T&T and Jamaica finish goalless, Denzil and “Natty” shine

Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica played to a goalless draw at the Larry Gomes Stadium today, in the second and final game of their two-match senior international friendly series.

The result sees the Reggae Boyz leave the twin island republic without conceding a goal, after the visitors won 1-0 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Friday.

The score summaries are an identical reversal of the two teams’ meeting in Jamaica last March when the Soca Warriors won 1-0 in Montego Bay before drawing goalless in Kingston.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Angus Eve played an experimental squad on Friday, but his team sheet was filled with familiar faces from the local leagues today.

Right back Alvin Jones wore the captain’s armband while goalkeeper Denzil Smith, midfield anchor Michel Poon-Angeron and a front four of John-Paul Rochford, Duane Muckette, Kaïlé Auvray and Nathaniel James were all in the mix.

However, the Warriors created few genuine scoring chances.

In the 43rd minute, James sent a low strike spearing into the far corner, after a Kevon Goddard incisive pass. But referee Cecile Hinds whistled for a tight offside call.

Auvray’s inviting cross across the face of the Jamaican goal in the 59th minute went unanswered, while young substitute goalkeeper Hibbert was quick off his line to deny Trinidad and Tobago forward Justin Obikwu in the 78th minute.

Jamaica had the better opportunities though.

Forward Jason Wright stabbed an effort off Smith’s left-hand post in the 19th minute. And Smith made two smart saves from Jamaica attacker Shaniel Thomas, just before the hour mark.

In the end, it was honours even for the Caribbean rivals with Jamaica finishing unbeaten in the Land of the Steelpan.

Trinidad and Tobago’s next outing will be on 23 March when they tackle Canada for a 2024 Copa America spot at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
