Dear editor: Desmond Haynes had last laugh; Carty and Athanaze have great potential

The following letter to the editor on the job of West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes was submitted to Wired868 by Kendell Karan of Chaguanas, Trinidad:

Congratulations to the West Indies on winning an ODI home series against England for the first time since 1998. Hats off gentlemen—it wasn’t a weakened squad, England is England!

Now, before the squad was announced, the elephant in the room was Daren Bravo’s exclusion. But Desmond Haynes has silenced the critics with this series victory in emphatic fashion.

Keacy Carty has the potential, I now understand why there is that focus on him, same with Alick Athanaze. Their techniques are ideal for top order batters—in this format that is. However, we’ve got a long road ahead to challenging for the ODI World Cup.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) lead selector Sir Desmond Haynes.

Now, Haynes can’t continue to put his neck on the block like that before a series, and ought not think the team would bail him out all the time. Because when they don’t, he’ll get the heat.

The criteria for selection in Tests, ODIs and T20s must be finalized and clearly outlined. The best must be rewarded in the regional 4-day Test Championship, the regional Super 50 and the CPL.

Cricket is all about statistics, and data transcends bias and favoritism. Therefore data for batter, bowler, wicketkeeper and fielder should be paramount for selection.

  1. ATHANASE has a good strategy to get behind the ball so he can be in control of his shots, but he moves across to early exposing himself as a good L B.W candidate.Bowlers can quickly pick that up, which can be one of his weakness.
He needs to pick up the line of the ball from the bowler’s hand, not moving across too qy

    • Athanaze has been out LBW three times in his last five innings, five times in his ten innings for the West Indies.
You might be on to something; how can we ensure that the batsman, the coaches and/or the relevant CWI officials are alerted?

  2. Looking at the game last evening, I am convinced that Athanase needs some urgent assistance with his footwork. He is seen moving both feet across the crease, then stopping and moving his feet again only after the ball is delivered.
He should look at Smith of Australia to see effective footwork.
    Coaches, my two cents.
