Leroy is not just best schoolboy player but the BEST EVER PLAYER this country has seen and arguably in the Caribbean
The bias here is not only obvious but saddening….I also think that the discussion has gone past SSFL greats and toward T&T FOOTBALL greats….it’s a fine line I concede, but there have been players who lit up the schools league and didn’t do much on the national/international front

Lasana Liburd I’m not surprised because I said nothing about shining off the ball. I said he is a liability. He plays no defense as a midfielder. By the way if you saw the thrashing of Brazil by Germany you may have noticed how great players run off the ball. That’s his other weakness, he doesn’t run off the ball, something the Germans have perfected which was a staple of football back in the day. It made defending harder since you had to watch the player with the ball and still be aware of the run that your man is making. Latas plays on a dime. Everyone seems to forget the discussion is one of comparison not about whether Latas is great or not.
Latapy is not a midfielder in the classic sense. He is a number 10, which is more of a support striker these days.
He is an extremely intelligent footballer and I’m amazed that you don’t think he can run off the ball.

Anyone who has followed Latapy’s career saw him shine against superior teams. He did that consistently at club and international level.

I then said that De Leon was a better offensive player but he also played defense. I gave the nod to Deleon because he is all round a better footballer than Latapy. That’s being dismissive of Latapy?

I have never seen a guy more talented with a football at his feet than Russell – but I’ve listen to many of the older heads talk in amazement of Deleon’s ability – it’s a crying shame that there is no footage of these greats from the early days. Lasana, it would be interesting to hear Gally’s opinion on this…he’s played with Deleon and coached Russell…

Good point Shaun – in the early days you could repeat school up to three times – so often times you had 18/19 year olds playing with and against 14/15 year olds. Advantage!
You have that going on right now. The league’s MVP, Brent Sam, will be 20 in April.
That’s how young you are. Players played to that age in college by going to Form 6 or repeating Form Five. Latapy would have been a dwarf back then. College players back then played in the first division league against grown men. Latas played when it was colleges league only and players looked undernourished. That’s why when college players came out after that period they found it difficult to make the transition to first division football. You need to stop.

I am a Trinidad and Tobago football fan, and I have come to you seeking information on Russell Latapy, who won the Superliga with you in 94/95 and 95/96 and also played in the Champions League at the time.
In case you may not know, Latapy is considered one of TNT’s all time legends, and I am working on collecting information for a documentary on his career.
Anything that anyone can tell me about his role, position, relationship with the coach/other players with whom he played, output, impression that Porto fans had of him, and especially any links or directions as to how to obtain video footage of him at the time would be greatly appreciated.

He was a decent player for Porto but had trouble cracking the starting lineup. I remember seeing him play a few times but don’t recall any special moment that he gave Porto. You might want to research his time with Academica where he started his career in Portugal and that’s where he was noticed.

I saw all of them and Latas don’t even come close. In fact Latas play the style of football Trinis have always loved. We like to look pretty but end up losing.
I think DeLeon is the best ever. Vision, technique, shot, work rate, heading, dribbling strength , my question DeLeon is ahead of all. The At. Benedicts team at that time was the best ever.

Latapy was a pretty loser? I’d admit that I have seen very few footage of the players before the 1980s. From what I saw to be honest, Warren Archibald is the one who really made me sit up straight.
But that is just from I saw. I saw Latapy play for Porto against Sampdoria and Inter in European competition. Sampdoria had Platt and Mancini. Inter had Paul Ince and I think Djorkaeff. Each time, Latapy more than held his own.
Latapy was a rare talent. I can’t say if he was better. But I wouldn’t be so dismissive of him.
Let me tell you all something. Don’t ever put Russell Latapy’s name in a discussion about Cummings, DeLeon and Archibald. He does not belong in that company. Anyone making that argument never saw that trio play or experienced the high quality of college soccer at that time.
SSFL, Player of the Year should have been awarded to Isaiah Hudson of Naparima College, he top scored and his team won everything. Wonder what criteria was used to award Sam whose team placed 10th.

By the way, I think it is crazy that Quinn Rodney from Shiva Boys HC didn’t make that All-Star team. He is one of the most dynamic players in the entire competition.
And if I were to recommend a signing, if Rodney isn’t the first player on my list then he would definitely be in the top three.

These types of awards and recognition would hold more weight if we knew the criteria involved and who actually makes the selection. For example, Leroy De Leon is chosen as the best ever player over the last 50 years, but why? They should at least have some kind of write up about what he did, when he did it, the impact he had and so on. At least the list of coaches was accompanied by the number of titles they won. The players by decade should be broken down by position so wider recognition can be given.

Sherdon Ifm Pierre, look back at that list of the 1990s again. Kevin Jeffrey was a menace in the SSFL for sure… I remember that squad with him and Loobie. But that 1990s list was mean.
