St Mary’s flatten Belmont 19-0, as Intercol 23 kicks off with usual goal rush

St Mary’s College and Queen’s Royal College (QRC) scored a combined 30 goals without reply today, as the Coca Cola National Intercol competition kicked off with typical lopsided results in matches featuring first and second tier schools.

The “Saints” hosted Championship Division outfit Belmont Secondary on Serpentine Road and cruised to an eyewatering 19-0 finish in the North Zone Preliminary fixture, with flanker Ryan Radellant and Aadil Abdul-Hakeem scoring four goals apiece while captain Kyle Phillip notched a hattrick.

And at the nearby QRC ground, the “Royalians” thumped another Championship team, Diego Martin Central, 11-0 with hattricks from forward Musaddiq Mohammed and flanker Micah Nelson.

The third North Zone affair today featured two teams from the second tier competition, with Championship winners Blanchisseuse Secondary edging Mucurapo West Secondary 1-0 in Blanchisseuse, thanks to a goal from Aaron Marcano.

St Mary’s and QRC move on to play East Mucurapo Secondary and Malick Secondary respectively in Friday’s North Zone Quarterfinal round while Blanchissese are away to St Anthony’s College.

Heavy rainfall forced a postponement of a fixture between Trinity College and Tranquillity Secondary at Moka and the game was promptly rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The winner from that contest will tackle defending Intercol champions Fatima College on Friday.

There was one preliminary match in the East Zone today, as El Dorado West Secondary survived a late scare to edge Five Rivers Secondary 4-1 on kicks from the penalty—in another contest involving two Championship teams.

A Donte Gordon double and a Nicholai Marshall item put El Dorado West three goals clear at the interval, only for Five Rivers to rally after the interval. And with El Do leading 4-2 as the match entered the final 10 minutes, Jeremiah Sampson set up a dramatic finish with a late double that brought the teams level at 4-4 after regulation time.

In the end, El Dorado West coach Kevin Changa had goalkeeper Javan Charles to thank for their survival as he saved two penalties to help them see off Five Rivers in the shootout.

Their reward is a quarterfinal clash with San Juan North Secondary in Bourg Mulatresse on Thursday.

In the South Zone, there were four Championship Division schools in action as Siparia West Secondary downed Princes Town West Secondary 3-0 in Palo Seco, with Elijah Jones scoring twice, while Point Fortin East Secondary edged ASJA Boys (San Fernando) 5-3 via kicks from the penalty mark, after a 1-1 regulation time result.
