TTSL round-up: “Froggy” gets debut goal as Santa Rosa whip Erin FC to stretch lead

FC Santa Rosa moved three points clear of the Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) pack—albeit having played an extra match—as they whipped lowly Metal X Erin FC 4-1 last night at the Arima Velodrome, Arima.

The result pushed the “Big Cannons” to 24 points with a goal differential of plus-19. Cunupia FC and Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) remain within striking distance with 21 points each. Cunupia have a goal difference of plus-13 while QPCC’s differential is plus-10.

QPCC are in action again on Sunday when they face RSSR FC from 4pm at the St Mary’s College ground on Serpentine Road while Cunupia tackle second from bottom Petit Valley/Diego Martin United from 4pm at the St Anthony’s College in Westmoorings.

Yesterday, Santa Rosa unveiled new signing and former National Under-20 winger Akeem “Froggy” Garcia and the skilful attacker—who won the Pro League with North East Stars last season and was a mid-season transfer from W Connection—put his new employers ahead within 28 minutes.

Coach Derek King’s team had to wait until five minutes into the second half for their next item, as free-scoring midfielder Kheelon Mitchell grabbed his seventh goal of the season. Only Cunupia FC forward Kevon “Showtime” Woodley (10 goals) and Police FC attacker Jason Boodram (nine goals) have scored more.

Erin FC did create a minor score as Akinola Williams pulled a goal back in the 70th minute. But Rosa winger Kishun Seecharan, another ex-national youth player, grabbed a late double to ensure a comfortable win for the hosts.

At present, Erin are 12th in the TTSL’s 14 team standings.
