Big Five 23: St Augustine, MMPHS start at home, as fixtures revealed

The 2023 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big Five will kick off on Friday 2 February, with Central Zone Championship Division winners Miracle Ministries Pentecostal High School (MMPHS) facing North Zone champs Blanchisseuse Secondary at Edinburgh 500.

East Division winners St Augustine Secondary also host South Zone champs Moruga Secondary, while Tobago Championship winners Signal Hill Secondary are on a bye.

All Big Five games kick off at 3.30pm. The competition starts almost four months late, due to a serious registration issue involving Miracle Ministries and Moruga.

The top three finishers in the Big Five qualify automatically for the 2024 SSFL Premier Division, where they will replace the relegated trio of Bishop’s High School, Chaguanas North Secondary and Pleasantville Secondary.

It will be Miracle Ministries’ second straight tilt at the Big Five competition, after they finished behind St Mary’s College, Arima North Secondary, Bishop’s High and Siparia West Secondary in 2022.

Moruga, won the Big Five crown in 2019, before being relegated in 2022. They now have a chance to return to the top flight.

St Augustine have been a regular fixture upstairs since the birth of the Premier Division in 2014 and would hope for a speedy return. And Blanchisseuse are seeking to put the north coast on the school football map with a historic trip to the top flight.

The 2024 Premier Division pack, so far, comprises: reigning champions Fatima College, Arima North Secondary, East Mucurapo Secondary, Malick Secondary, Naparima College, Presentation College (San Fernando), St Anthony’s College, St Benedict’s College, St Mary’s College, San Juan North Secondary, Speyside High School, and Trinity College East.
