Kaden Fournillier notched a hat-trick to inspire FC Tigers to a 5-1 win over Evolution FC on Saturday and take over the top spot in the Central Zone U14 Division of the 2025 Republic Bank National Youth Football League at the Ancil Elcock Recreation Ground in Frederick Settlement, Caroni on Saturday.
Fournillier’s second-half treble took the Tunapuna Tigers above previous leaders Premier SC, who eased past Maloney Real Footballers Academy 7-0 in a replayed fixture.

Fournillier scored a hattrick in his team’s 5-1 win.

Premier were initially granted a win by default over the Maloney outfit on Saturday 22 February, only for tournament organisers, TT Gameplan, to have a change of heart—as Maloney were afforded the chance to battle Maloney for the three points.
But Maloney could not live with a Premier team that scored 11 times in their last outing against Cooper’s Coaching Academy and clearly had not lost their appetite.
The third fixture at the Ancil Elcock Ground was notable only for controversy. Waterloo Tigers were awarded the points from their contest with Crown Trace FC, after the Nicholas Griffith-coached team left the field in the wake of red cards for defender Adam Raymond and Griffith.
The game was less than 15 minutes old at the time.

The final game between Cooper’s Coaching Academy and T&T Maestros Football Institute never got started with the latter team failing to show.
But there was plenty to please neutral supporters in the two morning match-ups, on a scorching Saturday morning in Caroni.
FC Tigers travelled to central Trinidad shorthanded, as coach Alejandro Acosta said a bout of flu forced some changes to his line-up. But they did not lack fight.
“[It] was [important] not to give [Evolution] an opportunity and space to play, [and] to attack the ball as fast as possible,” said Acosta.

The Chaguanas-based Evolution FC, 2024 RBNYFL Under-20 champions, settled faster and Luke Bellamy could have put his team ahead in the sixth minute.
Tigers goalkeeper Zakiree Khan, who defied the flu to help his team, came up with a save. And, just four minutes later, Jayden Reece made Evolution pay for the wasted chance as the left-sided attacker raced clear of the opposing defence to thrash a cross-shot into the net.
Reece, who also competes as a sprinter in track and field, quickly emerged as the quality player on the field.

The pace, masterful first touch, and tenacity in attack of the 13-year-old Tunapuna Secondary student, coupled with his willingness to press high up the field, caused disarray in the Evolution defence.
Reece was also involved in the Tigers’ second goal, which Kesean Jeffrey smashed home in the 32nd minute.
“At the beginning of the game, through nerves and inexperience, we had a little difficulty in getting composed to play,” said Acosta, whose team is made up entirely of Tunapuna Secondary students.
“Once we settled down, we started to do what we planned to do.”

Acosta is also coach of Tunapuna Secondary and Tigers comprise totally of Tunapuna Secondary players.

A big part of the Tigers’ plan, Acosta confirmed, was to smother the Evolution attackers. And Evolution coach Brendon Burke confessed that Evolution struggled under pressure.
“I have to give it to Tigers FC—they pressed us well,” said Burke. “On my end, defensively, I need to work a bit more with the center-backs and the communication with the defensive midfielder.”
Both teams spurned chances in the early stages of the second half before a breathless three-minute period produced three sizzling goals.

In the 52nd minute, Fournillier took a pass inside the ‘D’ of the Evolution penalty box and glided past a defender before slamming it into the net for a 3-0 lead.
However, substitute Matthew Mungal immediately trimmed the three-goal cushion as he went on a bullishly brilliant run past two defenders before slotting home from close range.
Undeterred, the Tigers hit right back right as Fournillier ran onto another delicious ball to slot home his second goal. And the central midfielder completed his hattrick with a powerful free kick that slid under the dive of Evolution goalkeeper Kayden Chapman.

“I just wanted the team to stay compact and when we win the ball to support in attack,” said Burke, on his own tactical approach to the game. “I think going down 2-0 in the first half, the guys were disappointed—emotionally they were not there.”
Reece, who only started playing football two years ago with Sangre Grande-based team, FC Duranta, was a key part of the Evolution team’s half-time talk. But Burke’s boys could not resist the talented winger.
“I told the guys to mark him (Reece) but when somebody is skillful, you have to give them kudos for that,” said the former Edinburgh 500 and Union Hall FC coach.

Acosta, who is tuning his Tunapuna Secondary team for the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) East Zone competition in September, was delighted at his players’ fourth straight win in central Trinidad.
“To come into a competition and know they are playing more experienced teams—teams with a lot more players [who] can come off the field and rest,” said Acosta, “I think they are doing well.”
Burke assured his own team’s supporters that he would right the ship on the training pitch.

“I need to go back to the drawing board with some of the decision-making in the final third,” he said. “It’s a process but we are in it for the long haul.”
Earlier, Premier SC and the Maloney Real Footballers Academy finally came face-to-face, after an initial false start on 22 February—due to an apparent mix-up club and organisers.
Unfortunately, Maloney were not up to full strength with key attacker Tyreeq Kerr absent due to SEA mock exams, along with three of his teammates.
“Maloney RF do not interfere with players who have lessons, as not everybody will make it in football,” said coach Akil John.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
John urged his players at kick off: “Just fight for each other. We are short-handed today, so just fight for each other.”
But Premier SC were too tough. In the opening 35 minutes, they rained more than 15 shots on the opposing goal.
Two powerful drives from midfielder Khilon Charles—the first, from the penalty spot—flew past opposing goalkeeper Jovanie Chase to give Premier a decent lead at the interval.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
And the response from Premier coach Sharaz Ali? Push-ups!
“You have 15 or 20 shots and scoring two in the first half is not good enough,” said Ali, after the contest. “It called for some exercising of the muscles.”
With muscles duly exercised, Premier exploded into life in the second half with substitute Zaiden Rennie now pulling the strings in central midfield.
Barely tall enough to look Lionel Messi in the eye, Rennie’s incisive passing and intelligent positioning were key in inspiring his team to five goals within the space of 22 minutes.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
First, after a Rennie-led attack broke down, substitute Zorif Ghany belted in the loose ball into the net from outside the area in the 37th minute.
Rennie combined delightfully with Soren Shade and Khirel Charles for his first four minutes later. He then returned the favor, playing in Khirell for Premier’s fifth goal six minutes later.
More sublime interplay just outside of the Maloney box led to Rennie side-footing in his second, before he completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute from a direct free-kick.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
Rennie summoned up “big-man” kinetic energy, as a member of the crowd put it, with a scorching daisy-cutter from 25 meters to round off a 7-0 win.
“In Under-14 football, when they get goals early, they down their heads,” said John, a former Arima Senior Comprehensive player. “Two goals could easily turn into four and five. If it is a nil-nil game, they would be working harder.
“No matter what, [I ask my players to] fight until the end. I don’t want any quitting. On the whole, it is life I am trying to teach them. You can’t run into one problem and just give up. That is not how life works.”

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
John finished the contest without an assistant coach, who received a red card from referee Rondell Millington for excessive protests. Both Maloney coaches apologised to the officials after the match.
John was gracious to Premier although he still believes Maloney can make it to the knockout stage of the Under-14 Division.
“I expected a tough game but I didn’t expect to lose by that much; I have to give congratulations to Premier,” he said. “I still feel we going onto the next round. We take it one game at a time.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
“If I get my full squad, it will be good for me. I believe in my chances.”
Ali, who said he is mentored by Trincity Nationals coach Joel Warrick, revealed that his Premier players are urged to pay a lot of attention to carefully managing their negative transitions.
“The transition from attack to defence is something I talk about in every team talk,” Ali said. “That was basically the coaching instructions: view the moments of the game and be smart in the moments of the game.”

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
It was not the only motivation his players received, of course.
“I guess the push-ups worked,” he said. “I had a conversation with them about being clinical in front of goal in the starting piece of the game. Zaiden Rennie did just that to get a hat-trick, so it was a player listening to the coach.”
Premier are chasing Tigers for zonal honours and Ali said they will not become complacent.
“I am happy where we are but again, we cannot let our foot off the gas,” he said. “It is a competition and we still have a lot of games to play.”

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
It is uncertain whether Crown Trace will remain to see it through. With barely 11 minutes played on Saturday afternoon, their defender Adam Raymond was adjudged to have brought down Waterloo Tigers striker Jamel Dhanraj. And Millington showed the young man a straight red card.
Griffith, the Crown Trace coach, contested the decision and was also ejected.
The official match report stated that Griffith “called his team off the field thus abandoning the game”. And Millington, who handed out three red cards on the day, awarded the game to Waterloo Tigers.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
Griffith subsequently submitted a letter to the tournament organisers with his review of the incident and his intention to withdraw from the RBNYFL. He told Wired868 that he is awaiting feedback from the organisers.
At the moment, halfway into the competition, the Central Zone Under-14 Division looks like a two-horse race with FC Tigers three points clear of second placed Premier SC and eight points ahead of third placed T&T Maestros—albeit having played a game more than both teams.
