Mitchell double takes Central past Sando; Scottie scores as Stars down Civic

New Central FC captain Darren “Chucky” Mitchell made it three goals from two matches yesterday, as the “Couva Sharks” built on their winning start to the truncated 2016/17 Pro League season with a 2-1 win over Club Sando at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin.

Sando struck first as left back Kemuel Rivers grabbed his club’s first item of the season, just two minutes after the restart. But Central, who edged W Connection on Tuesday with a stoppage time Leston Paul winner, again conjured up a dramatic late winner, as Mitchell equalised in the 59th minute and then struck his third goal of the season in the 89th minute to condemn Sando to a second successive defeat.

In the second match of the Mahaica Oval double header, coach Ross Russell’s new-look Ma Pau Stars rebounded from a humiliating 5-1 loss to Police FC on their season opener to down hosts, Point Fortin Civic, 2-0.

Elton John opened the scoring for Stars in the 31st minute while veteran Jason Scotland got his first Pro League goal since his return from Britain in the 38th minute to seal the win.

Civic, who are coached by former Trinidad and Tobago player Dick Furlonge, are yet to score from open play in the season after two outings.

Pro League action continues on Sunday with a double header at the Barataria Recreation Ground, as St Ann’s Rangers tackle Morvant Caledonia United from 4pm while San Juan Jabloteh hosts Defence Force from 6pm.

And, on Tuesday, W Connection close off round two as they face Police FC from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.
