Pro League round-up: ‘Army’ widen gap; Civic and Sando get vital wins

Defence Force FC stretched their lead atop the Pro League standings to nine points as they cruised to a 3-1 win over AC Port of Spain at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva yesterday.

Attacker Reon Moore scored in his fourth straight match for the Army/Coast Guard combination while there was a collector’s item for forward Brent Sam, who finally opened his account this season. Sam’s striker partner Adrian Welch got Defence Force’s third item while Shem Clauzel got a late consolation item for AC.

The ‘Teteron Boys’ have 29 points from 12 matches, which is nine points more than second place Terminix La Horquetta Rangers. Rangers host W Connection from 8pm at Phase 2, La Horquetta today in the closing game of a double header.

AC have 13 points from 14 matches and are now one place off the foot of the 11-team standings.

In deep south Trinidad, coach Dexter Cyrus’ men are in danger of getting nose bleeds as Point Fortin Civic climbed to fifth place with a 2-1 win over San Juan Jabloteh.

Civic nearly missed the 2019/20 season altogether as they failed to come to an agreement with fellow member clubs over registration fees and the league started without them.

Last to join the party, Civic have showed their value on the field of play and goals from Daniel Diaz and Justin Sadoo saw them reel off a second straight win yesterday to surge two spots to fifth.

For Jabloteh, who got a consolation item from adventurous left back Brandon Semper, the defeat continued their topsy turvy run of results. In recent weeks, the ‘San Juan Kings’ have defeated Police FC and Morvant Caledonia United from the top end of the table only to follow up with defeats against lowly Central FC and Tiger Tanks Club Sando.

Sando did enjoy their Valentine’s Day as well, as they thumped Morvant Caledonia 3-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium yesterday. Former National Under-20 Team midfielder Shaqkeem Joseph scored twice for Sando and is now the Pro League’s joint highest scorer, alongside Rangers captain Jamal Creighton, with eight items.

After this weekend’s matches, the Pro League goes on a break for Carnival and will resume service on 28 February 2020.

However, Defence Force are among six outfits who will take part in rescheduled games next Tuesday.
