SSFL 24: Naparima down Malick 4-2 to climb to fifth

Naparima College climbed one spot to fifth in the 16-team SSFL Premier Division standings today, after a 4-2 win over Malick Secondary at Serpentine Road in St Clair.

“Naps” join Arima North Secondary and St Anthony’s College on 18 points. The Dial Dynamos are fourth, due to a superior goal difference, followed by Naparima and St Anthony’s respectively—although the latter two schools have a game in hand against each other.

St Benedict’s College, the division’s runaway leaders, are on 28 points.

Malick are ninth in the standings with one win from their last seven matches and 12 points in total. At the interval today, there was cause for optimism as they snatched the opening item through Jeremiah Gabriel in first half stoppage time.

But Naparima equalised and then went ahead within six minutes of the restart, thanks to goals from Jabari Rodriguez and captain Israel Joseph. And, by the final whistle, the southern juggernauts were two goals clear of their hosts—thanks to another Joseph item and a goal from defender Shabani Thompson.

Joseph has seven goals so far this season, which has him joint-second in the scoring charts alongside Fatima College playmaker Caden Trestrail and Presentation College (San Fernando) forward Caleb Boyce.

Only speedy Signal Hill Secondary forward Kyle James has scored more often, with his nine items.

Malick midfielder Josante Duncante, who got his team’s lone goal in the second half today, has now scored four times this season.

Naparima are in action again on Wednesday when they host midtable Queen’s Royal College at Lewis Street from 3.30pm while Malick are away to relegation threatened East Mucurapo secondary.
