SSFL 26: Signal Hill held by St Anthony’s; CIC, “Naps” and Benedict’s win; Hillview thump Trinity

Signal Hill Secondary stuttered in Westmoorings today in the only surprise of the round, as the favourites generally did the business in Round 11 of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) SporTT Premiership Division.

Away to St Anthony’s College, Signal Hill trailed to an early Karim Millington goal—only to be gifted a way back in the match, as a wild miskick by goalkeeper Necose Moore presented captain J’meke Watkins with his easiest finish of the season in the 53rd minute.

Seven minutes later, Signal Hill attacking midfielder Jediael Marcelle rose unchallenged to head home from a right side Kyen Anderson cross, and it looked like the Tobagonians had completed the turnaround.

It’s not for nothing that the “Westmoorings Tigers” came into today’s affair on a two-game winning streak, though. And, in the final minute of regulation time, left back Malique Marshall brought the hosts level 2-2 with a speculative effort from distance that Signal Hill goalkeeper Kaleb Romeo misjudged.

Things were tense at Queen’s Royal College grounds too, where Malick Secondary led Naparima College 2-1, midway in the second half, after a double from Keisean Spence inside of three minutes.

It was Spence’s seventh and eighth goals of the season, which took him amongst the top five goal scorers this term.

Adasa Richardson rescued the defending champs though, as he completed his third hattrick of the season—after trebles against Trinity College (Moka) and Speyside Secondary respectively—to pinch a 3-2 result for “Naps”.

Naparima climbed two spots to third, while Signal Hill slipped to fifth. Naps trail leaders St Mary’s College by five points, but the former outfit have a game in hand.

Nothing if not steady, the undefeated St Mary’s kept their foot on the pedal today with a 2-0 win over Trinity College East at Serpentine Road in St Clair. Forward Jaedon Thomas got a team high seventh goal this season in the 82nd minute, as the “Saints” marched on.

TCE, meanwhile, remain bottom of the standings with five points from 10 games.

There was no movement in the relegation zone today, as Mucurapo West Secondary, Trinity College (Moka) and St Augustine Secondary all lost to Fatima College, Hillview College and Queen’s Royal College respectively.

Fatima captain Jahaem “Yellows” Bailey got a double in the Mucurapo Road derby, to remain atop the scoring charts with 16 items—two more than second placed Richardson.

And, on El Dorado Road, new Hillview coach Jerwyn Balthazar got his first points at the helm in a lopsided 6-2 triumph over Trinity, with forward Cristiano Hinds netting three penalties in his four-goal salvo.

The score was 1-1 in the 20th minute, but—as they showed on the weekend, when they threw away a three-goal lead to fall 5-3 at home against Arima North Secondary—the current Trinity College outfit can crumble quickly when things are not going this way.

Hinds, incidentally, now has 10 goals this season for the newly promoted team.

In Tobago, St Benedict’s College got what they went for—three points. But it was not quite so straightforward.

Forward Kanye Glasgow put Benedict’s ahead in the fifth minute, with his seventh goal of the season. But the visitors rarely looked like extending their lead and had to be grateful to goalkeeper Naftali Charles, who saved a Riquelme Phillips penalty kick to help hold off Speyside.

Charles was sent off, later in the contest, for handling the ball outside of his area, as the “La Romaine Lions” finished with 10 players. But St Benedict’s held on to the result.

St Benedict’s play an in-form Presentation College (San Fernando) next, at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella on Saturday—in what promises to be the game of the round.

But, according to which version of seventh placed Arima North take to the field on Saturday, it could lead to an interesting affair against St Mary’s College at the Arima Velodrome too.
