Noble: Is Griffith positioning himself as T&T’s J Edgar Hoover? Or Donald Trump?

A lawless, indisciplined and corrupt nation cannot fight crime.” Pastor Clive Dottin, The People’s Roundtable, January 2024.

At The People’s Roundtable, Pastor Dottin discussed the distinction between a street military revolt and a spiritual revival.

Pastor Clive Dottin.

He saw the nation as having a decision: either we allow the streets to be the scene of open warfare or open ourselves to a spiritual revival. In noting that gang warfare had begun to infiltrate the nation’s schools, he called for us to address our social issues urgently. He described extra-judicial killings as not a good solution.

Did he know then what shenanigans a fellow pastor was getting up to?

Pastor Ian Ezekiel Brown has very different thoughts from Pastor Dottin. He openly declared he was a spy working for the Strategic Services Agency (SSA).

Elder Lightfoot Solomon Michaux is the forerunner of Pastor Ian Brown. Elder Michaux was the “Bureau Clergyman”, which J Edgar Hoover nurtured as a foil to oppose Martin Luther King Jr (Martin, 2018).

Televangelist Elder Michaux was used by the FBI in an attempt to discredit iconic civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) chose Michaux, a Black American radio and television evangelist, to neutralise and publicly discredit King. Hoover worked closely with Michaux to shape public opinion and cast doubt upon King’s religious commitment and lifestyle.

He was the man Hoover called upon to undermine “the most dangerous Negro”—the label bestowed on King by the FBI leader. Michaux opposed other ministers and faith communities in the battle waged by the FBI. He laundered the FBI information and sought to legitimise and sanctify the FBI’s efforts.

Is this the movie script that we learnt was interrupted last week?

A red flag was raised in the radio interview on 23 September 2023 when Gary Griffith, a guest, spoke about the USA and the events of 1947. As a media-savvy person, he dropped the hint but did not elaborate.

1947 was a remarkable year in that J Edgar Hoover appeared before a committee of Congress—the House Un-American Activities Committee—to snatch the power that built the FBI. He scared the living daylights out of the American people with the fear of Communism.

Like Donald Trump, Hoover was not an evangelical but convinced that political base “to anoint him as their political champion”. (Martin, 2023) This latter point is significant in that, according to Pastor Brown, he belongs to the Association of Independent Ministers (AIM)—which overlaps with TTResponse, a forceful anti-vaccination body during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Another look at the Republicans’ admiration for Donald Trump.

A leading player in that group reprimanded Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley over the vaccination programme. The language and posture were straight from the book of Daniel.

Is it that Mr Griffith is wooing the independent Evangelical churches? Is he positioning himself as the local J Edgar Hoover?

It is fascinating to note that the broadcast, done via Zoom, was put online by the party he leads, the National Transformation Alliance, and not by the radio station.

Most shocking was the fanboy posture of the Pastor to Gary Griffith. It strains credulity to believe the response by Pastor Brown about his communications with Griffith, post his tenure as police commissioner. He claimed that there was little or none. But we ought to give credit to both gentlemen.

Pastor Brown seemingly subscribes to the “Seven Mountains philosophy” espoused by the Conservative Right of the USA.

His words suggest that Christians need to take pre-eminence in society and use arms, if necessary. This is not a far cry from what other ‘prophets’ in the USA prophesied on behalf of Donald Trump.

Pastor Brown misspoke when he claimed that Kathy Samaroo, a one-time, now-deceased pastor, was related to Griffith.

Had Brown listened well to the account given by Griffith about a prophecy he received, Brown may have learnt which pastor is Griffith’s relative. But Griffith’s stooge was too busy swooning. The prophecy, as described by Griffith, aligns with Brown’s belief that Griffith is destined for higher political office.

Did the prophecy referenced by Mr Griffth precede his announcement of his March 2022 interest in becoming the prime minister? Who knows?

Despite the struggle by the radio host to understand the connection between the Gospel and political actions, the enthusiastic Pastor convinced both the host and Griffith that more air time was needed. The station permitted the continuation the following Saturday. That session was an absolute political platform for Mr Griffith.

The Pastor and his other church members have entangled Jesus’ name with a political agenda. That agenda, influenced by the Seven Mountains philosophy, is not a mere battle for political power. It seeds the behaviour that has shaken the USA and is playing out in several courtrooms.

It is not of Christ. Famously, Jesus rebuked Peter for cutting off the ear of one of the High Priest’s servants (John 18: 10 – 11). He told Peter that action was not aligned with God’s Will.

Jesus feeds the poor.

Jesus also told Pilate at his trial: “My kingdom is not of this world”! (John 18: 36). The Bible’s teaching is more concerned about caring for the less fortunate and demonstrating the love of God through that action.

Brown misinterpreted the stories of Joseph and Daniel. They did not seek power but served the various kings with wisdom. In fact, Daniel kept pointing to the eternal nature and power of God and the kings’ insignificance.

Indeed, King Nebuchadnezzar and King Darius decreed that “in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel”.

Giuliani, according to a biography of Tesla founder Elon Musk, had the rare “distinction” of being too sleazy for even the controversial businessman.

Sadly, Brown reminds me of a Biblical character called Demas. Apostle Paul cited Demas three times: the first two times, he was full of praise for him, but when Paul was awaiting execution, he mourned, “Demas has deserted me because he loves the things of this life…”

We love the things of this life in diverse ways. We witness several religious leaders who embrace the glitter and glamour of the secular world. They may still be in the church, but they have left the life of Christ.

Want to know why the Nones, as a religious group, is the fastest-growing one? Look around. Few are emulating Pastor Dottin.

This sordid episode raises another issue that Pastor Dottin discussed: was Pastor Brown considering the need for proper role models for our young? Do our ministers know nothing is persuasive about chasing the perks of power?

Scrambling for instruments of power and garlanding oneself with false degrees and superficial positions sacrifice the cause of Christ to chaos and division.
