T&T U15 Girls edged 1-0 by Dominican Republic in Concacaf semis

The Trinidad and Tobago Girls National Under-15 team missed out on a place in the Concacaf Championship League B finals today, after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Dominican Republic at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

A late Kaylee Lainez freekick decided the outcome of the match, just minutes after Trinidad and Tobago defender Hackeemar Goodridge forced a superb save from the opposite goalkeeper with a set piece of her own.

The Dominican Republic will now face Honduras in the League B final on Sunday while Trinidad and Tobago will contest Guatemala for a third-place finish.

Veteran coach Marlon Charles said he could not ask for any more from the Trinidad and Tobago team.

“I am so proud; there are no words right now,” said the Trinidad and Tobago coach, in his post-match reaction. “[…] I was proud with the [performance of the] whole team—when we have the ball and when we don’t have the ball.”

The Trinidad and Tobago High Performance team, the country’s reserve team, also tasted defeat today with a 1-0 loss to the Cayman Islands in a playoff.

High Performance coordinator Paul Decle stressed the importance of the exposure to the team, which closed the competition with two narrow defeats, a win and a draw.

“Most importantly, getting to have 36 players exposed is a big bonus for our High Performance programme,” said Decle. “It is going to encourage these girls to want to stay in the game and continue playing and striving to play for our national teams going forward.”

The Trinidad and Tobago Boys National Under-14 team will get their first taste of international on home soil in August as well in the CFU Boys’ Under-14 Challenge Series, which kicks off on Saturday 17 August.

The host team are based in Tobago in Group A and will face Aruba, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Martinique and Jamaica over the course of five days.
