SSFL 25: St Benedict’s on brink of title, as ‘Westmoorings Tigers’ trip up Fatima

St Benedict’s College could decide the destination of the 2025 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division trophy by Monday morning, as the “La Romaine Lions” moved within touching distance of the title today.

Two late goals from Jelani Roberts and Josiah Ochoa gave Benedict’s a 2-0 win over St Mary’s College at the Mahaica Sporting Complex. And, on Mucurapo Road, St Anthony’s College edged Fatima College 2-1—thanks to a Kanye Glasgow double.

Combined, the results virtually extinguished Fatima’s chances of defending their crown.

On Monday, St Benedict’s travel to Naparima College—and, should captain Adam “Toka” Pierre’s troops prevail, they will secure their second Premier Division title in four seasons.

A draw would still favour St Benedict’s aspirations, should they win away to Trinity College East on Monday 10 November.

Were Naparima to win against Benedict’s, though, God alone knows when SSFL president Merere Gonzales would be able to announce the 2025 Premier Division champions.

Signal Hill Secondary were granted a late postponement to their scheduled fixture against Naparima at Lewis Street, San Fernando today. And, as it stands, that game is now one of three fixtures with no scheduled date before the completion of the Coca Cola National Intercol competition.

Naparima, through no fault of their own, have no idea when their league season will finish—and it could possibly have implications to the 2025 title race.

At the other end of the standings, Trinity College East made a significant step towards safety as they edged St Augustine Secondary 2-1 at Warren Street, St Augustine. The “Blue Hawks” are now four points clear of the relegation zone.

Fourteenth placed St Augustine have two games to save themselves now and both are away: to St Anthony’s and Signal Hill respectively.

With the bottom three schools from the 16-team table set for relegation, there were signs of life from 15th placed Scarborough Secondary who held Queen’s Royal College goalless at Shaw Park, Tobago.

Scarborough are away to Trinity College East and Trinity College (Moka) next week before they host San Juan North Secondary on their final match day.

Three points from a possible nine in that period would give the newly promoted Tobago team a fighting chance.

Carapichaima East Secondary have no chance of survival though. And the best that “Caps” can hope for is to pick up a point before they leave.

Today, the lone top flight representatives from the Central Zone were mauled 9-0 from Presentation College (San Fernando) with captain Isaiah “Baby Hulk” Jacobs leading the way with five goals.

Jacobs now has an impressive 22 goals from 14 matches this season, which is more than double the tally of the second-best scorer: Josiah Ochoa (St Benedict’s College) – 10 goals.

St Benedict’s, though, are drawing closer to the defining trophy of the 2025 season.
