Intercol 24: “El Do” stun St Augustine; San Juan’s Sween tricks Valencia

El Dorado East Secondary produced the first upset of the 2024 Coca Cola Intercol competition tonight as they eliminated Premier Division outfit St Augustine Secondary 4-3 in a penalty shootout at the Arima Velodrome.

A double from attacking midfielder Kanye Eastman saw El Dorado come close to snatching the result in regulation time, only for a Marcel Valentine penalty to send the match to spot kicks.

Yesterday, Championship Division team Hillview College took Trinity College East to penalties but could not complete the job. The “Blue Thunder” held their nerve though, with substitute Chad Nicholas converting the winning penalty to send them through.

El Dorado face San Juan North Secondary in next Wednesday’s second East Intercol semifinals at the Arima Velodrome, after a matchup between defending champions Arima North Secondary and 2023 zonal winners, Trinity College East.

San Juan North booked their spot in the final four today too, albeit with a more comfortable result.

Star attacker Lindell Sween netted a hattrick as the Bourg Mulatresse boys thumped Valencia Secondary 6-0 at the Velodrome, in the opening match of a double header.

Elsewhere, Derrel “Zoom Zoom” Garcia maintained his rich vein of form on the field as he needed a double in St Benedict’s College’s 2-0 quarterfinal win over Siparia West Secondary at the Mahaica Sporting Complex while Pleasantville Secondary whipped Rio Claro West Secondary 5-0, thanks to a first half hattrick by Jelani Roberts.

Phillip Gray got a last-minute winner in the North Intercol quarterfinals as QRC edged East Mucurapo Secondary 2-1, en route to a semifinal match up against 2023 zonal winners, St Anthony’s College.

East Mucurapo now turn their attention to the school’s final Premier Division fixture against Speyside High from 3.30pm on Sunday 17 November at Fatima College grounds on Mucurapo Road.

Mucurapo were officially relegated on Friday 1 November, after a 2-0 loss away to Signal Hill Secondary. However, they will be keeping a close watch on the ruling of the SSFL Disciplinary Committee next week in the matter of St Benedict’s College captain, Derrel Garcia.

If the SSFL drop the hammer on St Benedict’s and relegate them from the top flight, East Mucurapo could avoid the drop with no less than a win by three clear goals over Speyside.

For Speyside, the match will have a lot riding on it regardless. For now, they need a win over East Mucurapo to leapfrog Trinity East to safety.
