Connection opens Pro League account with Central draw

Defending Digicel Pro League champions DIRECTV W Connection collected its first point of the season in a rescheduled fixture last night but the “Savonetta Boys” remain winless after three competitive 2014/15 fixtures.

Connection ran into Couva rival, Central FC, at the Ato Boldon Stadium yesterday but neither outfit did enough to snatch a win as they played to a 1-1 draw. Both goals came from the penalty spot.

Kurt Frederick put Connection ahead in the 40th minute as he knocked home a loose ball after Central custodian Jan-Michael Williams saved the initial penalty from Hashim Arcia.

Referee Neal Brizan awarded the penalty after a perceived foul by Central sweeper Marvin Oliver on Arcia.

It was Connection’s first goal of the season after the Savonetta Boys lost its first League match 1-0 to North East Stars and then was eliminated from the First Citizens Cup with a 2-0 defeat to San Juan Jabloteh.

Five minutes before the final whistle, the “Couva Sharks” denied Connection its maiden win of this competition as Ataulla Guerra dusted himself off, after being tripped in the opposing area, and levelled things up from the penalty spot.

After three matches, Central leads the Pro League standings with seven points from two wins and a draw. However, Defence Force and Jabloteh can both catch them based on games in hand.
