Ex-Pres captain triumphant after police talk, but shooting probe still in limbo

The former Presentation College (San Fernando) football standout identified in a shooting case walked in uninvited at the La Brea Police Station today with his attorney, Taradath Singh, to see if he was a wanted man—in connection with the shooting of 21-year-old woman Sapphire David.

He walked out again, unrestrained and triumphant, within minutes.

A smoking gun…

“They told I’m not wanted and they’ll contact me if needed,” he told Wired868. “They said they are not the media, so don’t believe all the drama.”

The former national youth captain and his family and supporters are anxious to distance the talented footballer from shocking allegations that dogged him since David was shot in the chest on Saturday 30 December 2023.

The words “not wanted” are of immense comfort to the young man and his loved ones. However, the caveat “contact me if needed” carries weight too.

At present, a young woman is fighting for her life after being the victim of a savage crime. David underwent emergency surgery soon after the incident and is considered to be in stable but critical condition.

David saw her assailant and gave a name. However, police sources say that investigators want a formal statement—and perhaps a more detailed recount—before they take action.

For his part, the player insisted he was at his store in Couva at the time of the shooting and listed his mother and sister among his witnesses. He also claimed to have video evidence and several customers who were willing to confirm his whereabouts.

As he was driven home from the La Brea Station, the footballer, who has two senior international caps for Trinidad and Tobago, teased customers with another sale at his apparel store.

Someone shot David, though. If she recovers and talks, presumably the La Brea Police will get cracking then.

Sapphire David, 21, was shot in the chest on 30 December 2023 and is still believed to be in critical condition.

And, although the ex-Presentation captain is a free man and undeserving of any murderous accusations, police have not ruled anyone out as a potential suspect just yet.

  1. Perhaps too early to celebrate freedom, young fellah. This is Trinidad. ⁴
