Big 5: Speyside seal Premier spot with Mucurapo West romp; Tobago nears SSFL history

Speyside Secondary secured the last promotion spot for the 2026 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division season yesterday afternoon, with a resounding 6-0 win over Mucurapo West Secondary in First Citizen Big Five action at Speyside.

It is the second time that Speyside, who were demoted in 2024, forced an immediate return to the top flight SSFL competition—after also bouncing back from relegation via the Big Five tournament in 2018.

Speyside Secondary are through to the 2026 Premier Division, after a 6-0 win over Mucurapo West Secondary in a First Citizens Big Five contest on 26 November 2025.

They join 2025 Big Five winners Hillview College and Mucurapo West into the Premier Division, while Palo Seco Secondary and Presentation College (Chaguanas) must return to their respective zones.

Speyside, who still have to host Presentation (Chaguanas), could not catch Hillview but needed just one point from two games to ensure promotion.

At halftime yesterday, they led by a solitary Selon Guy goal. The floodgates opened in the second half, though, as Jabari Roberts and Ryan George both netted doubles as their North Zone visitors wilted.

Premier Division strugglers Carapichaima East Secondary and St Augustine are heading in the opposite direction—although the “Green Machine” can still appeal the forfeit ruling that confirmed their demise.

And one from Scarborough Secondary and San Juan North Secondary will also be demoted from the top flight.

Should Scarborough survive, the Premier Division will have three Tobago schools for the first time in 2026.

Incidentally, the possibility comes at the same time that Signal Hill Secondary are threatening to be the first time outside of the North and South Zones—and also the first secondary school—to win the Premier Division.
