RBNYFL 25: Moka Lions roar past Carrat Shed, as captain Constantine shines

Three goals in the space of five minutes were enough for Moka Lions FC as they roared past Carrat Shed FFA 4-1 on Sunday, in a Republic Bank National Youth Football League (RBNYFL) South Zone Under-17 Division clash at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium Training Field II, Marabella.

On Match Day One last weekend, Carrat Shed trounced Penal Is Love 6-2 while the Lions were held to a 1-1 draw by Dunstan Williams Soccer Academy. What a difference a week makes.

The Lions were allowed to do as they pleased, especially in the first half, as Carrat Shed looked as if they would rather be taking advantage of the warm weather in more tranquil conditions—far away from a football field.

Moka Lions went ahead after two minutes when captain Andre Constantine angled a left-footed shot, from the left, past the dive of Carrat Shed goalkeeper and opposing skipper Tre Paul.

Constantine needed treatment twice in the first half (each half lasted 40 minutes) after receiving knocks on his right shin, but he soldiered on. His teammates, perhaps buoyed by the resilience of their on-field leader, compounded Carrat Shed’s misery with a trio of goals in quick succession.

With the notable exception of attacking midfielder Jedidah Ramsey, who operated on either flank, Carrat Shed players seemed reactive and even intimidated by their opponents—both with and without the ball.

In the 31st minute, Julien Wilson raced on to a long ball from centre-back Jashon Forde, rounded the advancing goalie and guided his right-footed shot into the vacant net.

And after Wilson was fouled by lanky Carrat Shed defender Triston Carrington in the 34th minute, midfielder Stephan-Eli Seales looped his freekick from the right flank over the leaping Paul and into the back of the net.

A minute later, Seales ended any glimmer of hope for a Carrat Shed rally with a long range shot from 30 metres, which flew over the reach of Paul.

Chances were few and far in between in the second half, but midfielder Hezekiah Gaskin pulled one back in the 77th minute with a neatly-placed right-footed shot, which was too hot to handle for Lions goalie Allan Yorke.

Maybe Gaskin’s lucky charm was the fact that, at the time, his right shin guard was on the opposite end of the field and his right shoelaces were untied.

Lions coach Joel Charles had a mixed view of his team’s performance on Sunday.

“In the first half, we started off slow but we got going and we got the goals,” said Charles. “We were more aggressive than them. We put the ball down and we were passing it around [which helped us] to get the goals.

“In the second half, we dropped our intensity and played at their level. We were not as fluid as in the first half.”

Charles suggested that his players were too relaxed after the interval, due to their comfortable lead at the time.

“I’m trying to get them out of that habit,” he said. “Our tendency is to be lackadaisical in the second half.”

Jason Paul, Carrat Shed’s coach, acknowledged that his team had “a poor game”.

“We didn’t take the chances [that] we had,” he said. “We played into Moka’s hands. In a five-minute span, they scored three goals and that [caused] the result in the game.”

However, the Carrat Shed tactician was encouraged by his team’s showing in the second half.

“We played a better second half,” he said. “It’s just to work in the midfield and the defence.”

Penal Is Love were beaten for the second straight weekend, as they lost 2-0 to Dunstan Williams Soccer Academy.

Josiah Stewart broke the deadlock for Dunstan Williams Academy after 15 minutes of play and Akeil George fired home a left-footed shot past the outstretched goalkeeper Ezekeil Vincent in the 46th.

Malique Hinds scored twice as Evolution staged a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Uprising Youths, in the first match at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium Training Field II.

Hinds netted in the 34th and 65th minutes as Evolution got the better of Uprising Youths, who twice failed to hold on to one-goal advantages.

Cyon St Louis (13th) put Uprising Youths in front but Zion Thompson (14th) responded for Evolution. Uprising Youths regained the lead courtesy Lameo Guishard in the 21st but Hinds had the final say, as Evolution notched their first victory of the season.

Also on Sunday, Point Fortin Youth Football Academy and Cox Coaching School featured in a 1-1 draw. Kymani Aberdeen’s 40th minute strike was cancelled out by Mikyael Bullock’s reply, 15 minutes later.
