Soca Warriors travel to Jamaica for two February friendlies, as Yorke and McClaren square off

The Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Senior Team will play two friendlies away to Jamaica on 6 and 9 February, as part of both nations’ preparation for the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup Preliminary qualifying round in March.

Trinidad and Tobago have a home-and-away match up against Cuba in the Gold Cup prelims while Jamaica are drawn with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Concacaf has not confirmed the date for those qualifiers, although they are likely to fall within the Fifa international match window of 17 to 25 March.

The friendly clash between the Soca Warriors and the Reggae Boyz falls outside the Fifa window and teams are not obligated to release players for the games, which usually rules out Europe-based players as well as Major League Soccer (MLS) players.

For Trinidad and Tobago head coach Dwight Yorke, it will be his second excursion with the Warriors after a trip to Saudi Arabia last month—also outside the Fifa match window—which ended in a 3-1 friendly defeat.

Jamaica are led by English coach Steve McClaren, who left his job as assistant to then Manchester United head coach Erik Ten Hag for the Caribbean post last July.

Incidentally, McClaren and Yorke crossed paths at Manchester United in 1999. McClaren joined the club as an assistant to manager Alex Ferguson earlier that year, while Yorke was a transfer record signing from Aston Villa in August 1998.

Together, they savoured England Premier Division and FA Cup titles.

McClaren has so far led Jamaica into six games: all competitive matches. There were two wins (away to Honduras and Nicaragua), two draws (at home against Cuba and Honduras) and home and away losses against the United States.

The Reggae Boyz are yet to win a match on home soil under McClaren. Yorke would try to ensure that does not happen under his watch.

Trinidad and Tobago face Jamaica on Monday 6 February at the Montego Bay Sports Complex from 8.30pm TT time, while they square off again on Thursday 9 February at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in Kingston from 9pm TT time.
