  1. Lasana, I believe before the season started there was an article about this player, and the coach defended his decision by arguing that he still has to get subjects etc…

  2. Sam’s spelling caused a stir, particularly considering his extra years in school. But I’d leave that to Kermit… Maybe just the typos that affect us all from time to time. 🙂

    • I understand the penchant for text speak and i guess that getting the vernacular into what you are trying to say is important as well …….but yea Kermit

  3. am i the only person that wants Hayden Tinto to be on that list? He was a force to be reckoned with every season that he played. i guess he suffered from the fact that Malick wasnt able to win a titile with him in the line up.

oh and Brent Sam. You have to type better than that …the way that you represent yourself online says wonders about your literacy and pigeon holes you into the area of dumb jock

  4. Just like Travis Mulraine I’m tempted …..to reply to Sam ‘making his case’…..I’ll be quiet for now

  5. It’s unfortunate that Kester Cornwall from St Benidicts Didn’t make that 90s and Gary (Fatima/St Anthonys) 2000 also Erasto Neptune from Naps

  6. I’m tempted to say something but I won’t.

  7. Thanks for this list Lasana Liburd & the one done by Wired868. As a tax payer, I can assure fellow hardworking taxpayers that these guys will be invited to join the UTT football team. With the university’s resources/facilities, hopefully SSFL players can be part of national youth ‘B’ team with academic opportunities.

  8. Fuh real bro Dem talking thing they don’t know nah

  10. Successful and skilled two different things. Your guys were in the age of money and tv. Leroy and the likes were much too early. Even so check out the NSL in US during the times of Pele et al

  11. Well, the most successful player the Caribbean ever produced would be a conversation between Dwight Yorke and John Barnes.
And if you threw in Suriname, although it is located in South America, you have Clarence Seedorf and Edgar Davids too.

  12. Allur don’t understand even doh I didn’t win anything I was d person who carry my team naps whole team can play tell who frm naps can do wat I did but allur only talking be real

  13. Leroy is not just best schoolboy player but the BEST EVER PLAYER this country has seen and arguably in the Caribbean

  14. The bias here is not only obvious but saddening….I also think that the discussion has gone past SSFL greats and toward T&T FOOTBALL greats….it’s a fine line I concede, but there have been players who lit up the schools league and didn’t do much on the national/international front

  15. Sam before Sandy from naps?

    Nah man…..

  16. This De Leon sends congratulations to that De Leon.

  17. Well, since they selected the best players from each era. I am absolutely certain you deserved to be included Anthony. I went to a game in Petrotrin during the WPL and, for some reason, one fan began reminiscing about “Tarzan Tony”. Lol.
You are more revered than you think.

  18. ..You would think that would be a redundancy, wouldn’t you? But we are winner take all people. From cultural competitions to TT Pro League Cup competitions. “We are the champions, no time for losers”..Sigh..

  19. Don’t have to hate one to appreciate the other. Great players from different eras.

  20. You said it accurately…when the ball is at his feet. When it’s not at his feet, he became a liability. I have no doubt what Gally would say because offensively Dillie was a better player than Latas and he also played defense. In fact, he was a defender before he played midfield. But I will ask him when I see him.

    • Which attacking player shines when the ball isn’t at his feet? Messi? Neymar? Ronaldo?
      I find that point baffling.

    • Lasana Liburd I’m not surprised because I said nothing about shining off the ball. I said he is a liability. He plays no defense as a midfielder. By the way if you saw the thrashing of Brazil by Germany you may have noticed how great players run off the ball. That’s his other weakness, he doesn’t run off the ball, something the Germans have perfected which was a staple of football back in the day. It made defending harder since you had to watch the player with the ball and still be aware of the run that your man is making. Latas plays on a dime. Everyone seems to forget the discussion is one of comparison not about whether Latas is great or not.

    • Latapy is not a midfielder in the classic sense. He is a number 10, which is more of a support striker these days.
He is an extremely intelligent footballer and I’m amazed that you don’t think he can run off the ball.
No, he does not track back. But few coaches would ask him too when he has a player man marking him.
Anyone who has followed Latapy’s career saw him shine against superior teams. He did that consistently at club and international level.
I think you are wrong. He was no liability. He helped his teams pull off memorable wins against superior sides.

    • Lasana Liburd It’s as if I said nothing. Let me repeat this one more time and I’ll leave this site for good. This argument began as a comparison between Latas and the trio of De Leon, Cummings and Archibald. Including yourself, everyone seems to be taking the points as attacking Latas. Most of the people on this site have never seen that trio and are making the discussion about Latas’ greatness. It was a comparative argument. I will leave Latas’ greatness’ to the group thinkers on this site. I’m outta here.

    • You were the one who spoke to Latapy’s limitations. But no problem.

    • I understand Gerard Johnson’s argument and can agree….up to a point. That point is up to when he shifts the goalposts and ‘attacks’ latapy via the liability and limitations statement. I, too have heard elder folk fawn over de Leon more so than latapy and that is fine. But to be so dismissive of a world class talent is very offensive to me as a player, a fan and a TT national. Track back? Latas? Lol…why? Latapy was special enough to be afforded privileges even gifted footballers were not. Furthermore, latas mere presence on a field had opposing defenders occupied regardless of which 3rd he was in. If one thinks de Leon is better then fine….but there’s no need to tear down another player to do so….especially Latapy

    • Carlon Garcia If I compared Portuguese Ronaldo with Messi and I pointed out that Messi is heavily left footed while Ronaldo is gifted with both equally. And I further pointed out that Messi is not a great header of the ball while Ronaldo is. Am I being dismissive of Messi? I acknowledged early Latapy’s offensive talents. I then said that De Leon was a better offensive player but he also played defense. I gave the nod to Deleon because he is all round a better footballer than Latapy. That’s being dismissive of Latapy?
PS: For the sake of argument Look Loy said it was like comparing Messi and Pele. I would argue it’s like comparing Messi with Maradona. You compare Pele with Di Stefano. Messi is yet to overcome whether he is better than Maradona.

  21. I have never seen a guy more talented with a football at his feet than Russell – but I’ve listen to many of the older heads talk in amazement of Deleon’s ability – it’s a crying shame that there is no footage of these greats from the early days. Lasana, it would be interesting to hear Gally’s opinion on this…he’s played with Deleon and coached Russell…

  22. For the record Lasana, I have no desire to be mentioned in this list nor do I think I deserve to be included – there are far better players that I myself looked up too when I was younger…it was a pleasure to see Leroy Deleon though – I heard so much about this amazing footballer…

  23. I agree Isaiah Hudson deserved to be MVP

  24. Nothing would change now but Collin Rocke,Collin Osbourne,Lalchan and maybe

  25. Do you remember the player Quntin Thomas

  26. Lasana,Sherdon Ifm Pierre is right no way you can exclude a player who had the college league at his mercy as Gorean Highley had.

  27. Good point Shaun – in the early days you could repeat school up to three times – so often times you had 18/19 year olds playing with and against 14/15 year olds. Advantage!

  28. Lol – any talk about Trini football must include Latas and Yorke. They have accomplished far more than any of the earlier greats. Not to say our earlier greats wouldn’t have done the same had similar opportunities been there.

  29. ..I saw them all. Coached against Yorke. It’s just opinion professor. No need to come unglued..LOL..

    • I just get tired of those who think Latapy is a great player. He’s very skilled and a joy to watch when he has the ball but he has too many limitations.

    • ..LOL..OK profe. Tell Porto that. They made him the first Trini to play in what is now the UCL..

    • Keith Look Loy How many games he played?

    • Keith Look Loy Greetings to everyone,

I am a Trinidad and Tobago football fan, and I have come to you seeking information on Russell Latapy, who won the Superliga with you in 94/95 and 95/96 and also played in the Champions League at the time.

In case you may not know, Latapy is considered one of TNT’s all time legends, and I am working on collecting information for a documentary on his career.

Anything that anyone can tell me about his role, position, relationship with the coach/other players with whom he played, output, impression that Porto fans had of him, and especially any links or directions as to how to obtain video footage of him at the time would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all very much in advance

He was a decent player for Porto but had trouble cracking the starting lineup. I remember seeing him play a few times but don’t recall any special moment that he gave Porto. You might want to research his time with Academica where he started his career in Portugal and that’s where he was noticed.

    • Gerard – You don’t think Latas is one our best ever? Seriously? ?? I think 99.999% of Trini will not agree with you. And by the way you’re the only person missing to make it 100% lol lol

    • Carlos Lee Just like yourself, that 99 percent never saw Cummings, De Leon or Archibald play, so that disqualifies you all. Your age is a dead giveaway. You are dealing with hearsay. I saw all of them and Latas don’t even come close. In fact Latas play the style of football Trinis have always loved. We like to look pretty but end up losing.

    • I think DeLeon is the best ever. Vision, technique, shot, work rate, heading, dribbling strength , my question DeLeon is ahead of all. The At. Benedicts team at that time was the best ever.

    • I’ll take Latapy’s limitations everyday of the week

    • Latapy was a pretty loser? I’d admit that I have seen very few footage of the players before the 1980s. From what I saw to be honest, Warren Archibald is the one who really made me sit up straight.
But that is just from I saw. I saw Latapy play for Porto against Sampdoria and Inter in European competition. Sampdoria had Platt and Mancini. Inter had Paul Ince and I think Djorkaeff. Each time, Latapy more than held his own.
Latapy was a rare talent. I can’t say if he was better. But I wouldn’t be so dismissive of him.

  30. Let me tell you all something. Don’t ever put Russell Latapy’s name in a discussion about Cummings, DeLeon and Archibald. He does not belong in that company. Anyone making that argument never saw that trio play or experienced the high quality of college soccer at that time.

  31. SSFL, Player of the Year should have been awarded to Isaiah Hudson of Naparima College, he top scored and his team won everything. Wonder what criteria was used to award Sam whose team placed 10th.

  32. ..And Cyd Gray was denied entrance to the Cyd Gray Stadium in Roxborough recently
He produced his ID card and a smile and got in..

  33. Dwight Yorke will never have to a buy a drink in Manchester for the rest of his life and fans in Birmingham still respect Stern John for helping them win promotion.
Here, people will get vex if Sparrow, David Rudder or Black Stalin get to jump the queue in the bank. Lol.

    • But, Shadow, Rickey Jai, and Denise Plummer get robbed and a national player got shot the other day. So jumping de line in de bank and not getting selected on a list pales in comparison to how we really treat our heroes.

  34. By the way, I think it is crazy that Quinn Rodney from Shiva Boys HC didn’t make that All-Star team. He is one of the most dynamic players in the entire competition.
And if I were to recommend a signing, if Rodney isn’t the first player on my list then he would definitely be in the top three.

  35. ..We have no sense of, or respect for, our history. Just look at the Magnificent Seven or the Greyfriars episode..

  36. It is a huge shame that we lack video footage on our stars. I bet $500 that no media house can find footage of Latapy at Tranquil much less Gally at Fatima or De Leon at St Benedict’s…
But if I go online now, I’m sure I can footage of Didi passing the ball back in the 1950s!

  37. Earl Mango Pierre… The official all-time SSFL list.

  38. ..I saw de Leon and my two preferences. But I hear you. It’s the same debate with Pele and Messi. But the omissions in this list are glaring..

  39. Keith, I know many a veteran who said Leroy De Leon was better than Russell Latapy. (Although some said Warren Archibald was better than both of them and there were some who said Gally too). In the absence of video footage, I simply cannot judge.
I agree with Nigel that a breakdown by positions would have been nice. Dwayne Demming was the best colleges defender I ever saw.
Tall, quick, extremely skilful and technically sound… He is an omission. But any list like this will always have omissions.
I think Darin Lewis should have been there too. And Colvin Hutchinson.

  40. ..The selection panel, whoever they are, failed to do a good job. And my player of the first 50 years would be Latapy, followed by Yorke..

  41. These types of awards and recognition would hold more weight if we knew the criteria involved and who actually makes the selection. For example, Leroy De Leon is chosen as the best ever player over the last 50 years, but why? They should at least have some kind of write up about what he did, when he did it, the impact he had and so on. At least the list of coaches was accompanied by the number of titles they won. The players by decade should be broken down by position so wider recognition can be given.

  42. I can make a list of other players especially from.the 2000s Julius James , Yohance marshall they were the best defenders by farrrr

  43. That’s how he got the name “Maro”
Ratty was the best in my Era I believe… didn’t see any do it better.

  44. Sherdon Ifm Pierre, look back at that list of the 1990s again. Kevin Jeffrey was a menace in the SSFL for sure… I remember that squad with him and Loobie. But that 1990s list was mean.
Highley should probably have gotten in.

  45. I couldn’t dare watch through that list again without noticing the absence of Kevin Jeffreys and Gorean Highley
