‘Rum corks!’ Saintfiet axes Jomal and Cyrus; slams Joevin and Molino’s commitment

Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team coach Tom Saintfiet launched an extraordinary attack on four of his senior players today, as he accused Daneil Cyrus and Jomal Williams of arriving two hours to his live-in camp allegedly smelling of rum.

The Belgian coach also blasted Major League Soccer (MLS) players Joevin Jones, who was initially included in his 20-man squad for this week’s Gold Cup playoff matches against Suriname and Haiti, and Kevin Molino for failing to show sufficient desire to represent their national team.

Saintfiet told the media that Cyrus and Williams were dropped on the spot while Jones was also replaced.

Club Sando forward Akeem Roach, Defence Force utility player Curtis Gonzales and Orange County Blues attacker Trevin Caesar were all recalled to replace them after they were initially cut from the squad on their return from Managua yesterday.

It means England-based midfielder Andre Boucaud is the only addition to the squad that faced Nicaragua twice last week and returned with a 2-1 loss and 3-1 triumph respectively. Boucaud is expected in Trinidad on Tuesday, roughly 24 hours before kick off against Suriname, after he received an extra day’s grace to represent his club in England.

Saintfiet’s leniency with his overseas-based players is unlikely to be lost on local Pro League and Caribbean club champs, Central FC, who were told to release their players and not use them for their own clubs. The subsequent stand-off led to goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams and midfielders Nathaniel Garcia and Sean De Silva being omitted.

And although Garcia and Williams are free now—De Silva was injured at a national training session—and Saintfiet lost goalkeeper Marvin Phillip to injury, the coach ignored both players and again left them out of his squad.

Today, Saintfiet revealed internal problems with the players he did want.

“We selected 20 players [and] I have to say that three of the 20 players didn’t show up,” said Saintfiet, who was joined today by assistant coach Russell Latapy for the first time. “Two of the players came one and a half hours too late in camp and had still decent smell of alcohol around [them]. That was Daneil Cyrus and Jomal Williams.

“Both were immediately sent home back to party but are replaced in squad.”

Cyrus stressed that he did not have any alcohol though and claimed the coach was referring only to Williams.

Jones, according to Saintfiet, was simply a no-show. The Belgian coach gave special dispensation to the Seattle Sounders player to skip the Nicaragua tour after complaining about fatigue.

“I spoke with him individually and he did not show up at all for the camp,” said the Belgian coach. “So I think he has no interest to help his country to qualify.”

Saintfiet was not impressed to discover that Jones played in two charity matches over the Christmas period, after he claimed to be too tired to represent his country. And, bizarrely, Jones also represented W Connection in a friendly match against Haiti last week.

“Joevin is here on holiday and Joevin played, two days ago, a friendly with W Connection against Haiti,” said Saintfiet. “So if his club had no problem with him playing a friendly match with a club where he is not registered, I see no problem why he cannot play for his national team…

“I had face to face communication with him. I said take a few days off and see you on January 1st. I told him where and when and which time [to enter] camp and he never called or informed us in any way that he would not show up.

“So I think he has no interest to help his country to qualify.”

Remarkably, all four players dropped by Saintfiet for disciplinary reasons since he took over the reigns as head coach are wholly or part-owned by W Connection.

Last week, defender Triston Hodge became the first player to be cut after he allegedly missed one training session, turning up late for camp and failed to win over the new coach with his demeanour.

Williams, who is on loan at Mexico second division club Murcielagos FC, was next today along with versatile Connection defender, Cyrus, who has 62 full international caps.

Williams started in Saintfiet’s first game as Warriors head coach against Nicaragua on 27 December and came off the bench for the second contest in Managua. Cyrus featured as a substitute in both fixtures.

Connection are believed to have inserted a sell-in clause in their deal with Seattle, which entitles them to a slice of any revenue earned if the MLS club cashes in on Jones. Jones won the MLS Cup with Seattle last season and is Trinidad and Tobago’s top scorer in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

However, his commitment to the two island republic has been questioned before.

Hart cut Jones—along with Cyrus—for playing minor league football after skipping an international tour, supposedly due to fatigue, in September 2013. Jones was also fined by Hart for breaking camp to attend a boat party, alongside teammates Mekeil Williams and Molino, three days before a World Cup qualifier against Guatemala on 2 September 2016.

The background of the players at odds with successive national team coaches ought to alarm and embarrass Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president David John-Williams, since he is the co-founder of the W Connection team.

The national youth teams have not been spared such disciplinary issues either, as Connection teenager Isaiah Hudson abandoned the Trinidad and Tobago National Under-20 Team during their Caribbean Cup campaign last October.

Hudson’s father, Brent Hudson, insisted that the Naparima College student was injured. However, National Under-20 coach Brian Williams denied this.

Arguably, John-Williams did not help Saintfiet’s authority much when he publicly warned the coach, at his unveiling, that he would be sacked if he does not manage four points from World Cup qualifiers against Panama and Mexico on 24 and 28 March respectively.

But, thus far, the cringeworthy introduction does not appear to have inhibited Saintfiet much, as the coach has not been shy about imposing himself on the national squad. And, unlike almost everyone else at the TTFA, the new coach does not seem to be interested in holding secrets.

“[Molino] said he was not available [to play] for his country at that point in time,” said Saintfiet. “He told me he didn’t feel motivated or ready for that. And later, I [heard] he played games at lower league or social level…”

The downside to Saintfiet’s managerial style is he must now try to outdo Haiti with a notably weaker squad than Hart had last year when the Warriors fell 1-0 to the Haitians in a Copa America Centenario playoff in Panama.

And, after his bullish approach to his senior players and bravado in mentioning Connection during a broadside at Jones, this week’s qualifiers may take on increased importance for the Belgian coach.

The Warriors face Suriname from 7pm on Wednesday at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva and then tackle Haiti on Sunday from 5pm at the same venue.

It would be some accomplishment if Saintfiet can lead the Warriors to two wins regardless of the patchiness of his squad. Arguably, his authority—on the training ground and in the corridors of power—can be significantly weakened if his current squad fails to deliver for him. Perhaps irretrievably so.

Whatever is written about Saintfiet when he does depart at Piarco, he certainly will not be remembered as dull.

Now, it is up to his present squad—which includes 37-year-old captain and right back Carlos Edwards and 35-year-old striker Cornell Glen—to prove that the coach can win football matches too.

Suriname would be a good place to start on Tuesday.

  1. Its about time someone starts dealing with the prevailing attitude that exist “they need me, cause they don’t have anyone else.” Talented but indisciplined? sit your butt on the bench!!!

  2. Simone Ghirlanda I agree with you 1000% and I will never comprehend in a million years how on earth that players who are leaving our sweet country to join the real professional teams abroad and before staying at their homes before flying out the next day eh, they decides to go out and party to celebrate the night before their departure like if they already making the millions eh, but instead either got shot in their leg or get in an accident that destroys their opportunity to leave our sweet country to join the real professional team abroad Keron “Ballpest Cummings and Kwesi Blackman . Them really good yes .

    • lack of guidance and discipline.

    • Many of them are unpresentable abroad. They think they should earn 6 figures US salaries right off the bat. I know of some who turned down opportunities to play in legitimate leagues that would offer real exposure to Europe like it’s the case of Costa Rica first division because the salary wasn’t good enough. Well guess what? In Costa Rica most players make less than $2,000 USD per month yet any smart Concacaf player not playing already in MLS or Liga MX should jump at the opportunity to play in CR if playing in legitimate leagues in Europe is their ultimate goal. But no, to most it’s better hang out with the boys at home playing TT Pro league in empty stadiums if the salary is not “high” enough.

    • Shawn Babooram No I disagree. We agents and coaches and team managers invest an insane amount of time in guiding some of these players. They are just ungrateful and not hungry enough to see what it takes.

    • Yeah and another thing to Simone Ghirlanda some of the owners of the professional teams in our league does be asking for about $ 300, 000 dollars for some of their players to and they are not ready yet et all to play in the real professional league abroad, hence the reason why many of the times they are all sent right back to our sweet country Them really good yes

    • Earl Mango Pierre $300,000 is the market value of an established player in Costa Rica, not in TT Pro. There it’s less than 1/3rd of that.

  3. “The downside to Saintfiet’s managerial style is he must now try to outdo Haiti with a notably weaker squad than Hart had last year when the Warriors fell 1-0 to the Haitians in a Copa America Centenario playoff in Panama.” The upside is he gets rid of malcontents hopefully for good and go with the players who are keen on representing their country regardless of the outcome. It is time a TT coach had the balls to instill discipline on these average footballers who think we need them. What these clowns don’t understand is if other international teams are interested in them, it is Saintfiet who will be their reference.

  4. We ain’t ready they don’t care dey making money in mls

  5. Molino featuring in all these episodes, I wonder why that is?

  6. Win loss or draw, I respect the coach’s stance. I would’ve done the same. In my not so humble opinion, the talent available to us is about the same, the only difference is the extra exposure and experience which usually leads to a more self assured player in the case of the foreign based players . I find it strange that all the problems with players since the friendlies are connection or ex connection players. Lasana Liburd are you certain joevin played vs Haiti in a friendly that would be tantamount to selling guns.

  7. Our WC chances gone after Hart’s sacking smh

  8. Just what the team needs to show they serious.

  9. Good approach. This is why it’s so hard for Caribbean players to be taken seriously in Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, Europe, etc. Because of the behavior of some of them they all unfairly get put in the same bucket. Yohance Marshall, Jamal Jack, Kordell Samuel, Jerrel Britto, Weslie John are good professionals who would help this team. It’s too bad coaches and insiders have an agenda to push other players ahead.

  10. All for discipline ?? still not on Tommy boy

  11. And just imagine that the two players Jomal Williams and Cyrus represents my dictator president real professional team W- Connection eh, and that is their conduct. Steeuuppss. Them really good yes.

    • Yes mango…so two things mango….1.so I guess the coach picks his team and not Dow because sure djw couldn’t put in a word for wcfc players…and 2.so you can see what clubs go through with players here in trinidad and Caribbean by extension…and just as we do at Wcfc when it comes to taking action against our players for various reasons we sometimes get the raft from persons calling victimization and all sorts of nonsensical statements without knowing the truth..discipline is discipline….you dont abide by the rules so u pay the price be it locally or internationally…at our club we will continue our hard line on discipline… players maybe afraid to come to the program but so be it…we are there to develop players and educate…but players must take responsibility for their actions and it seems the coach is a no nonsense man…good luck to Him!! We are disappointed in the behaviours of our players but they can’t say that we haven’t been speaking day after day about what is expected discipline wise off and on the pitch…so if they got caught out of the zone then you pay the price…it should be an honour for players to wear the country’s colors …so its so disappointing to hear of this…as to regards to joevin I personally spoke to joevin after our training game against Haiti about whether he would be joining the national team because we invited him to play at least 30 mins in the game because he said he did ask his club for clearance to join the national squad on their return from Nicaragua so he was positive and hopeful and said he would be at the camp on Sunday so it’s a surprise and dont know what transpired that he didnt attend the camp…joevin has great quality and whatever transpired I hope it’s resolved because the coach we can see dont take prisoners…he seems very tough but I am sure joevin is committed but the coach needs to be reassured…hope the problem is resolved!!!

    • Yeah and here we go again what would have happened if Joevin Jones had gotten seriously injured while playing that practice game against Haiti eh, so was that the right thing to do with respect to asking him to represent W- Connection eh, and he isn’t contracted to play for your club at present. When the professional players return to our sweet country during their break from their professional clubs the only team that they should be representing is our national team eh once given the green light by their real professional clubs owners abroad, but this is our sweet country and many of our so called professionals still doesn’t behave like real professional players et all steeuuppss Them really good yes.

    • Mango, i am sure i have read of british players in the MLS re-joining their EPL teams during the break as a means of staying fit? Thiery Henry & Gerard comes to mind immediately.

    • And I yes I agree but that is with permission of their professional clubs abroad and I am 1000% certain that Joevin’s club will never give him any permission to play for his old club in any practice game eh and I think that you really missing my point and that is about him getting seriously injured while playing that game that could have ended his football career, we all know that our players just love to play the game but owners, managers, and Coaches always have to look out for their interests eh I have seen to many players make wrong decisions in the past the same like this and that was it for them bro. Them really good yes.

    • Recently I was told of a player from Carenage who was very talented and had gotten a scholarship to attend the university abroad and the day before he departed he went to St. Anthony’s grounds to watch his team from Carenage played a game and because the team was loosing he asked someone to borrow a boots and guess what happened, he got seriously injured that he couldn’t travel the next day and lost his football scholarship I asked about his whereabouts today and I was told that he is a service man now his name is “Pearce” does his name ring a bell eh and I can even tell you about another player in Brooklyn that same madness happened to eh and he himself was on his way to become a real professional player himself, so I hope that you get my drift Kester Lendor. Them really good yes.

    • Kester.. simple any player who leaves our club to go abroad can have access on their return at anytime ..to keep their fitness..its a given and as long as our head coach gets info on their arrival and having that right serious mentality to train properly because it’s not a sweat but professional training…we are always there to help and it has happened with players not belonging to our club as well…eg.molino at one time spend time training with us for his fitness…and also college players and professionals from Europe as well…but joevin did communicate to me that he would be joining the team on their return to Trinidad…so really don’t know what happened because i that from what I saw from him Haiti would have been up for a surprise so I am disappointed he is not available…for the national team.

    • And from joevin what I got was training is ok…but he was awaiting confirmation for the tournament but he would be in camp because he was positive he would’ve gotten clearance for the tournament…i saw that positive feeling in him…

    • I understand that eh Earl Jean but I wouldn’t allowed them to play against any team in any pick up game especially against another national team Haiti that is here to play against our national team in the upcoming tournament and either in our professional league while they are on break because of stupid injuries that can end their professional team contracts abroad and neither in any charity games but the training to keep in good shape before returning abroad is just fine eh. Them really good yes

    • Mango i was a professional player played out in Europe and I got clearance to train and play training games in off season as long as it was legitimate and not minor league games …my club was always appreciative of my positive position on my fitness levels off season…i wouldn’t be playing games all over the place …but if I am preparing for my up coming season or rejoining my national team st.lucia at the time it was always ok not to take in a session or two but not to go game hoping like I am some mad man…17 years and always did it by the book regarding my agent and club approvals… as.a professional player one must know the do’s and dont’s.. with regards to your professional career..

    • Earl Jean firstly I agree with you that Joevin is committed, I was happy to see him given the time off from the Nicaragua games, as he is probably the player that would have played more football than any other national. What I am not understanding, and no criticism of joevin, but why is Joevin asking Club for clearance? Isn’t this the role of the TTFA? Didn’t the TTFA have to ask for clearance?

    • What i think as a former player and what use to happen with me…if there is a situation where your club thinks that you need your rest there would have been communication with yourself and the coach ,then some dialogue would have taken place where the player if really committed would say gaffer I can play and really want to take part in the two games…i can manage this …some manager’s would give in and allow u…depends on your relationship I have been through it time and time and on both ends some strong minded managers and some that would say ok but be careful I know it’s your country…its about trust at Times with managers…as long as they see a responsible player…u get some slack… I am sure joevin would have had that feeling speaking to his association President and his gaffer that he would’ve gotten the clearance thats why he was committed to coming out to train and also the national coach knowing that he would have been training with his former club for a few days to get back in shape…

    • My one concern though Earl Jean, is given the significance of these games was it the wisest decision for him to play a friendly against a team he has to paly competitively against in 4 days.
What if the Haitians realising he is our main offensive threat decided try injure him as a means of ensuring he is unable to play on Sunday?

    • Joevin is a player I like an think has great potential don’t think I or djw or coach or anyone would do things to jeopardise his career …whether he is with us or the mls…i always get calls from agents asking about whether he is available for Europe…as a friend I can only want whats best for him and his country and his career…the boy is a great talent just needs the guidance and people around to push him in the right direction in a professional way…our players needs to have a stronger professional mind …its lacking a lot in our environment and it’s the only way to change the trend of this game in Trinidad…

    • Point taken..then again he wanted a run at them….we thought he was ok and we have had a certain confidence that we would give him20 0r 25 mins to get a feel of them so.he can have an idea and decided to bring him on …and for some concerns to the national coach was aware that he would have gotten some playing time in that training game…but I get the concern…

    • Earl Jean I have had interactions with Joevin since his youth days, and yes, he is very very talented, but he needs to always be handled very carefully. He was never rude or such, but needed that personal intervention to keep him committed. I think it is important for Coach and staff to understand this. Him and Molino are our gamechangers, just need to be handled properly. I have been hoping that they would umderstand that those around them, do not necessarily have their well-being in mind, but are just hanger-ons. Joevin Jones Joevin Jones, Kevin Nash Molino, prove the naysayers wrong.

    • Two of my favorites Che in football …i myself and I know they are not rude and have amazing personalities…think coach needs to have a sit down with them to understand what went the last few months …what really happened and worked from.there..

There are somethings that happened and in as much as I am tough on discipline I do think they need to have conversations with them to find out what really happened??? Because I know these young group of players need the right guidance…more so now … it’s important the people you have around as you start that professional journey make no mistake…

    • Earl! only question was this situation explained to the Senior team coaching staff as they allowed him time for rest to recover from his long season

    • And just imagine our players not having the right discipline in order to be a real professional player even took place in the days of the “Strike Squad” when some of them were allowed to break camp to go and party and sex down the place steeuuppsss the night before the big game against my second sweetest country eh, and even the present Coach of the under 20 team Brian Williams was also involved in the madness when he was rushing back to ketch the maxi taxis when his vehicle almost went over a precipice along with other players in his vehicle fuss they were late and could Alyuh imagine that on the way to the HC stadium from Fyzabad the manager took the whole team to a church eh, while my second sweetest country team was at the Radison Hotel resting and waiting patiently to play the game eh and by then when our team finally reached the stadium to play the game it took them almost 4 hours in order to do so eh and another 30 minutes just to enter the stadium because of the enormous huge crowds eh, so the discipline problems with many of our players is really a culture thing eh, and as Nigel Myers once said, unless we finally have a culture shift, nothing won’t be changing eh. Them really good yes.

  12. I’ve noticed most Trinis don’t appreciate quiet diplomacy, they love to be shamed. Well done Coach, what Hart should’ve done a long time

  13. Something is not making sense. Are these players owed money by chance? I don’t understand how all this occurred at once.

  14. Steeeeuuupppsss. Like this Damian de Gannes Them really good yes. Hahahahahaha

  15. I applaud him for being brave, outspoken and taking the bull by the horn no excuses win or lose its serious business represent you country with pride man

  16. Everything Cancel out it self under Hart they would all be in the team still well done coach ???

  17. Wow am beginning to like this coach…

  18. We need a steupse emoji for this group.

  19. If they don’t want to play, then plainly come out and say so; don’t pussyfoot and give a half-hearted “yes” and then turn around and be a no show.

  20. I once heard a line in a movie with Will Smith….. “either you’re incredibly smart or incredibly stupid” …… time will tell which one the coach is….

  21. I dunno if we gonna win (I’m not foolish enough to think a win vs Nicaragua indicates instant progress …particularly with our defense)….what I do expect …is there is gonna be more effort ……. the people left out with the exception of Jan are indicative of a lackadaisical approach that wormed its way into the team recently

  22. This seems like JW’s plan all along

  23. If Saintfiet defeats Haiti with this team, he deserves a two contract! Lol.

  24. While I do not support indiscipline, I am hesistant to conclude that Jones and Molino are not committed to represent T&T..they are KEY players in the set up.and I ask the Belgian to reopen the door for these players..

  25. If we lose without these players,I believe that the younger players would have a better prospective of what it takes to remain on the national team.

  26. The man is calling it as he see it Trinidad football needs this we like to much stupidness and nonsense. Party vibes to be exact. How come all the trouble makes coming from one club or is in some way associated with them.

  27. … Carlos and Glenn even bothering with this team though?

  28. Molino …Cyrus …Jomaal…. Joevin …. lol ….. I’m ok with them staying out ….

  29. I Ike his bravado. I’m sure many other coaches would have liked to do it but didn’t have the courage. As long as his bravado doesn’t turn to arrogance I’m good. Seriously though, Molino has a long way to go to make it back with the national team if what the coach is saying is correct. His distaste for representing us is very apparent

  30. Punish them to the highest. Expell they Ass.

  31. i totally disagreed with his appointment but i must say i like his no nonsense approach..pride to represent the red white and black is badly needed…time to get serious

  32. The Saint have to remember his pool of international quality players ain’t that big.
Man management is key. He has to ensure he doesn’t lose certain players altogether

  33. Yes he does …. I hope these guys buck up though and not see this as an opportunity to walk away from the national team ..

  34. Tom has balls. That’s for sure. Lol. Never let that be questioned.

  35. Saintfiet sure can dish it out. Wow. I’m not sure if this is the wisest response to what happened. But wow.

  36. I agree with his disciplinary actions … guys are doing things that they would never or dare not do with their clubs …

  37. Bravo Tom… I haven’t seen your tactics as yet but to rebound from a defeat and win away from home is good, giving new players opportunities is even better don’t back track ????

  38. I agree that I am happy for him to take a stance. This is pretty extraordinary stuff though. Most coaches won’t be as blunt with the public.

  39. Kudos to the coach. He is standing for discipline. For too long guys take the national team as a sweat and a tour. I don’t know if we will win but if he does, what a way to send the right message.

  40. Well done coach,if you’re not disciplined enough take ah bench this nonsense have to stop with these so call big players!!!!

  41. Tom has absolutely nothing to lose one way or the other – that may be a better position than people think.

  42. I still question his quality but I 100% respect and agree with his stance

  43. I suspect the coach may rue not picking Jan Michael Williams for these Gold Cup qualification games.. Good luck to him though!!

  44. It’s Christmas time wtf.give d guys a break.
