Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Under-20 Team head coach Angus Eve will trim his current training squad from 39 to 24 players on Saturday 28 May, as the junior Soca Warriors continue preparations for the 2022 Concacaf Under-20 Championship.
The two-island republic open their campaign against Haiti on 19 June in San Pedro Sula, Honduras before facing Mexico and Suriname on 21 and 23 June respectively. Out of that quartet of nations, the top three will advance to the quarterfinal stage of the competition.
The Under-20 players have been in camp at the Home of Football in Couva since last week and, during the period, have faced Ascension Tournament teams Cunupia FC, AC Port of Spain, Terminix La Horquetta Rangers and Defence Force in warm-up matches.
Eve has another practice match against Police FC scheduled as well as a behind-closed-doors scrimmage with the Guyana Men’s National Senior Team on 26 May.
The Under-20 Team should then jet off for an overseas live-in camp on the weekend or very early next week and Eve expects to play two more international friendlies there as well as a game against a ‘men’s club team of decent repute’.
However, he would not say where they were heading or which teams they expected to play once there.
“We are just finalising it so give us more time,” Eve told reporters, promising additional details next week.
The Under-20 coach said he came close to adding Arsenal Under-18 Team left-back Tino Quamina to the Trinidad and Tobago roster for next month’s competition, only for the 17-year-old to pull out owing to injury.
“He was all ready to come,” said Eve, who explained that Quamina qualifies to represent Trinidad and Tobago because of a Trinidadian father.
Still, he is not short of overseas expertise as roughly half of his current recruits are based in North America or Europe.
Eve told local football fans to look out for a mobile team that is expressive in the final (attacking) third of the field and resolute and solid in their own defensive half.
Trinidad and Tobago have until June 8 to name a 20-man squad for the Concacaf tournament, inclusive of two goalkeepers.
