City FC edged previously unbeaten FC Ginga 1-0 in Sunday’s marquee match-up of the Central Zone U-17 division at Frederick Settlement to keep alive their chances of qualifying for the knockout round of the 2025 Republic Bank National Youth Football League (RBNYFL).
Kenai Richardson’ side-foot finish was enough to end FC Ginga’s five-match winning streak and keep City in the playoff race along with Beatnix SC.

Beatnix now lead the division on goal difference after a comprehensive 5-0 win over FC Tigers, with FC Ginga pushed down to second place.
All three teams still have a shot at the two knockout-round places. Beatnix SC play their final preliminary round match on Wednesday against Gasparillo Youths, a team it has struggled to beat in the past.
Elsewhere in the Central U-17 Division, Crown Trace FC overwhelmed Premier Sports Club 3-1, while Gasparillo Youths and Kamillionare FC were inactive on Sunday.
When City FC players took the field at the Ancil Elcock Recreation Ground in Frederick Settlement, they understood that a loss would end their season.

The conditions were far from optimum. A heavy crosswind rendered long passes forward wildly inaccurate, and the hard, uneven surface may have even tested Diego Maradona’s sublime first touch.
High-flying FC Ginga came in as the darlings of the division with five straight wins, and only one goal conceded in 400 minutes of play.
City FC had taken only one point from their last two games after winning their first three matches and outscoring their opponents 8-1.
Both teams had problems in the striking department, with Ginga notching only eight goals in their five games, while City produced one more than their rivals.

Both teams used similar 4-3-3 formations, emphasised possession football, and pressed fiercely when they did not have the ball while building their attacks from deep.
It was thus inevitable they would cancel each other out and set in motion an attritional battle with strikers fed on scraps.
After Michael J Mohammed’s whistle set the contest going, City settled faster, with their front three, Nanton, Jereem Mondezie, and Nadeem Grant, snapping at the heels of the Ginga backline.
Ginga defenders Elijah Edwards and Isaiah Coa had a torrid time getting the ball out to their midfielders to create chances for a front three that included talented winger Elijah Diaz.

However, both defences held firm in the first 20 minutes, with only Nanton slicing through to have a shot on goal. The talented City FC winger cut inside from the right to beat his defender but scuffed a left-footed drive that made it easy for the keeper to save.
Nanton, who represented Trinidad and Tobago at the 2024 CFU Boys’ U-14 Challenge Series, worried Ginga throughout the match with his speed and close ball control.
After the water break, hostilities resumed with more open play, and chances soon emerged for the hungry front three of both teams.

Ginga FC’s Diaz made his luck, channelling his inner Dimitar Berbatov to deliciously glide past a defender on the bye-line before shooting wide. Nanton then persuaded his marker to go the wrong way, but his eventual shot was gobbled up by Ginga goalkeeper Mark Belfon, who started ahead of Orlian Carrion Herrera.
The half ended with FC Ginga producing some delightful interplay that should have given them the lead going into the break.
Three quickfire passes carved open the City FC defence and brought the ball to the feet of Kafense McKell, but the tall striker could only stab his snap-shot wide of the upright.

While a gritty first half ended goalless, the second half started brightly. City FC, now playing with the wind to their backs, got a free kick in their own half.
The free kick, which was directed straight at the goal, pinballed off several bodies before falling nicely to defender Kenai Richardson.
The former national U-14 player needed no second invitation and side-footed the ball past Belfon into the Ginga net.

It was only the second goal conceded by the Tunapuna-based team, with the other item scored by Premier SC player Meshach Webb in February.
Ginga were rattled and were close to going down 2-0 a few minutes later from a similar long-range freekick. Again, City FC pumped the ball straight at goal, only this time a Ginga defender was there to boot it off the line.
Roused into action by the goal, Ginga galvanised their offence around the talents of Kymani Hazel, who went close twice, while fellow forward Elisha Neils shot over.

However, they still trailed 1-0 when the water break was called in the second half.
Ginga had Herrera in goal when they resumed, although the goalkeeper unwittingly handed City their best chance of the second half.
Attempting to volley the ball downfield, he ventured outside of his area with the ball in hand, and referee Mohammed gave City FC the free kick. Richardson hit a pile driver that banged into the wall, and Ginga recovered to clear their lines.

It was the last clear-cut chance of the match, and when the whistle sounded, it was the City fans who were celebrating a hard-fought win and a possible stay of execution.
“It was a tough loss,” FC Ginga head coach Stefon Pierre said. “Football is played on the day. The better team wanted it today, and so it goes.
“[…] It all came down to mentality. Both teams had good showings, both teams fought the game. They came out with the better head.”

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
“It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but one thing I told the boys was that they found a way to win, and it shows their character and their personalities,” said victorious coach Myles Yorke said. “I am really proud of their performance and also their resilience on the field.”
City’s 1-0 win still leaves them with a chance to make it to the playoffs, but they know Beatnix SC and FC Ginga could still shut them out with wins in their final matches.
“It gives us a chance next week—we can only take care of what we have in front of us, and today, we took care of business,” said Yorke. “Hopefully, next week it goes in our favour.”

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
“We are still in the running. It is not a detrimental loss, so that we cannot go forward. It comes down to winning the next game,” said Pierre. “Winning the next game will see us through.”
Ginga play Crown Trace FC in their final game, while City will take on Kamillionare FC, who is currently bottom of the table.
“We prepare for every game the same, so we always prepare the next game for the best team in the league,” said Yorke. “It does not matter if they are a weaker team or a stronger team—we always prepare the same. I give respect to all teams.”

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
“We have to try to keep them motivated,” said Pierre. “We are disappointed with the result, but we have to still keep them motivated.”
With FC Ginga suffering their first defeat of the season, the result buoyed second-placed Beatnix, who played struggling FC Tigers in Sunday’s second game at Frederick Settlement.
Beatnix’s only defeat for the season was a 2-0 loss to Ginga, with the Five Rivers-based team scoring a division-high 13 goals in their other four games to stay near to the top of the table.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
FC Tigers, coached by Alejandro Acosta, recorded their only win against Kamillionare FC while shipping 15 goals in their five games.
Before the contest began, Beatnix coach Quinlan O’Brien said he hoped for a possible 2-0 lead at the end of the first half. His expectations were exceeded within four minutes as Beatnix hammered three goals past a reworked FC Tigers defense.
With FC Tigers in seventh place in the table and qualification for the knockout round out of the picture, Acosta used the opportunity to blood players who had not had much playing time in the tournament.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
Without the benefit of much on-field time, the young defenders were singing from different hymn sheets, and an on-song Beatnix attack was on perfect pitch.
The carnage started in the opening minute of the game when Tigers goalkeeper Tyrese Francis failed to get his fingers behind a Chad Nicholas free-kick. The ball squirmed through his fingers and nestled into the back of the net.
A minute later, Francis was again taking the ball out of his net, but this time, he was powerless to stop Jaylon Hinds from firing in his fourth goal of the campaign.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
Just before the four-minute mark, Beatnix’s top scorer, Jahmarley Ellis, rounded Francis and slotted in to make it 3-0 and record his sixth strike for the season.
Mikai Boney then broke his duck for 2025 with a thumping header from close range in the seventh minute.
Beatnix had put the game away with 73 minutes still to go and could afford to slip down a few gears and coast to victory. However, with O’Brien urging his charges to keep attacking, they struck once more.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
Ellis received the ball just outside the opposition and held off the defender at his back long enough to lay off to the fast-approaching Boney. And Boney took the ball in stride, caressing it between two defenders, before passing it into the net to make it 5-0.
The second half was not as one-sided, as Tigers steeled up their defence with left winger Aiden La Rode and midfielder Jason Gamaldo brought into the back four.
Beatnix still had chances though. Ellis fired over early in the second half and then headed wide just before the water break.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
Tigers goalkeeper Francis recovered from his nightmarish start to the game to pull off several diving saves to shut out Beatnix in the second half. His best save kept out a fiery Akelion Washington effort, before Kaleb Lewis cleared the ball off the line.
The first-half score became the final score as Beatnix ran out 5-0 winners and took the top spot in the Central Zone U-17 division, via goal difference—with a +13 goal difference, compared to Ginga’s +6.
“I wasn’t expecting it, but we play an aggressive type of football,” Beatnix coach O’Brien said. “[…] I told the guys before the game we have to do our work at our end if we want to go on top of the table. We came out here today, and we did that.”

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
FC Tigers Acosta was left to rue a poor start to the game, which he said was due to a change in strategy.
“The team is in the middle of a transitional period, and I tried a different strategy today to include some of the players who have not been getting a lot of playing time,” he said. “It did not work for us […] and we made the changes in the second half, and were able to stop the goals.”
Beatnix have three days to recover for a showdown with a difficult Gasparillo Youths team.

Photo: Nicholas Bhajan/ Wired868.
“We don’t have a good record against Gasparillo. So it is going to be a tough game. We are going to put our best foot forward,” said O’Brien. “I believe in the guys—I know they believe in themselves.
“Gasparillo [are] a hard team. I think we will come out with the victory. I know we will come out with the victory, but it will be a hard-fight victory.”
Beatnix could sew up their place in the knockout round with a victory on Wednesday, and the current three-horse race will become a straight-out duel between City and Ginga by the following weekend.
