SSFL 24: Trinity East still alive in Intercol and Premier Division—but only just

Trinity College East (TCE) savoured two narrow victories in one evening as they made progress across separate Secondary Schools Football League competitions today.

Only one of those wins came from a match that they actually played in.

On the brink of relegation from the SSFL Premier Division, the “Blue Hawks” were handed a lifeline by Signal Hill Secondary as they defeated Speyside High 2-1 today in Speyside.

Right back Isaiah Mundy scored first for the “Country Boys” but Signal Hill came roaring back, thanks to items from Malik Wilson and Jediael Marcelle.

A win from Speyside at home would have relegated Trinity East and ensured Premier Division football for the east Tobago team in 2025. Instead, Speyside must get three points on the road against East Mucurapo Secondary, in a still unscheduled make-up match, to stay up.

At the Arima Velodrome tonight, the Blue Hawks stayed alive in the East Zone Intercol competition too—but it was nail-biting stuff, as they needed penalties to squeeze past second tier outfit, Hillview College.

Trinity East got a goal within the opening five minutes from midfielder Xavier Maricheau but Hillview, who are vying for promotion to the Premier Division at present via the SSFL Big Five, came back strong and fully deserved their late second half equaliser from attacker Tafari Kerr.

Hillview could not conjure up a winner though and Trinity East goalkeeper Jadon Pollard kept out one penalty to help his team progress 5-4 in the subsequent shootout.

Trinity East will meet Arima North Secondary, who downed Holy Cross College 3-0, next Wednesday in the East Intercol semifinal round.
