Fatima College and Naparima College shared the spoils on Mucurapo Road today, after a see-saw contest in a meeting between two Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premiership Division heavyweights.
Fatima struck first through Tyler Edwards and probably created the better goal scoring chances. However, the hosts had to rely on a late goal by 14-year-old substitute Jiair Nanton to stave off defeat, as “Naps” struck twice after the break, through Arron Raymond and Adasa Richardson.

It might be a slightly bewildering sight to see Fatima and Naparima in eighth and ninth place in the standings, but they have 12 and 13 games left respectively. And their fates are far from sealed.
Both lost games in midweek. Naparima fell 2-1 to Signal Hill Secondary, after referee Keon Yorke awarded the Tobago school a controversial late penalty on their home ground.
In Fatima’s case, a 2-2 away draw against Presentation College (San Fernando) was followed by a 6-3 loss to newly promoted Hillview College on Mucurapo Road.
Bailey leads the league with seven goals, although he failed to score for the first time this season against “Naps”.

Both schools needed to avoid successive defeats, then, and a tie at least served that purpose.
Elsewhere in the league, Speyside Secondary slipped from third to sixth spot after their second lopsided defeat in four days, as they fell 7-2 to St Mary’s College in Tobago.
Fourteen-year-old forward Zaa’van Joseph and midfielder Jalen Hislop, nephew of World Cup 2006 hero Shaka Hislop, both notched doubles for the “Saints”.
For Speyside, the slide has been traumatic as they count the value of an injury to main goalkeeper Elijah Richards. Today’s crushing loss in east Tobago comes on the heels of an 8-0 defeat to Arima North Secondary in La Horquetta.
Arima North did not have their finishing boots in Trincity today, though, as the Dial Dynamos laboured to a 3-2 win over Trinity College East—thanks to a late penalty by attacking midfielder Jaeden Samuel.

Arima North and St Mary’s College, after four rounds, are already the only teams remaining with 100% records. Both of their credentials will be sorely tested this week, as the Saints travel to Naparima in midweek while the Dial Dynamos host St Benedict’s College.
St Benedict’s outgunned St Anthony’s College 4-2 in Westmoorings today, with Orande Parris registering a hattrick, to move to nine points from four rounds, alongside Signal Hill and Hillview.
Hillview dispatched Mucurapo West Secondary 4-1 in Tunapuna, with Cristiano Hinds netting a double, while Signal Hill thumped Malick Secondary 4-2 in St Clair to keep their momentum.

At the other end of the table, Trinity College (Moka) and St Augustine Secondary pulled out of the relegation places with wins over Queen’s Royal College (QRC) and San Juan North Secondary respectively.
Trinity College followed up on their midweek triumph over San Juan North with a 4-0 victory against QRC, which moved them up six places to seventh in the standings.
Their nightmarish 7-0 opening day defeat to Naparima might feel like a distant memory now. Attacker Andre Constantine has scored in two successive games for Trinity.

And on Warren Street, St Augustine got their first win of the season in a 5-3 slug out with eastern rivals, San Juan North.
Israel Holder grabbed a treble for the “Green Machine”. Gabriel Britto has scored three times this season for San Juan North, but all three came in losing efforts.
San Juan North hosts QRC on Wednesday, in a contest that already looks ominous for the loser.

The former team is out of the relegation places by only goal difference, while the latter—with one goal from four matches—need a revival. Quickly!
