Refereeing clanger leaves Warriors bottom of Hex, as Joevin denied in 1-0 loss to Mexico

Dennis Lawrence tasted his first defeat as a head coach tonight as Trinidad and Tobago were edged 1-0 by Mexico in Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying action at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

The result meant that the Soca Warriors dropped to the bottom of the CONCACAF Hex for the first time in this qualifying series with four matches played and six remaining. Mexico, on the other hand, are three points clear at the top now and sitting pretty with their next two fixtures at the formidable Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

By mid-June, “El Tricolor” could book their place for the next World Cup, which is some achievement considering that they needed a FIFA play-off tussle with New Zealand to sneak into the Brazil 2014 party.

Yet, the margin of victory was razor-thin tonight. One scandalous offside decision by Jamaican referee’s assistant, Richard Washington, and one instance of dozy defending  by the Warriors backline made the difference.

Joevin Jones’ 32nd minute rocket was not given for Trinidad and Tobago while Diego Reyes’ thumping header in the 57th minute stood for the North American visitors. And it meant the Warriors’ third defeat from four matches.

The roughly 19,000 spectators present could seek solace in the fact that Mexico knew they were in a game. Joevin terrorised either full-back while the local-based central defensive pairing of Daneil Cyrus and Curtis Gonzales again did not look out of place—ably protected once more by midfield destroyer Kevan George.

And record-chasing Mexico forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez had a barren night.

But it might have been better. Mexico had not won in Port-of-Spain for 12 years and their last two trips here ended in a defeat and a draw in 2005 and 2009 respectively.

Tonight, Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio made five changes to the starting team that downed Costa Rica 2-0 in Mexico City last Friday, with only veteran defender Juan Marquez’s absence down to injury.

The pair of holding midfielders, Jesus Molina and Reyes, were arguably introduced to provide more height to defend against Trinidad and Tobago captain Kenwyne Jones and company from set pieces. Presumably, the other adjustments were meant to offer fresh legs for the visitors.

In contrast, Trinidad and Tobago made just one adjustment with Aubrey David replacing 38-year-old veteran Carlos Edwards at right-back.

Lawrence’s decision to leave Sheldon Bateau, Levi Garcia, Andre Boucaud and Radanfah Abu Bakr on the substitutes’ bench—all four of them are active for their respective clubs—was all the more surprising giving that six of the Warriors’ starting XI, including goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams and three of the back four, are either in pre-season or post-season.

Of course, thanks to GPS technology, Lawrence doesn’t have to guess as to the precise physical condition of his players—unlike his predecessor Stephen Hart—and there was little sign that his faith in Cyrus and Gonzales was misplaced.

The first half-hour was fairly even with Mexico captain Hector Moreno threatening with a header following a set piece while Hector Herrera hit a free shot wide from 20 yards. And, at the other end, Joevin tested opposing goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera with one teasing cross while Kevin Molino offered the Mexican custodian some catching practice with a low, angled effort straight at him.

Then, in the 32nd minute, came the first flashpoint. Molino picked up the ball on the counter and slipped it into Joevin’s stride to his left. And the Seattle Sounders wing-back sent a spanking left-footed effort past Talavera.

Jamaican referee’s assistant Richard Washington had his flag up early, though, and his compatriot, Valdin Legister, disallowed the item for offside. It was a terrible decision by the Jamaican pair. So much for the benefits of Caribbean free movement.

Goalless at the end of the half, the Warriors took some time to settle in after the resumption.

Just one minute into the second half, Herrera rapped the far post with a low effort from a ridiculous angle. And, in the 55th minute, Molino was incensed by a comment from Hernandez and got himself booked as players from both teams squared off angrily in the middle of the field.

The mood was still tetchy as Mexico won a corner kick, in the 57th minute and Osorio took the opportunity to introduce former Arsenal attacker Carlos Vela.

For an instant, Trinidad and Tobago minds might have wandered off. And the damage was done. Gonzales spotted the danger in Reyes’ run too late, as the defensive midfielder met Miguel Layun’s corner kick with a powerful header that flew past Williams at his near post.

It was the first goal conceded by Lawrence’s team in 237 minutes of football.

The Warriors tried to claw their way back as Joevin stepped on the accelerator. Mexican right-back Carlos Salcedo was booked for a desperate grab on the former W Connection attacker in the 61st minute while, 10 minutes later, left back Luis Reyes also saw yellow for hauling down the Trinidad and Tobago winger.

But Trinidad and Tobago were not making up much ground otherwise. Molino was crowded out and forced to the fringes of the action while substitute Jamille Boatswain, who replaced Kenwyne Jones in the 65th minute, was totally ineffective.

Forward Willis Plaza, who entered the fray in the 80th minute, did add some bite. But Lawrence’s substitutions thus far have not worked well nearly as well as his starting teams.

Encouragingly, the Warriors fought to the last whistle. But it was not enough, as they slumped to the bottom of the Hex.

Trinidad and Tobago’s next two outings are away as they travel to the United States on 8 June and then to Costa Rica on 13 June. Neither nation holds good memories for the Warriors as visitors. But failure to pick up a point or two would be disastrous.

Even if Trinidad and Tobago contrived to win their remaining home fixtures against Honduras and the United States, it would not be enough to get to Russia unless they can also snatch three to six points on the road.

From here on in, it is do or die.

  1. Don’t like the caption. It wasn’t the Jamaican ref. It was the linesman

  2. That decision cost us 3pts it changed the whole aspect of the game not only the goal was disallowed but how bout when chicharito influence a yellow card on kevin molino as well

  3. That the referee from the barca psg game or what?

  4. When a man takes his time to format his comment so readers can get a visual of how the line up should look, he means business! Lol Simone Ghirlanda…

  5. In this day and age, #Fifa does not have mandatory video replay as part of decision making – such a perfect example of how corrupt they truly are and how they promote it at every level. #fail

  6. Why not starting to work toward next cycle and changing it a bit? 3-4-3 like Juventus

    Ranjitsingh

    Bateau
    W. John M. Williams

    Cato Hyland Jomal Joevin

    Molino Britto* Levi*

Bringing in Weslie John who is formidable on headers and more technical than most available CBs allowing him to play out of the back. Much needed. More possession in the midfield with Jomal. Using M. Williams to his strength as a marker while allowing Joevin and Cato to stay wide where they have space. Trio up top built on speed. Bringing in Britto who is a prolific scorer in one of the better Concacaf leagues. Levi should start like Pulisic starts for USA. Also have *Winchester and *K. Jones as an option up front.

  7. Interesting that you mention Ranjitsingh. That’s another name that disappeared.

  8. These Jamaican officialsdid not read the script. It will be returned one day.

  9. From my viewpoint in front the half line, that was no offside goal. To make a mistake is human. But the two Jamaican referees showed a great deal of bias and incompetence. Video technology is needed in football. T&T played a great game we should have won that game we played great, made some mistakes. Plaza should have come on early and Levi Garcia should have played. Plaza brought life into the game. We have a difficult task ahead to qualify. The team is coming together, they are gelling nicely. They just have to build from here and move ahead. They have to play do or die in June, September and October. T&T supporters are very disappointing. They need to support there team make some noise and cheer the guys on and full up the stadium. Looking forward to watch the future games and go to the stadium.

  10. Despite the poor refereeing I saw a lot of positives from the T&T team. Despite ppl claiming that the Mexico team was ‘weak’ they still had players like Moreno, Salcido, Layun, Herrera, Hernandez, Jimenez who all play for big clubs and T&T did very well yesterday despite the officiating. The only downfall I saw was that Mexico looked way fitter so if T&T could work a little harder on their fitness I believe we could get some points away and still be in contention for qualification berth. Ohhhh and the referee should stay in Jamaica and referee intercol there lol

  11. Lasana Liburd, what the sense of having kenwyn as a focal point ,when he does nothing other than a high jump and a chest down..We who played football knows how hard it is to come into a game and get settled in the last 20 mins , especially being a goal down.

When it comes to a crucial goal scoring decision ,Kenwyn always gets it wrong. Where are the goals from him? Where are the goals . A striker has to score goals that’s first priority not a chest down and a fight with a defender

    • Well, do the other strikers offer more than that? If we had a bound to score at this level, then I’d say play him. But I don’t see any of the other strikers contributing more at present.

    • If we don’t give others a chance then we won’t know. Kenwyn isn’t scoring ,so if we start plaza or boatswain then we won’t know

    • Curtis Britto is the one that needs a chance.

    • Well somebody . I don’t care who just somebody. We have to try some other option.

    • I agree. Right now the offense has a focal point into a player that plays with his back to the goal. Need to change it around to make less predictable.

Why not starting to work toward next cycle and changing it a bit? 3-4-3 like Juventus

  12. One bad call could cost any team a game. If you guys saw the France vs Spain yesterday….. Video replays were used. One particular linesman made two wrong decisions which video replay made him look bad. The first incident he didn’t put his flag up when Griezman scored for France. Griezman and his teammates went off celebrating while the ref consulted with the person watching video footage and eventually the ref disallowed the goal for offside. That would have been 1 nil in France favour. Spain then scored from the penalty spot to make the game 1 nil in favour. Spain then put the ball in the back of the net again only to see the same linesman with his flag up for offside. The ref yet again consulted with the person responsible for watching video footage and then the goal was given. Again the linesman made a wrong call. Game ended 2-0 in Spain favour but without video replay the game would have ended 1-1. Time to implement video replay worldwide. With that said…. Hard luck T&T.

  13. Regardless, we were present for one half of the game. Losing, therefore, was inevitably a high possibility. Could that mean we were lucky against Panama. I think everyday next week, they need to run Chancellor and Fort George… no ball work, at all!

  14. Please name the speedy fowards so we can call them up for future games

  15. Off side you can’t win when you only play for one half.

  16. Should the coach consider playing ten competent ball players ? This means playing Joevin in his left back slot, and replacing Cyrus with Cato. The plays from the back are too slow and predictable. We have lots of speedy forwards who can go for passes directed towards the corner flag. If you review the game, see how much pressure resulted from Williams and Cyrus taking too long to figure out their passing options. Notice goals from both Mexico and Costa Rica came around the same time. The coach needs to be much more communicative to his players around this time of the match.
We can qualify, because we have players. Just make these drastic but necessary changes.
Finally, this will influence the direction of the National game, so the club coaches will realize the quality of players required to make the national team in future.

  17. Technology vital for the future of football

  18. The assistant referee or linesman was not even in place to make that call….

  19. Howwwww is Bateau not starting for Trinidad?

Why wasnt levi brought on….Lawrence’s subs leave a lot to be desired

  20. Well Brian Harry it seems that they will definitely have to hire Kevin Harrison to get that done eh, because he does it for his winning club Central F. C…..Them really good yes.

  21. And on the other hand I will really like to see Plaza and Boatswain either start together in a game because they are really starters or given at least more time in the games not 10 mins to go in the games eh what can they both do in ten minutes, they are not those kind of players.

  22. Hate to be a wet blanket but I would have expected to have properly prepared game programs with player profiles and numbers. As a foreign resident it too me a while to recognize the substitutes. Thank God I was with two people who have been involved in the game here in TT and thus know the players . Simple thing and I would have payed $40 for it- but there I go with my sport tourism and commercial hat again – poor me

  23. Yeah and I am really hoping that at his age 23 yrs old he gets a contract and head out to a professional league abroad so that he can really grow in a quick timming.

  24. Plaza looked lively I thought. He added a lil spark. Boatswain looked out of his depth. But that’s understandable because it is a big step up. So we know he would need time to grow.

    • Didnt some guys say to drop KJ because they have Botswain …dem really good yes lol

    • Yes they did. And when Boatswain got 30 minutes and didn’t deliver, they say the answer is to give him even more minutes! Lol.
Boatswain is one for the future but the present remains Kenwyne Jones. The only striker who looked capable of delivering at that level so far are Cornell Glen and possibly Shahdon Winchester.
The others have to be humble and work hard for whatever minutes they get until they prove otherwise.

    • I don’t know why you all have so much faith in this guy Kenwyn. If we are judging from kenwyn’s performance in the last year it has been horrible.

Drop Kenwyn to the bench and give boatswain a chance at starting and see what he gives. He can’t be worse than Kenwyn because Kenwyn scores nothing

    • Anyone knows what happened to johnaton Glenn? He played a couple games with us and scored and assisted against Mexico then I’ve heard nothing of him. I’m not adding to the “we need a striker party” just totally curious.

    • Good point Tevin Gilkes. He was in bad form in 2016 and I think he lost his place with his club team. I’m not sure what his fortunes are at the moment. But good shout because he did okay at this level.

  25. A jamaican shouldn’t do a trini match like tht for one if i was mexico i would think u conspiring and two as a soca warrior i would think u conspiring against

  26. Well of course we noticed that and his replacement Boatswain it seems needs to get his act together really quickly eh and also meh boy Plaza.

  27. It’s called Russian roulette Lasana

  28. Good game fellas seeing composure on the ball, but……. smh for that bad call.
And I still have this problem with T&T starting second half like a walk in the park, come on fellas we conceding to much easy goals 15-20mins into the second half to often.
More closing of angles with pressure when defending, more surprises in attack and we’ll see results.?

  29. Anybody noticed that for the two games so far, we lacked an attacking focal point when Kenwyne Jones was subbed?

    • Yesssss as soon as he left the field it seemed no one was willing to advance or try a shot. It’s as if they were looking for something that wasn’t there

    • May have tried Garcia on for Cato to help offensive focus with Kenwyne off but overall decent effort man.

    • I think we really lacked an attacking attitude esp from the midfield. They held on too long and failed to regularly release the quicker attackers that were brought on. We were not urgent enough in the final third and Mexico were hardly ever ruffled/stretched.

    • I think Joevin genuinely worried Mexico and they had to resort to tactically fouling him and then shuffling around players who were booked.
We lost some steam when Kenwyne was replaced to me because Boatswain is still learning and wasn’t linking up well with his midfield at all. Willis Plaza helped a bit in the last ten minutes.

  30. So why you left out about the players fitness level in the second half of the game eh Brian Harry

    • I didn’t leave tha out, I just didn’t mention it. I took actually notes and was using my iPad to actually take statistics so a lot I can add. I have the high points. I must also add that I liked the heart and the chemistry in the team

    • Yeah they were really impressive in the first half eh, but faded away again in the second half the same like against Panama so they really need to work on their second half game and fitness.

  31. Again I was not happy with what I saw tactically. We did not effectively use the width of the field which allowed the Mexicans to quickly consolidate on defense. In the neutral third (middle third) we held the ball too long which also allowed east consolidation by the Mexicans. Our forward passes in the final third we’re not efficient. On the other hand the Mexicans continually moved the ball from side to side and used the full width of the field. When they came into the middle our defenders had to make a choice and as such they became penetrative. I think that we are lucky that they were sloppy in the final third. We must be more deliberate about the lateral movement as a set up to the internal penetrative pass. Sometimes being less direct is more efficient

    • This only happened after the goal. Trinidad dominated the first half and Mexico were looking clueless. We switched to a 4-4-2 which had less men in midfield and thus allowed Mexico possession . We cannot make forward passes when we have one striker and he is jumping and heading balls in the midfield. We have a forward that doesn’t give you the option to thread a pass through the defense…Our forward Kenwyn is not effective in the final third.

  32. Well we have to excuse them eh it seems that the new thing in moving forward with the football is giving all LOCALS their chances no matter what Caribbean Island that they comes from and even Assistant Local Coaches to be the Head coaches of the national teams to eh. Them really good yes.

  33. Someone need to teach that line official the offside rule….

  34. Like yuh was taking a drink nah when that happened ent. hahahahaha

  35. I’m I guess in a different universe because when he collected the ball I immediately said offside. Guess I was the only wrong one

  36. Jamaicans hate towards us grows thicker… even on to the field….

  37. really dont knw what d hell that linesman was looking at

  38. It’s done and buried. Sad though. Lasana Liburd in an aside, have you heard that your boy Lionel is about to quit Barcelona?

  39. The corrupted TTFA shudda protest when they knew that the referees was going to be meh family from Jamaica eh, because Alyuh know that they doesn’t like Alyuh Trinis eh. Them really good yes. hahahahaha

  40. Of course not. it wasn’t the right call. It cost us 3 points. But he’s human . What a mistake to make though!?????‍♂️

  41. So was I right at the tunnels beautiful vantage and I knew it was a bad call wasn’t even questionable. The linesman was also making some bad offside decisions on the next end ?. We actually played a cohesive game executed beautifully out played Mexico in the first half imo to be robbed of that goal. It would have been the other way around and we would have another 3 points ?

  42. Steupppppssssss…
I was seated at the half line and could’ve told you no way that goal was offside.

  43. Lasana Liburd I was so pissed I was watching it and I was like wtf nobody was offside. Smh such a beautiful first half we were severely wronged ?

  44. Good fighting game by T&T vs the #1 concacaf team. Anybody have video footage of the “offside” goal?
