Gateway: Shem Alexander takes ‘voluntary leave of absence’; maintains innocence from smuggling charges

Gateway Athletics issued a statement early this morning, in the first formal acknowledgment of the arrest of its managing director Shem Alexander.

Alexander, 35, is wanted in the United States for alleged “firearm trafficking and smuggling offenses”. At present, he is under arrest in Jamaica where he waived his rights to a hearing and accepted extradition.

Jamaican Senior Superintendent of Police Stephanie Lindsay confirmed to Wired868 that Alexander has been under the custody of the Jamaica Constabulary Force since 15 November 2024.

Alexander is also sports and mentorship coordinator at MIC-IT, patron at TTPFL Tier One team Central FC, head coach at TTPFL Tier Two team MIC Matura ReUnited, director and co-founder of the International Institute of Sports and Management Studies (IISMS), and head coach of the Hillview College under-14 team.

Gateway Athletics, an organisation that promises to secure athletic scholarships for its players, said its managing director maintains his innocence—via a release from the Gateway Athletics Public Relations Team:

Mr Alexander has taken a voluntary leave of absence as the managing director at Gateway Athletics, in order to focus on treating the allegations before him.

Mr Alexander has maintained his innocence in all of the allegations levelled against him and is eager to fully ventilate the issue in the right forum, when the time is appropriate.

The same natural justice that applies to all also applies to Mr Alexander—that is, the presumption of innocence until otherwise proven.

There is no further information we can give at this time, but we will update as necessary as information becomes available.
