‘Boorish, petulant, distasteful and demeaning!’ Robinson-Regis asks Nakhid to resign, UNC Senator hits back

Minister of Planning and Development Camille Robinson-Regis: “[…] Senator Nakhid’s instrument of appointment was given under the hand of the President who is the head of the Republic, yet he has chosen to attack with such venom and vitriol, and for that alone, he should demonstrate at least a modicum of respect…”

UNC Senator David Nakhid: “[…] The trampling on our sacred constitution by two of the Republic’s highest public office holders [is] is the nuclear issue, Camille Robinson Regis, and no amount of shouting from the peanut gallery by minions like yourself, without an iota of moral authority can distract me from my Senatorial duties…”

The following are press statements by Minister of Planning and Development Camille Robinson-Regis and UNC Senator David Nakhid, after Nakhid alleged that President Paula-Mae Weekes was ‘possibly’ guilty of misbehaviour with respect to the work of the Police Service Commission:

Robinson-Regis: ‘Resign or be fired: Senator Nakhid must go’

More than 48 hours after Senator David Nakhid launched the most disrespectful attack on Her Excellency the President, Paula Mae Weekes, there is a deafening and seemingly exculpatory silence from his political leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

This is not the first time Senator Nakhid has used his social media pages to launch similar vitriolic, distasteful and demeaning attacks on persons against whom he has some angst, and, judging by his Political Leader’s silent acquiescence, it certainly will not be the last.

This latest attack, though, makes his last rant pale in comparison and as leader of the house I join with the rest of the national community in condemning this boorish, petulant behaviour and call on Senator Nakhid to apologise to Her Excellency and resign his senatorial seat.

Though I know I may be whistling in the wind, I also call on his Political Leader to do the honourable thing by offering a similar apology to Her Excellency and demonstrating her disapproval by revoking his appointment if he chooses not to resign.

Like every other citizen of our beloved Republic, Senator Nakhid has a right to disagree with the actions and opinions of any other citizen, including Her Excellency the President. That right, however, comes with responsibilities.

Senator Nakhid’s instrument of appointment was given under the hand of the President, who is the Head of the Republic, yet he has chosen to attack with such venom and vitriol and, for that alone, he should demonstrate at least a modicum of respect.

More than that, the office he holds is one that carries the weight of public scrutiny, as does the Office of the President, and notwithstanding any latent cognitive difficulties, he should be able to understand the level of respect owed to both his office and that of Her Excellency.

Senator Nakhid must apologise to Her Excellency and tender his resignation from the Senate. Failing that, he must be fired.

Nothing else will do.

Senator Nakhid responds:

In the most febrile and despicable attempt to distract attention from the shameful position the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has inadvertently found herself on the dissolution of the Police Service Commission, the Leader of the House Camille Robinson Regis must feel that the level of impunity exhibited by her boss Keith Rowley, and practiced by her in not accounting until now for the over TT$143,000 she was allegedly caught out with by an alert FCB clerk, should extend to her Bishop’s friend President Paula-Mae Weekes.

Sixteen solid days has passed and nay a word from the President nor the Prime Minister on what transpired on 12 August 2021 that led to the trampling on our sacred constitution by two of the Republic’s highest public office holders. This is the nuclear issue, Camille Robinson Regis, and no amount of shouting from the peanut gallery by minions like yourself, without an iota of moral authority can distract me from my senatorial duties.

I have been selected by the Honourable Political Leader of the Opposition to serve the people, and I will do so passionately.

Unless we the people of Trinidad and Tobago hear a definitive statement from the President and Prime Minister of our great Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, we will not only  be asking all of you to resign but to dissolve Parliament and call immediate general elections. You have no other option available to you and your party of 210 recusals.
