit me to put in my two cents…Did d team looked more mobile when Plaza cane home…although Plaza was runnin wide to collect passes. Most of the time KJ was jus static an the team didnt look as mobile.

  21. I forgot the drama to get in the game against Guatemala might have also affected turnout. I will add that.

  22. Lasana Liburd ?? gosh that major sub needed to come way before 12 minutes left ?
On a positive note however the process to enter and exit was MUCH BETTER this time around.
Final rant why was there caution tape around the seats center field/ tunnel ? seriously did they pay more than I did to enter? Why the need for that. First time ever I didn’t sit in my usual half line position ?

  23. I don’t think we were ever really in the game.

Joevin in my opinion was not effective, nor was Cato. All CR did most times was block JJ from drifting inside which was the main threat. They didnthave to worry about Cato cutting in.

I think the sequence of the subs were poor, didn’t agree with the reshuffle to put Boucad on. Thought Levi should’ve replaced Cato, and then Lobo/Plaza for Jomal.

  24. Everybody blames KJ which makes no sense to me. He is on an island with little to no help. With proper service he can do the job. I’m not a KJ fan by any means but come on man. Cato does absolutely nothing game after game yet people chastise KJ.

    • Holdup what? With what service? He has to be mobile and work harder, I agree. But don’t place all the blame at his feet. I totally disagree with that

    • Brent… this is d HEX…
KJ is picked by Hart for his presence…and bcuz he is d Captain…but look at allllll the other football dynamics based on d individual we r speaking about…..
He is d largest player on d field…so he will giv any opposing Coach d impression that he can b a handfull…that never happens….
Putting aside the fact that KJ never scores( his ratio of goals to games started is in d minus)
When we r building out of the back…he doesnt hav d workrate to show for d ball consistently…
He doesnt hav d touch and sharpness of legs to protect d ball when he gets it…So we cant start d play with him..
And we cant finish d play with him…..
But thats not d astonishing thing…the tallest and largest man on d field (KJ) is absolutely no threat from set pieces…tell me when hav u ever seen KJ jump over a defender who is shorter than him and score a header….
When u reach the point where at International level…your performance has more negatives than positives…then that level has already left u behind

    • Your points are valid Dexter. Please know that I am not discounting them. But the notion that everybody points to KJ as a scapegoat is ridiculous.

    • Brent…get serious please…he is not jus another player…he is d leading striker…and he is d CAPTAIN….this is d final competitive phase to play in the WORLD CUP…this is d frickin HEXXXXXXXXXXXX

    • So because he is the captain he is too blame? Typical Trini’s bro. Win as a team, lose as a team….

    • But he is the scapegoat because we have other prolific goalscorers on the team given the same amount of time on the field will always do a better job than him and I will always ask this question have to ever seen anyone wear the Captain armband eh and they are a shithound eh come on nah man Brent Bennett. You really good yes

    • Plaza is a starter he isn’t no come off the bench to expect miracles from him and also Marcus Joseph to eh

    • I have no issue with replacing KJ. However the notion that KJ is what’s wrong with the team is a fallacy….

    • Gosh Brent….bcuz he is d Captain…we xpect more from him…thats alll…i never look fuh scapegoats

    • I hear you bro. Yuh pleading for leadership and heart… I hear you…

    • Well let my Coach Hart bounce his head and leave him on the bench for the next game against Honduras nah and give the other goalscorers their chances and also give the armband to the goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams permanently and I am positively certain that our team will begin to win more games especially when Molino gets his act together and eventually returns to the team

    • This is not about plugging a hole…we hav to build the attack around someone else that is more mobile and technically skilled….

    • Who is that Dexter? You would know better than me but I’ve seen no one on this team capable. And don’t tell me Molino because he does nothing against good competition.

    • Cato tracked back tonight I thought though. He did decent work there. Kenwyne hasn’t played a full game in a month. I thought he lasted long under the circumstances and wasn’t bad.
The cheer when his number came up was deafening. He must have skin like a rhino yes.

    • Cato loses possession 75% of the time. Next time you watch him please observe. He did work hard defensively and that’s why he plays ahead to Levi. But he doesn’t help us offensively at all IMO. I think he is a very dunce player. I’ve been saying this for years

    • Brent u serious….when we play Caribbean teams of lesser quality KJ misses most and sometimes allllll our goalmouth chances….b4 we continue…hav u ever seen KJ train

    • Steeuupps I really don’t know what game alyuh watching nah but enough excuses about Mr. Bound not to score eh the fella haven’t a clue about the game eh and all he does is argue with his players and he Coaches on the field of play eh, he really needs to resign from representing our sweet country eh.

    • One thing though Dexter. Joel Campbell ent score a goal yet in this campaign. Not one!
Sometimes you can help without scoring.

    • Most of the purpose of a lone striker is to hold up play. Yes scoring goals is another aspect but primarily its to hold up play to set up your midfielders. If you guys don’t understand that, oh well. What Trini’s looking for from KJ, they will.never get. He is not that type of player. We always want something we don’t have.

    • Yeah but he isn’t even doing what you are saying about holding up the play man, yuh need to remove the cobwebs from your eyes eh

    • Lol. He didn’t stand out today Mango. I won’t argue that. But then he isn’t fully fit. The problem is there no other striker that really pressing him for his place.

    • Personally i would try Levi at centre…
Joevin…Cato…Levi..is a new dynamic that opposing teams will find difficult and Levi was given more respect than KJ in dat game by d opposing defenders…he is good technically…he is good 1v1…he is strong…he is mobile…and a good eye fuh goal…it wud also mean that we wud hav a high tempo attack that will wear defenders down fuh substitutes…defenders r jus as fresh after 75mins of dealing wit KJ…the level of creativity going 4ward jus went through the roof wit Levi playing on frame

    • Dexter Cyrus re: “have you ever seen Kenwyne train?”

    • Sean i see KJ train….is d worsssssssssssse training ethics i hav ever seen….absolutely no intensity….no emotion….and he always fixing his hair…and walking slower than mih grandmother wen she going in d clinic….if u see KJ train…u will understand y he performs that way in games

    • “Fixin hair….and slower than mig Grandmother” lol lol???

    • Kenwyne has a conversion rate of 90 games for tnt and 22 goals….take note Brent Bennett and others….coach hart has too much confidence in him….and Lasana Liburd in an earlier comment say he was not bad….lol….u crazy lasana ???

    • I don’t disagree Trini Don but that stat is worthless. Outside of Stern John who has a prolific scoring rate for T&T? As great a player Dwight was for us, how many times did he score? I’ll await your research….

    • And Alyuh didn’t see the Assistant Coach Had them warming up with shooting drills to the goalkeepers eh, and Mr Bound not to score, scored all of his goals eh and didn’t even take one shot to the opponent’s goal farless to score any goals. it’s seems that he is a practice champion or what eh steeuuppss and which national team ever does those type of drills in their warm up session just before a game eh. I guess only in our sweet country eh Them really good yes

    • Like I was drunk in d stadium?? Cuz I cuda swear I see Cato run shuttles up and down da flank and feed at least 3 balls to nobody… what the point of having a “Point” man if everytime you look for him in “Point” he now reach La Brea ?

    • I guess Brent Bennett missed that part eh, and it wasn’t just one time eh Shawn Charles. Brent Bennett really good yes.

    • Joevin Jones run da left winger and left back till dey tongue out dey mout!! Then… diagonal ball… to no one… there was a point in time where Joevin would reach 10m from the byline and cut back and play it off to Hyland… cuz “Point man” stuck in traffic

    • The shit KJ get away with in d semis….he cant fo that in the hex…..

    • Kj is a defender guys….lets agree on that….btw….insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get different results….( starting kj)

    • Honestly this TT captain case reminds me if the Darren Sammy WI case… but at least Sammy was the adhesive that held WI together… Jones’ attitude is that of a lazy bully… arms always flailing and always admonishing another player… steupssss

    • Let my Coach Hart and his non paid Assistants don’t select the right team moving forward, they all will finally get their throats bus eh, because my dictator President is a winner and he hates to loose eh. Them really good yes.

    • You is so right Shawn and the thing is he continues to play shit and always blaming the other players eh and this just shows you that the fella doesn’t know the subject et all and which player at this level do we see doing that madness eh be it playing real professional ball for their club team or their national team, he shouldn’t even be wearing no Captain armband eh because he isn’t a leader steeuuppss. Them really good yes.

  25. Well ….. we’re not in kansas anymore …..

  26. It was terrible the way how our team played, them go make Hart resign,I can’t believe in this day and age them men defending like that,Cyrus what the f#@k wrong with yuh, I don’t think this team go qualify after watching this match,it was one of the worst performance I have ever seen

  27. We are last on goal difference starting off so yes, we had a big night

  28. When my both flankers Cato and Jovin Jones speeding down the flanks eh, and looking for Mr. Bound not to score who was no where to be found because he was always in the middle of the field moving like a snail as usual instead of being in the attack and why didn’t our midfield/ play maker Boucard start the game eh. and just imagine he was suppose to the the defensive midfielder eh, and he was doing all the playmaking and passing instead of Hyland eh. he had a very good second half eh. on of course Plaza came onto the field to late to eh.Them really good yes

  29. Kenwyne will make coach hart loose his job…..and ppl like Brian Springer swear by KJ

  30. Hart was happy with us playing the ball around at the back and very little movement from the midfield and a forward who moves when he feels like it. The first half was nothing to talk about Costa Rica had the best chances to score and as the pace increased in the second half we started to look worst and at the end the ball movement in the middle only happened because Costa Rica dropped off.

  31. And d coach started with kenwyne again !!!! F#$kin Steups

  32. My Coach Hart and Mr. Bound not to score really needs to be fired because Coach Hart isn’t picking the right team and of course Mr. Bound not to score continues to behave like if he is the Coach on the field Steeupps Them really good yes.

  33. When I listened to Russell Latapy say at the end of the game that he was satisfied with the team’s performance I understood finally why he’s not coaching in Europe. Anybody who was satisfied with that performance does not have a clue about football. That was about as bad as it can get. We looked clueless. We played at snail’s pace even though speed was supposed to be an asset and it looked like we came to this game settling for one point. If they thought the crowd size was small, wait until the next game. Who wants to pay all that money to watch such a boring, uninspiring and unimaginative brand of football.

  34. Old man score a goal for Mexico, yes

  35. Why not play Abu Bakr instead of Cyrus,he Cyrus making to many mistakes

  36. 50 Costa Rica fans made more noise than the ‘home’ crowd..we sad yes…when things nice again everyone is T&T’s #1 fan!

  37. We NEED better passing and possession. The passes are not flowing and smooth. The runs and movement off the ball MUST be taken up by couple steps in this round. Midfielders have to join the attack much faster and Kenwyn Jones could star off the bench, time for a new skipper as we start to faze him out.
We can’t be playing to win with not much intensity in the attack and from the older Jones. He must know that he losing some “zing”.

  38. Yeh but dais d least of our worries

  39. Btw, the TTFA give us a six for a nine with Mavado? I certainly didn’t see any sign of him.

    • People were upset that he was selected. It came across d 7o clock news that persons were going to turn their back on him.

We try so hard to break the Gaza v Gully nonsense here.

So a promoter want to bring him that is their right but do not subject me to that nonsense.

  40. Im watchin over d game as we speak an Im only seein the 6ft 5in CR

  41. If is anything our central midfielders maybe too side to side…if u say that I can tend to agree but durin Harts tenure this is d most conposed I have ever seen this team played

  42. I doh agree wit dat statement Brent..he got service on his foot but his first tiuch is poor an always playin for a foul.

  43. He does have to work harder. I agree. But the notion that we have someone much better is naive.

  44. We have people that cannot provide service. Two central midfielders that cannot make an accurate pass past 10 yards. What do you expect?

  45. Im not knockin KJ but while he commands d respect on d field he also puts more pressure on d midfield when he misfires an by far he is too static. He showed one or two glimpses of some sort of urgency but definitely needs to do more
