SSFL 25: Wright rubs San Juan North wrong, as Signal Hill snatch late draw

Signal Hill Secondary salvaged a last gasp draw at Bourg Mulatresse this evening to keep their 2025 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division hopes alive, as they drew 1-1 with San Juan North Secondary.

San Juan North are 13th on the 16-team table and only goal difference separated them from relegation-threated St Augustine Secondary at kick off.

However, coach Jerry Moe’s troops led for more than two-thirds of the game—thanks to an early free kick from defender Malique Marrast.

A win would have taken the “San Juan Kings” to 12th spot and a tad more security. But Immanuel Wright dashed aside such dreams in stoppage time, in the cruellest circumstances for the hosts.

Fifteen-year-old San Juan North goalkeeper Elijah Lawrence saved a late penalty kick from Wright, but was powerless to stop the Signal Hill winger from converting to rebound.

It ensured the Tobago school did not return home empty-handed.

At present, Signal Hill are in 10th place, but they have seven games in hand—including one against second placed Naparima College.

If Signal Hill win all seven games, they will become the first secondary school to even the title in the Premier Division format. Should they lose to Naparima and the southern outfit also defeats St Mary’s College, Naps will be champions for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

If Signal Hill and Naps draw, St Benedict’s College will win the Premier Division title for only the second time, should they triumph in their closing fixture away to Trinity College East.

Signal Hill have barely 48 hours rest before they face St Mary’s College in Tobago on Thursday evening, while Scarborough Secondary and San Juan are both in action—against Trinity East and Trinity College (Moka) respectively—later this week.
