Russell, Holder join WI T20 squad to face England; Pooran asks to be rested

West Indies have added veteran allrounders Andre Russell and Jason Holder to their T20 International squad, as they prepare for three T20Is against England and another three against Ireland later this month.

However, the Maroon Men will be without dynamic 29-year-old batsman Nicholas Pooran, who asked to be rested for both series, according to the CWI Media, due to his Indian Premier League (IPL) exertions.

Russell, 37, and vice-captain Brandon King made themselves available for the England matches (6-10 June) but not to face Ireland (12-15 June).

The West Indies T20I outfit will also be without Roston Chase as well as coach Daren Sammy against Ireland, as they head for a Test series camp (13-21 June) in Barbados—in preparation for the three-Test series against Australia for the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy.

Jyd Goolie, a former West Indies youth player, replaces Chase for the T20s against Ireland, on the back of his encouraging performances in the inaugural West Indies Breakout League. It is his first senior team call-up.

Keacy Carty, who performed credibly in the recent One-Day International series against Ireland and England, is the other addition to the West Indies T20I squad to face Ireland.

King recently expressed interest in also representing the West Indies in red-ball competition. However, the CWI Media did not confirm whether he will also be a part of the Barbados camp.

Sammy’s assistant coaches, Floyd Reifer and Ravi Rampaul, will join him in the Test Series camp—which leaves Rayon Griffith to head West Indies’ technical team against Ireland, supported by Donovan Miller.

The CWI Media described the splitting of Sammy’s duties, a consequence of him being head coach in all three formats, as:

“A strategic move as he prepares for his first outing as head coach of the Test team, alongside the newly appointed Chase, at the critical start of the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle, where the Caribbean squad is seeking to regain its place as one of the world’s leading Test playing squads.”
