Saturday 13 February 2016 would go down in Trinidad and Tobago media history. Or at least it should.
Finally, the One Caribbean Media (OCM) group, which includes the Trinidad Express newspaper and TV6, has chanced across an image deemed so graphic that it could not, in good conscience, share it with viewers.

It was not a decapitated head found in Upper Duncan Street, Port of Spain, the lifeless body of drowned former National Security Minister Martin Joseph, video footage of former West Indies cricketer Runako Morton at the scene of his tragic accident or the actual broadcast of the gang rape of a 13 year old girl.
All those clips got the green light from the OCM censors.
But writer Monique Roffey baring her backside—supposedly with only a thong for company—in protest of the PNM’s misogynistic and moronic mayor and treasurer, Raymond Tim Kee?
Now that, according to the Express censors, just crosses the line for good taste!
Just to be clear: The sight of a thong holding down for dear life to a gyrating bumper during an alcohol-laced on Carnival Monday or Tuesday street party? The more the merrier!

A thong being used, three days later, to make a political statement against sexism and violence against women? Somebody cover that arse please!
To say that Trinidad and Tobago has an unusual sense of morality is to put it mildly.
This, after all, is a country that would promote Jack Warner as the feature speaker at a function for school teachers—even while he is on the Interpol’s wanted list—and argue that he has not been convicted yet. But then cheer when police gun down a suspect without bothering to detain him for trial.
And where Tim Kee, with no discernible evidence, can suggest that Japanese pannist Asami Nagakiya might have been at fault in her own death by strangulation and not see what the fuss is about.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, according to the Trinidad Guardian, replied that the Mayor may have misspoke. Keithos did not say: “he was advised.” But he might as well.

We have seen this show before with lenient leaders happy to look the other way as their merry men and women reap havoc.
But then Rowley has always loved women in the classic, old school way. Happy, according to Anika Gumbs, to act as bodyguard and chase honey bees; but unconvinced by the need for a Ministry of Gender Affairs.
Slowly, Trinidad and Tobago is recognising a trend with the new gang at the helm.
Port of Spain councillor and attorney, Farai Hove Masaisai, took to his official Facebook page to produce a stunning support for his Mayor, which we repost verbatim:
“All these fly by night, opportunist women’s groups… Where were they when shopping Toppin was accusing Dr Rowley’s Mother of being raped by his father… Where were these same so called women’s groups when His Worship the Mayor teamed up with the United Nations to make the City of Port of Spain the Standard bearer against Domestic Violence against women…

“I’ll tell you where they were #Convientlysilent. Everyone wants a cause but please make your cause something sustainable, call on the authorities find the perpetrator of the haneous act, educate young women about the dangers of excessive alcohol and dressing only in underwear cause like it or not there are some sick people out there who will pray on the vulnerable.#RaymondTimKee (sic)”
It is hard to know if to start with Masaisai’s post with a spell check or fact check. Or if it is worth starting on this at all. Forget Zika, stupidity might get us first in these parts!
Suffice to say that when members of the ruling party are capable of making Opposition Senator Wayne Sturge appear classy—or, at least, like an accomplished writer—it might be time the PNM took a long, hard look at itself.
The PNM women’s groups, incidentally, are silent. Just like the UNC groups were mum after Vernella Toppin-Alleyne’s shocking molestation of the Rowley family.
Further evidence that a political party’s women arm is about as independent from the central body as Movie Towne (Chaguanas) is from Movie Towne (Port of Spain).

Or maybe the PNM ladies are merely trying to “ensure that they are not abused” by the party’s macho headmasters.
Don’t blush, babies!
Mr Live Wire has been advised against giving life to the motley crew contingent of religious leaders that have supported Tim Kee.
But asking a satirist to ignore Sat Maharaj is like asking a child to skip Christmas.
We point to the Maha Sabha Secretary General’s defence of then Tourism Minister Chandresh Sharma, after he literally flattened his mistress, Sacha Singh, in Grand Bazaar.
“Chandresh is about twice the age of that woman,” said Maharaj, who brushed aside calls for his dismissal, “she must have known what she was getting into, I leave that for the court and the police to investigate…”

Ahhh, Sat, you had me at: “she must have known what she was getting into…”
Who said Muslims—Tim Kee is a practising Muslim—and Hindus cannot sing from the same hymn book?
Maharaj changed his tune once then prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar made Sharma walk the plank.
“It is not right for any man to behave in that manner—a married man,” Maharaj told the Trinidad Guardian. “It is not right, especially as you are having an affair with a person who is young as your oldest child.”
Maharaj’s morals, like those of many of his compatriots in and outside the religious sphere, are happy to be dictated to by power.
And the PNM’s view to the offended “feminists” appears to be: “She could bark at my dog because I will ignore she kyat.”

None of that explains the OCM’s sudden prudish response to Roffey’s rear end and why her bumper was considered too real for viewers.
And why, in so doing, Express chose to scrap its longstanding nonsensical defence of “public interest” for showing mutilated bodies and rape footage.
What was it about Roffey’s rump that made Express editor-in-chief Omatie Lyder blush?
Mr Live Wire believes Roffey now has a civic duty to show up at the site of murders and tragic accidents and bear her thong, just as photographers prepare to snap those disgraceful images that mortify the family and loved ones of the deceased.
Monique’s bam bam, which Express blurred from the sight of normal men like the face of the Prophet Muhammad, can yet save the decency of our country.

Fight fire with fire and batter BS with a bamsee. Only in sweet Trinidad and Tobago.
Editor’s Note: Port of Spain mayor Raymond Tim Kee offered to resign his post on the afternoon of Saturday February 13 while Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said that, upon review of Tim Kee’s statement, he deemed it totally unacceptable.
(Office of the Mayor of Port of Spain)
I have noted the continued outrage and hurt over statements attributed to me. I deeply regret the consequences of these statements, and I apologise unreservedly to those who have been affected. I consider the reaction has been sufficient to cause damage to the Office of the Mayor of Port of Spain, which any holder of this office should be concerned to protect at all costs.
It is in these circumstances, why I intend to call an emergency meeting of Council, and tender my resignation as Mayor, and as an Alderman.
It is important for me to point out as a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, a man and a father, that I reiterate my unreserved respect for women, and in fact for all people, regardless of their race, gender or religion.
It is hoped that with this decision, the Office of the Mayor is now protected, my unreserved apology accepted by my fellow citizens, and that the focus can now be placed fully on solving the murder of a visitor to our shores.
Raymond Tim Kee,
Mayor

Mr. Live Wire is an avid news reader who translates media reports for persons who can handle the truth. And satire. Unlike Jack Nicholson, he rarely yells.
Why Neil? He hasn’t resigned anyway. Not yet. We’ve seen this before by Blatter right Keith?
..Exactly..
Stall for time while trying to shore up your position and see if you are strong enough to ride it out…
I am protesting the mayor’s resignation BIG TIME!!!!!
Where is the bottom!?
lololl
Not at all. The vehemence was a little scary, TBH. The police came over and asked us to wrap up because they were getting rowdy.
That’s really vile Calisa and Nicole. And so ironic. And of course they won’t see the irony. Sad.
Keeping it real for all the little ladies out there. Don’t say I never gave you nottin 🙂 http://bust.com/feminism/12720-how-not-to-get-raped-satirical-infographic.html
Renee Cummings shared this wonderfully informative piece for how now to get raped. I think women should read this like the Bible! 🙂
http://bust.com/feminism/12720-how-not-to-get-raped-satirical-infographic.html
My wall was no different. Mix of women and men standing up to talk about the difference in raising girls and boys, but also quite a bit of vile.
They were aggressive before the protest wrapped up and they were aggressive before it got started. The first girl to show up in costume got an earful.
A friend of mine shared audio of one of them referring to Iran and 100 lashes in regards to her.
Lasana Liburd From a distance. General shouted nonsense at all of us. Media was still there.
You mean you all were verbally abused after the protest Nicole? The media had left?
When we left Woodford Sq, abuse was hurled at us. Who should go home and take horn, who should be beaten.
My inbox is full of stories from women who experience fear, assault and abuse – many stories are childhood stories, previously never told.
The Mayor’s comments sparked an outrage on both sides of a divide.
What was ugly before is likely to get uglier in the short term.
It is very important to keep the conversation going.
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cedriann Martin Chin-Asiong no doubt.
I suspect the international stories had something to do with it
it was a multi-pronged attack, inside and outside the country.
and some stirring from you and the UN and Aunt Jezebel and God know who else, Oshun and Tillah Willah and hundreds of women outside City hall. The man really had to go.
Hahahaha Lasana, three cheers for Monique!
With a bit of prodding and the wave of a magic bamsee… 🙂
Augurs well for the future of our beloved country when a public office holder does the right thing.
Lasana Liburd, Im a but shocked and overwhelmed!!
The Mayor’s statements were unfortunate but that mindset is pervasive across our society. A conversation was started, and I hope it will continue.
fucking helllll
hooray
I just sawwww xxxxx
He could stay their treasurer as long as they want him yes.
..LOL..
By chance…we cud make a bacchanal and get him to resign as PNM treasurer?
..Chabeth. he ain’t resign yet…
Lol. Too excited to contain myself…
..You know what they say about the cup and the lip. I could easily see the council refusing the “intended” resignation. Cynical? Maybe. But..
That would be a hell of a thing!
It would be so funny if a rogue councillor wrote the letter and Tim Kee knows nothing of it…????
Well done, T&T on securing this resignation.
Don’t fall asleep now…
Ah want tuh hug somebody!
And a resignation to boot!
Vernal Damion Cadogan booooyyyyyyyyy
I don’t believe my eyes!
This is real?
Doh shit mih up yuh know!
https://www.facebook.com/bellies.supernedd/posts/10208540519938931?notif_t=notify_me
..Believe it when the resignation is real. In any event, enough of this. I hope the pressure is maintained on the authorities to adress ALL homicides and femicides with urgency..
Nicole, now THAT is an apology!
I agree with most of the above, not all.
I arxin myself how the ass.
How the ass can you on one hand support Aria night club for not extending their lady’s night offer to a woman because she was dressed too conservatively (“like ah man”) while on the other condemn mayor Tim Key for suggesting that Tuesday night’s murder victim caused her own murder because she was dressed and behaved too sexy?
He’s going to resign!!!!
Has he signed the letter?
Wait wait wait wait wait.
All yuh eh see Melina Hutchinson of “bash the dress like ah man Aria patron” fame criticizing Tim Key for his slut shaming of the murdered Japanese woman who was strangled?
Haven’t seen her in a while. She will see red for that Jack Warner reference for sure. Don’t touch her Jack!
Nicole leh mih tag you and all.
I tort I seeing things.
Lol. Ok
I hear there are lots of folks who switched sides for this one.
I think the point was very effectively made and will remain one of the most iconic images of the year or even the decade.I am only disappointed that I never had such interesting demonstrators when I served at the London High Commission.I received many persons and their petitions and even when I did not share their views I respected their right to have a contrary position and always admired their passion.Demonstrating is an important and necessary part of the democratic process and the fact that it is alive and well was the one encouraging thing to have come out of this tragic situation.
Idk. Maybe it’s not that deep. Maybe after two days of Tim Kee, express just decided it had shown enough ass for the week. If she’d had shown some boobies… maybe there’d have been no censorship. 😉
Golden!
Hahaha yuh good
‘It is hard to know if to start with Masaisai’s post with a spell check or fact check’ … cannot stop laughing…is that this dude’s real name btw?
I wondered the same thing. But it is. Imagine we thought rat infestation was the biggest problem the city of Port of Spain had.
I just cannot ….
I have already sent word to Monique that she can no longer hide that bumper under a bushel. With great power comes great responsibility.
Verily she hath the power to make newspaper editors mimic scruples.
Typical Third World, small island mentality
Yuh trying not tuh say “country bookie”?
Hear nah!!!!! I nearly get a stroke in mih finger not to type it!!!
I know, the struggle is real.
Lasana Liburd, you know OCM have paid me a lil chunk of cash for my cute little brain, so dey gotta hide my backside, dey is feeling modest and protective, maybe. They have invested in it, I guess.
Hahaha. Touche.
fly by night women’s opportunist groups, heh.
Right now about 90 percent of T&T are honorary feminists at the moment, thanks to Tim Kee.
well, it takes a special kind of sexist asshole to mobilise the entire female population of a small country, eh, but he did it.
What ENTIRE female population. Waste of time Womantra and their issues. Big fat watery STEUPS
The force is strong with this one. I’ve been sparring with him for about two years and was glad to finally see him voted out of football last November.
Little did I know the damage he could still inflict.
how do we get rid of him? What do I need to do?
There is nothing you can’t do with the right apparel Monique! Lol. Seriously, Rowley hasn’t responded to any complaints about his gang so far.
Everything met with a stone face and passive aggressive stance. Who knows what works for now.
Rowley can’t simply fire a mayor. But he could engineer a coup if he so desired.
But, at the least, they should start by unequivocally saying the Mayor was absolutely wrong… Not that he MAY have misspoke.
tomorrow is Valentines day. V day. Vulgar day. More protests needed me feel. Sit ins. Die ins, mass ass bearing. naked tongue kiss ins.
at City hall. orgies and love bombings. etc etc.
They need to ditch Ian Alleyne and give you your own TV crew! 🙂
you and me, eh?
Haha. With that itinerary? Sure!
His Worship. Come on, thats the title of our show.
just think of me as Amy Winehouse crossed with Ruby Wax and a little Morticia Adams thrown in. I’m irresistable to politicians.
Monique’s mystical bamsee has shown up Trinidad Express in my books.
You think it’s readers have grasped the irony?
You even think it’s readers are generally capable of grasping advanced concepts such as irony!
Surely people looked at that blurred image and thought: Wait, something’s not right… 🙂
Like when Custer see all dem teepee in the distance and say “wait, something ain’t right” before attacking them with his insufficient cavalry?
Hahahaha… More like when Neo saw two black cats in Matrix and said “Deja vu.”
dam dat bam bam Monique Roffey
Hear nah …. fuh real
We’re a people full of hypocritical inconsistencies …. and we cool with that!
