It was a tale of two halves and no goals for Trinidad and Tobago football fans today as the T&T White Angels (the Women’s National Under-20 Team) were held goalless by the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Women’s National Under-20 outfit on Match Day Two of the Jewels of the Caribbean Tournament.
In second half stoppage time, referee Akil Weekes gave the junior Women Soca Warriors a chance to secure all three points from the penalty spot at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

Vincentian defender Kelisha Bowens fended away an effort by White Angels midfielder Siani Urbano with her raised forearm, inside the visitors’ 18-yard box.
But substitute Gabby Ramdeen could not beat “Vincey Heat” goalkeeper G-Reisa Joseph from the penalty spot, as the two teams settled for a draw.
Earlier, the Jamaica Women’s National Under-20 Team trounced their Dominican counterparts 7-0 to go top of the standings with four points from their two outings.
Remarkably, it is the T&T Red Angels (the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s National Under-17 Team) who are second with three points from their lone outing so far.

And White Angels coach Dernelle Mascall cannot afford to take tomorrow’s clash against the younger contingent lightly. If the Red Angels win, the National Under-20 ladies will almost certainly fail to advance to the Jewels of the Caribbean final on Friday.
Today, the difference between the two Trinidad and Tobago youth teams was unmistakable.
Whereas the Red Angels, led by coach Ayana Russell, sought to build the ball from the back into the midfield before releasing their wingers, Mascall’s football was more direct—and far less successful.
It is worth noting that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are certainly a tougher opponent than the Dominican outfit that the Red Angels put five goals past on Sunday.

But should the Trinidad and Tobago teams not share a similar structure and philosophy?
There was little of note to report on in the first half—and nothing to separate the two teams either.
At the interval, Mascall turned to her substitutes and the impact was immediate, with Ramdeen, a United States-based midfielder, transforming the tempo and organisation of the local side.

Was Ramdeen following Mascall’s tactical instructions more closely than the player she replaced? Or does Trinidad and Tobago’s play owe more to the tactical acumen of the player personnel on the field than the quality of the guidance from the sidelines?
Since Ramdeen only came to Trinidad this weekend, we could probably rule out the former suggestion.
Ramdeen forced Joseph into a flying save in the 59th minute, after a feed from flanker Mariah Williams.

Williams was a constant menace via her inswinging corner kicks too, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were on the ropes.
Somehow, as they did on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with Jamaica, Vincey Heat managed to hold off the White Angels.
Then, in stoppage time, came a potentially decisive moment.

Joseph did not get sufficient height or distance on her goal kick, and Urbano controlled before letting fly from on top of the opposing penalty box. Instinctively, Bowens raised her forearm to her face and the referee had no choice but to point to the spot.
Ramdeen looked confident behind the ball. But Joseph already had one penalty save in the competition—as she denied Jamaica’s Destiny Powell from the spot on Sunday.
And the burly goalkeeper stretched her frame low to her left to pull off an impressive stop.

St Vincent and the Grenadines goalkeeper G-Riesa Joseph makes an impressive save to keep out a late penalty from T&T White Angels midfielder Gabby Ramdeen during their Jewels of the Caribbean clash at the Ato Boldon Stadium on 16 December 2024.

The T&T White Angels did not have an answer. They’d better find one against the younger compatriots at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar when they meet from 4pm tomorrow.
