Dear Editor: TTFA is setting up Women Soca Warriors to be humiliated

“[…] The Women Soca Warriors are going to get pummelled because we deliberately chose to ignore their programme.

“It seems to me that we are a culture that likes to see women being humiliated. We will invest heavily in men’s sports, especially football, but will neglect our women and make excuses…”

The following Letter to the Editor on the perceived neglect of the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s National Senior Football Team was submitted to Wired868 by Marlon James:

After reading Asha James’ letter, I decided that I just had to get involved in this latest bit of bashing.

First of all, the contents were rather disturbing. Three and a half months before the Concacaf qualifiers and not even a head coach of the Women Soca Warriors? Insanity! Pure insanity!

Also, three months before the same qualifiers and the team is still dormant? Kieron Edwards and company must be either high or blatantly delusional.

How do you expect the team to qualify for the Women’s World Cup without proper preparation? Are you really expecting the women’s team to pull a rabbit out of a hat and achieve this?

Wake up and smell the coffee; this isn’t The Matrix! The Women Soca Warriors are going to get pummelled because we deliberately chose to ignore their programme.

It seems to me that we are a culture that likes to see women being humiliated. We will invest heavily in men’s sports, especially football, but will neglect our women and make excuses.

Millions of dollars have been pumped into the men’s programme since we were taken out of normalisation but not a dime has been spent on the women’s players. And we call this equality.

So what on earth did Edwards and his ilk get elected for? Simply to wear flashy suits, pander to Emperor Infantino and have glorified resumes?

We can’t beat teams like Guyana, Panama and Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico beat us the last time around… But that has gone noticed by the current regime of fools. After all, it’s the women’s fault.

They were supposed to learn in three months what other teams take years to learn, but they were too slow. They need to learn faster, I guess. Yeah right!

I make no apologies for declaring that Edwards has done nothing for the women’s programme, doesn’t care to improve it and would continue to ignore it. And because Asha James spoke out, I expect that she would be blacklisted for the team.

The senior women’s players should focus on their club careers and forget about national duty as it doesn’t pay off. Not as long as folks with no vision and fools in three-piece suits continue to be in charge of the game.
