Carty gets WI T20 call-up; Charles returns while Shai and Sherfane pull out

Middle-order batter Keacy Carty is set to make his T20 International debut for the West Indies this month, after being announced in a 15-man squad to face Bangladesh in a three-match series staged in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The two teams are scheduled to do battle on 15, 17 and 19 December at the Arnos Vale Stadium.

Carty, 27, averages 41.13 runs from his 37 One Day Internationals (ODI) for the Maroon Men and got his first century in an eight wicket win against England last month.

West Indies coach Daren Sammy suggested that Carty, who averages 21.62 with a high score of 42 from four Tests, can offer something in multiple formats.

“He has shown us [during the 2024 CPL competition] that he could be a batter in that format,” Sammy told CWI Media, “and playing against Bangladesh, a team we cannot take for granted, we need all hands-on deck.”

Veteran Johnson Charles is also recalled to the squad after being “sidelined for the past two series due to injury”.

He and Carty join the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Evin Lewis, Roston Chase, Alzarri Joseph and captain Rovman Powell.

Batsman Shimron Hetmyer, who featured in West Indies’ 3-1 T20 series defeat to England in November, was not retained. CWI Media also revealed that batsneb Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford are available due to “commitments in the Big Bash League”.

Spinner Akeal Hosein will also miss the final match of the Bangladesh T20 series for similar reasons, with Jayden Seales carded to take his place.

“The squad was carefully selected with the players available to us, and I believe this is our most settled squad with the experience needed to win championships,” said Sammy, who suggested that he is focused on “continuity and preparation for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup”.

“We all would love to give the Caribbean people a good pre-Christmas gift by winning the series to close off the year, especially for the people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines who didn’t get to see the West Indies team during the World Cup.”
