I can advance NC’s work! Wharfe joins TTFA presidential race

Trinidad and Tobago Premier Football League (TTPFL) CEO Colin Wharfe has confirmed his interest in running for the post of Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president.

Wharfe, who was hired by the Robert Hadad-led Normalisation Committee last year to run the TTPFL, is the third person to formally express interest in the vacant position, thus far.

He joins Veteran Footballers Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago (VFFOTT) president Selby Browne, Eastern Football Association (EFATT) president Kieron Edwards and Southern Football Association (SFA) president Denis Latiff, who also indicated their intention to run for the job.

Wharfe, in a media release, claimed to have “a long history of participation in local football”. If so, it was under the radar—before Latiff hired him as part of the administrative staff for the Tiger Tanks Under-20 competition in 2022, followed by his more high-profile post with the TTPFL.

He promised to “advance the work” done by the Fifa-appointed Normalisation Committee.

“I feel compelled to seize the opportunity to lead an expanded team which will propel Trinidad and Tobago football,” stated Wharfe. “I fervently believe that football can be a driver of societal engagement and national transformation, at a time when multi-faceted approaches are needed.

“[…] I possess the skills to advance the work that has already begun and of which I have been a part, so I decided to run for the post.”

The TTFA elections will be held on Saturday 13 April while candidates have until Wednesday 28 February to confirm their nine-member slates.

Candidates must be proposed by at least five members to run for office. The TTFA membership comprises 32 members at present with 57 delegates between them. (For instance, 18 TTPFL clubs have 36 votes.)
