Intercol 24: Holy Cross, Siparia West, Mucurapo East & West among prelim winners

Holy Cross College goalkeeper Donnell Thomas was among the goal scorers today as the 2024 Coca Cola National Intercol competition kicked off around the island, with 12 teams taking part in the Preliminary round.

Thomas scored directly off a punt from inside his own penalty box as Holy Cross ran up a four-goal lead by the interval against fellow Championship Division outfit St George’s College, before easing their way to a 5-1 win at the El Dorado West Secondary ground.

Valencia Secondary mirrored Holy Cross’ win margin in their opening outing, as they routed El Dorado West 5-1 at the St Augustine Secondary school ground.

Holy Cross face defending East Zone Intercol champs Arima North Secondary next from 3.30pm on Thursday in the Quarterfinal round at the Arima Velodrome, while Valencia, another Championship team, tackle Premier Division heavies San Juan North Secondary at the same venue from 3.30pm on Friday.

In the North Zone, East Mucurapo Secondary whipped second-tier outfit Blanchisseuse Secondary 5-0 in their Preliminary matchup. And, in meetings between Championship Division schools, Mucurapo West Secondary and Trinity College (Moka) managed 6-0 and 3-0 wins over Diego Martin Central and Tranquillity Secondary respectively.

Trinity, the North Zone Championship winners who are seeking promotion via the SSFL Big Five, will have a stern test of their pedigree on Thursday when they face defending North Zone Intercol champions St Anthony’s College from 3.30pm at Queen’s Royal College grounds in St Clair.
