Gosine stars as T&T Red Angels hammer Vincy Heat; Jamaica trounce T&T U20s

Two matches, each involving a Trinidad and Tobago women’s team, were contested in the Jewels of the Caribbean Under-20 tournament yesterday at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

Both scorelines read 4-0. But it was a mixed day for the host nation.

The T&T Red Angels (the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s National Under-17 squad) cruised past Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the first match of Wednesday’s double-header but the T&T White Angels (Trinidad and Tobago Women’s National Under-20 team) were trounced by Jamaica in the latter fixture.

This was the second straight defeat for the White Angels, as they suffered a 1-0 loss to the Red Angels at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Malabar on Tuesday.

The White Angels, coached by former TT midfielder Dernelle Mascall, are currently fourth in the five-team standings with one point from three games. Dominica are in the cellar position, after losing all three matches thus far.

The Red Angels lead the standings with a 100-percent record after three games (nine points), followed by Jamaica (seven points from three games) and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (five points from four matches).

The T&T White Angels and Dominica fight for a spot in Friday’s third-place playoff against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines when they square off today from 2pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium.

The T&T Red Angels and Jamaica meet at the same venue from 4pm, in a prelude to Friday’s Championship match.

Yesterday evening, the ‘Reggae Girlz’ made light work of the Trinidad and Tobago U-20s in a match they dominated from start to finish—neither of the two goalkeepers used by Jamaica, Sajane Anderson and Solange Brown, had a save to make in the 70-minute affair.

White Angels custodian Maya Figgener made two crucial saves from close range to deny Jamaica winger Olivia Ashbourne and striker Tiny Seaton in the seventh and 16th minutes respectively.

But it was a case of third time lucky for Jamaica in the 25th minute, when Ashbourne, operating on the left flank, collected a defence-splitting pass from Alyssa Stephenson and squared to Seaton, who placed her right-footed shot past Figgener to her left.

The White Angels were slow in attack and defence while, on the opposite end, the Jamaica midfield trio of Destiny Powell, Cassandra Smith (who both operated just in front of their defence) and Stephenson controlled the tempo and had the Trinidad and Tobago players chasing shadows.

Smith doubled Jamaica’s lead just before the halftime whistle with a thunderous right footer from distance after White Angels captain Anastasia O’Brien was slow to close her down.

Mascall made four substitutions at the start of the second half but it made no difference as the Leacroft Lettman-coached Jamaicans continued to assert their authority.

And a Powell strike and a penalty from captain Jaileah Cox-McPherson—after a needless push on the back of Stephenson by White Angels midfielder Gabby Ramdeen—completed the score summary.

Earlier, the Ayanna Russell-coached Red Angels kept their own hot streak going as Orielle Martin snatched her fifth goal of the tournament before a Nikita Gosine double meant a comfortable three-goal lead by the halftime interval.

And an own goal by SVG defender Kelisha Bowens, as she tried to clear after Red Angels midfielder Ty’kaiya Dennis’ shot struck the post, added gloss to the scoreline.

Jamaica and the T&T Red Angels, undoubtedly the two teams of the tournament, will now cross swords for the first of two meetings over the next 48 hours.
