Molino, Joevin and Mekeil fined for breaking camp; Hart confirms ‘isolated’ Warriors incident

Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team coach Stephen Hart confirmed today that three key Soca Warriors were fined for breaking team camp, just two days before their crucial Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier against Guatemala at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on 2 September.

The breach of discipline was made public, on Sunday 11 September, by I95.5fm radio show host Andre Baptiste, although the players were not named.

Hart also declined to name the misbehaving Warriors. However, Wired868 understands that the trio were United States-based professionals Kevin Molino, Joevin Jones and Mekeil Williams, who represent MLS clubs Orlando City, Seattle Sounders and Colorado Rapids respectively.

Contrary to the I95.5FM report, the three players were sanctioned for their behaviour in front of their teammates on 31 August. And the incident in question—the players snuck out to attend a boat party—actually happened three days before the Guatemala game and not 48 hours before.

Hart said he considered it to be an internal matter, which the technical staff dealt with immediately and firmly.

“Usually we deal with these sort of matters internally and we dealt with it as soon as we found out what happened,” Hart told Wired868, “and we dealt with it with a fairly hefty fine.”

The Warriors coach did not give the figure of the fine but it was substantial enough to have been in excess of the players’ bonus for advancing to the CONCACAF hex.

“In all honesty, we haven’t had to deal with a situation like this before,” said Hart. “We have had minor stuff with players breaking in-house rules. But not to the extent that they were out of the hotel.”

Hart pointed to Chile midfield star Arturo Vidal, who crashed his car while driving drunk just before the 2015 Copa America tournament. The Chilean FA allowed Vidal to remain with the team for the competition, which Chile won for the first time in their history.

“It is not something that is unique to Trinidad and Tobago,” said Hart. “Usually these things are dealt with in-house whenever possible.”

Ironically, Vidal was allegedly kicked out of the Chile squad on 5 September 2016, after he was again caught breaking camp.

Did Hart feel that the technical staff dealt with the infraction seriously enough? Did he consider more drastic action, just two days before a decisive World Cup qualifier?

The Warriors coach said his technical staff weighed up the nature of the incident, the fact that it was a first-time discrepancy and the possible effect of withdrawing the players’ services from the team, which may have put their teammates in a disadvantageous situation.

“It was a first time situation as far as I know,” said the Warriors coach, “and you have to ask yourself: Do you punish the whole team for a situation of three players?

“You are going into a crucial game and the players have broken team rules. We thought we dealt with it sufficiently in terms of it being a fine and [handling] it in-house.

“If this was habitual, they would probably have been sent home.”

Wired868 understands that Molino apologised to the coach personally for his behaviour. All three players started both games and Jones scored a double against Guatemala.

However, the Warriors were well below par in the two qualifiers. They played to a scrappy 2-2 draw with Guatemala on 2 September and then suffered a record defeat against the United States with a 4-0 loss in Jacksonville, Florida.

Did the breach of discipline—and possibly the technical staff’s response to it—affect team chemistry?

Hart claimed that, far from being divided or further demonstrating slipping standards, the squad pushed the three players incident and, at least off the field, have reiterated their commitment to qualifying for the Russia World Cup.

“I think the pressure placed on those three players by the rest of the squad, after it happened, sort of addressed the issue,” said Hart. “I don’t think it caused a division. The squad pulled up on them and put them under pressure and put things back to where it should be.

“I think that these young players have to understand it is about more than themselves. It is about their teammates, of course, but also about their country.”

Trinidad and Tobago’s next fixtures are in the Caribbean Cup, as they host the Dominican Republic on 5 October before travelling to face Martinique on 11 October.

They will then reconvene for CONCACAF qualifying action on 11 November when they tackle Costa Rica in Port of Spain for their first outing of the hex. The Warriors are the only Caribbean representatives left in the World Cup race.

Molino, Jones and Williams should be key members of Trinidad and Tobago’s upcoming fixtures. But Hart has warned that they face more drastic penalties if they violate team rules again.

  1. Ah want to say something but o av bee. Saying it for over 2yrs

  2. OK and that’s understandable….. I to know about that because in my school days playing home I got ban for taking a sweat at home b4 a big game lollll and I regret it still but I feel these guys are the ones to take our football back to a good place again not saying we should let them have there way but in this case it was done delt with now let’s look forward if the situation comes up again then we can say u know what this is a,pattern and we don’t want it to affect the team…

  3. ..The truth is once you law down the law and people know you will enforce it, it all falls into place. Who can’t live with the rules will be invited to live without them elsewhwere..

  4. True Lasana Liburd but I just had to ask lollll

  5. Although that decision might be harder if your next match was a million dollar one eh Keith. Lol. Which is not to say that you won’t do the same thing. But it isn’t the best comparison there eh Calvin.

  6. OK understand u loud and clear but we as humans all make mistakes as I said before it wasn’t the right decision on there part but we can live and learn from it…. well in that case all the best to you and your team this season just wanted your point of view as a coach

  7. ..Oh. And by the way, #7 – my captain? He knows that..

  8. ..What? This is some kind of trick question? LOL. What does “for a coach mean”? Fergie, as we say , “buss Beckham face” and sold him off. Was that “harsh for a coach”? Let me spell it out for you: NO PLAYER OF MINE WILL, ONCE CAUGHT, BREAK A CURFEW OR ANY FUNDAMENTAL REGULATION OF MY TEAM OR CLUB AND BE ALLOWED TO PLAY THE NEXT MATCH OR ANY NUMBER OF MATCHES I DECIDE. I am not that guy. Simple. If I step on toes or hurt some feelings – the player should have thought of who his coach is, yes, his team, and what the consequences would be before doing his foolishness..

  9. Keith for a coach u seem rather harsh and quick to jump to the point of dealing with these guys in a certain way u for one should know the importance of team and how certain things can affect a team in some ways so my question to u is… I don’t know the player name but I follow football home because I live in the US but he plays for your team is think he wears #7 (might be wrong) and I also think he is your teams top goal scorer this season so far if he committed this same mistake what would u as a coach and staff do????

  10. ..(And shhhhhhhhh…We fraid we go lost witout dem)……

    • Keith for a coach u seem rather harsh and quick to jump to the point of dealing with these guys in a certain way u for one should know the importance of team and how certain things can affect a team in some ways so my question to u is… I don’t know the player name but I follow football home because I live in the US but he plays for your team is think he wears #7 (might be wrong) and I also think he is your teams top goal scorer this season so far if he committed this same mistake what would u as a coach and staff do????

  11. …The greatest show on earth. Giddem a chance. Is good boys. ..

  12. So everybody allowed one boat ride 72 hours or more before a match without fear of being benched then?
I would’ve never guessed Molino would’ve been in that though.

  13. I am sure that the coach and manager would have dealt with the issue adequately, and do hope that they have apologized to their team mates. I also hope that they feel guilty for the less than outstanding performance of our team in the two games. The issue obviously had an impact on our team.

  14. I am disappointed on these young men, still, I know them personally, having been around them during their U20 days, and know that they are good guys, and very committed to their football and the national team. Coach Hart dealt with the situation as best as he could without disrupting the campaign. What these players need to understand is that they have their lifetime to go on boatrides, etc.. What theycalso have to understand is the “friends and family” that encourage them to break camp are not true to them. Team Management need to sit down and have some heart to heart with them, let them truly understand their roles in team, and their responsibilities to team and public. I am sure this breaking of camp would have created a split in camp, but I also believe that the team has the ability to patch this up. What is upsetting for me is, a loss to Guatemala could have seen us eliminated. I am ecstatic we won, but results could have been different, and nothing should have jeopardized this. We are on to the final stage, amd pray and hope that the players understand their roles, accept the discipline required. I also trust that these players have learnt their lesson.

  15. After reading the report I believe the situation was dealt with in the most appropriate manner for a first time infraction. Anything harsher like dropping them from the crucial match could have done more harm than good and caused more acrimony among the players if the team were forced to do without their services. We know they not big stars but they are important members of the team and after all, yuh know how much fans would cuss if we had lost the match because those guys were dropped! It would be a whole different discussion. If it happens again we expect a more drastic punishment.

  16. I am so upset about this. This is not the standard we should be setting for the kids growing up watching these players and wishing to be like them and play like them at the senior level. Unacceptable! And these are key players to the squad. What example they are setting with this kind of indiscipline? Especially with the extremely difficult final round of World Cup Qualifying we have. It will definitely affect team chemistry and performance when some of our best players are missing due to stupidity off the field! We would have accept if they were injured or suspended for matches, but not this. Ah chut man lol

  17. We can call it an isolated incident but isn’t this the norm with a number of young athletes in this country who become swell headed with success at the secondary school level, most lack the educational background and never go on to do anything… but the conversation is that they were good. The group needs a mentor like a past world cup player to visit them regularly to inspire them to greater things also to help focus and achieve the ultimate goal and propel their careers.

  18. For me, the behaviour was wrong and deserved punishment. Just that, if I was coach, my decision would be based on what is best for the team in the short term and long term. That’s it.

  19. Agreed Lasana.. It’s not black and white but we are discussing some of the greatest players in history who made similar errors.

  20. We’re not reaping the results that we expect from the football team .. the quantity of money allocated to this squad far exceeds any other sporting discipline and yet failures are accepted .. I always thought we play to win every game .. so don’t defend and support poor results

  21. Bench them . Let them come an hour before official training and run drills if that doesn’t work sell them for a dollar . Remember Arnold and JOE PUBLIC . Time to get serious .

  22. Lasana Liburd the players you mentioned are world class player who made it in their careers but before they got there they paid their dues…our player still paying their dues and no where on world class level..

  23. Not to say I accept this behaviour at all. Just that I don’t think it is quite black and white in professional sport.

  24. What I find interesting is Hart’s responses – seems he didn’t know what to do! Would they have done that under Alvin corneal, berthill St Clair or Roderick Warner . I bet not. These guys should not have played against Guatemala. At some point we have to establish standards . And then we get our knickers twisted when the population ask for more. Well this is where it starts .

    • Stacey might like this anecdote. (Not that I want to encourage her any more! Lol)

Ex-Barca coach Johan Cruyff: “One time, Romario asked me if he could miss two days of training to return to Brazil for the carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

“I replied, ‘if you make two goals tomorrow, I’ll give you two extra days rest compared to the other players.’

“The next day, Romario scored his second goal 20 minutes into the game and immediately gestured to me asking to leave.

“He told me, ‘Coach, my plane leaves in an hour’. I had no choice but to let Romario leave for fulfilling his promise.”

    • Yet still two goals were scored by one in question gosh

    • Which is just to say that there isn’t really black and white in professional sport. I’d say you have to consider the pros and cons.
If as coach, I thought that this could affect the long term discipline of my team or cost us the match in the short term. I’d drop them in a flash.
But if I thought otherwise, I’d look for a middle ground.

    • You could never satisfy people in TT u do bad n get crucified n slip up n get tossed to d wolves. ? anyways im on there side

    • Lasana , I like the Romario anecdote but the incentive was declared before and I’m sure that team would have had to agree. Secondly we are struggling to beat Grenada and other shit teams so we have to set standards and raise our quality before we give people Bligh. So yes he scored two goals – what’s the point? Standards are more important. Because we tip toeing around this is exactly why we felt it ok as a country to send Marisa dick to rio and not do the right thing and send no one .

    • Oh gorm. This is a long way from Marisa Dick and Thema Williams. Lol.
Maybe Cruyff was smart and Hart might have to consider how to creative incentives to allow for a few vices once the team benefits. Dunno. Lol.
I know one difference in sport and society. In sport, the scoreboard at the end of the match tells you if you succeeded or not.
Politicians don’t have scoreboards. They have spin doctors. Most people won’t even know what success looked like when it comes to politics/society.

    • it is absolutely NOT a long way from the Dick situation !!!! My comments are about setting standards and having some governing principles . Having the guts to make the tough calls . The principles and standards are the connectors !

    • But Thema and Marisa was about someone scheming to take away a spot that belonged to another player. I don’t see anything like that here.
It is quite possible that their teammates wanted them to play.

    • The decisions making is where the standards are set – someone scheming. These men also schemed out of a team rule. It is in the way that decisions are made by administrators and coaches and those charged to uphold the rules that we set standards .

And who cares if their team mates wanted them to play – I thought the coach was in charge . Hart should have gone to the players and said these men did this and here’s what we have decided. Period.

    • I only said the coaches might have wanted them to play to suggest that they were not unfairly denying anyone a spot. I don’t know if that is true or not.
I don’t believe that Hart spoke to the rest of the team before making decisions either. Just his technical staff.
And remember it is a first time incident and usually that doesn’t merit the harshest possible penalty.
I agree that they were wrong to do what they did. But my decision would have been based on the long time repercussions to my team.

    • The longer term repercussions are exactly what I’m talking about!!! Anyway it matters not because we aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, given no standards Etc. So defend it as much as possible – it set the wrong precedent for the building of a long term , successful and disciplined football program! I done

    • Brian, it is not a matter of defending anything. The process for me is deciding whether it affects your long term goal.
If, as coach, you showed me that it does. Then I would support you because I accept that you considered the right info before making what you felt to be the right decision.
In this case, Hart is the person who had to make the call and if he felt he considered that, then fine. I accept it.
Later on, we will see if he got it right.

  25. Johan Cruyff: “One time, Romario asked me if he could miss two days of training to return to Brazil for the carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

  26. How do you handle Romario?

Excerpt: The fascination with El Baixinho (‘Shorty’) extended to Hiddink’s successor. Bobby Robson arrived at PSV after leaving the meat-grinder of the England job, and while the little Brazilian was his primary source of frustration as well as the primary source of goals, Robson was clearly enthralled. He dedicated a long passage of his autobiography to discussing life with Romário, calling him a “tropical fish” but also telling of assorted transgressions, major and minor. “There was no controlling his private life,” Robson wrote. “To Romário, Friday night was party night, even if we had a game the next day. Alcohol was not the problem – he was a Coca-Cola guy – but he’d stay out until four in the morning and sleep all day before a 7.30pm kick-off. We would take calls from people saying ‘Romário’s been out all night. He left here at four’. He would dance, chat, meet a local lady, carouse with her and then sleep all day to be ‘fresh’ for the game.”

Romário would excuse himself from training with various injury problems, and his work ethic was not, shall we say, one of his strengths. “There were days when he was pathetically lazy,” Robson told the Observer in 1994, “… but you had to pick him because, if you left him out, you might miss a hat-trick! … Hoddle, Robson, Lineker, Beardsley, Barnes, Waddle and others were all special in their ways but Romário, to be frank, is just on another plane … he’s a quite extraordinary finisher. He could get the ball past a goalkeeper from angles which would make you say ‘How did he do that?’”

  27. The nation is coming out to support young men who represent this country in a sport where discipline is key… they ask for support to come to the stadiums and can’t follow simple camp rules …. supposed to be professional athletes it seems their passion is not football but half naked ladies on a cruise when there focus should be the pinnacle of a footballers career a world cup.

  28. see why we need Johnny to open back Zen?
If they was in Zen they wuddah been seasick.
    but…yuh see hoes…once yuh dog suckin egg…

  29. So are you saying these player in their class they good not that good yet

  30. Them lucky i was not on that boat pics will have been posted same night or on the boat im supporter doing my part WDF you doing and calling for support is ah good thing the lime outside and inside the ground was great trrini style so we had a good time after the long drive to Jacksonville

  31. I say yes break down in discipline team morale will negatively affect team later is humans all must be treated fairly for team spirit morale in the family

    • Don’t believe for a second that Messi, Maradona, Pele, Ronaldo, Romario and the like got treated like the rest of the squad though. That isn’t true either. Same for stars like Usain Bolt.
It is a hell of a balancing act at that elite professional level.

  32. But honestly though tgey had to have gorne with they outside oman ..cyah believe their wife/girlfriend encourage this

  33. Ah boat ride…lol.. dem men behaving tusty and unaccostomed

  34. I understand that what they did wasn’t the right thing and at the right time but my question is would it be such of a big deal had we won both of the game??? Lasana Liburd

    • Well, they were fined before the games. As for fans? Maybe not. But that is natural too. Whatever you did before a loss is considered part of the reason for it.

    • Yes it’s natural especially when it comes to our fans….. A mistake was made it was delt with by the staff now let’s move on these are young guys they are going to make mistakes on and off the field but we can’t break them down especially with the hex coming and like it or not they are players that are important to the team and us making it to the WC

  35. I remember this anecdote from Steve Bruce on Sir Alex Ferguson:
We were at Manchester town hall, a civic reception, because we’d won the League again. All suited and booted, of course. Red tie, white shirt, grey slacks, blazer, the big crest.
‘Eric turns up. He’s been growing this beard. He’s got long hair, ripped jeans, flip flops and this multi-coloured coat down to his knees, one of those real hippy ones.
Now, the players had fines that went into a pot, and we’d spend it on a day out at Chester races end of the season. So the players were all looking at Eric, and they weren’t having it. I was captain and they said, “Go to Fergie, make sure he knows Cantona needs a fine”.
‘So I sidled over. “Boss, the lads aren’t happy with Eric’s appearance”. Fergie’s on the red wine. He puts down his glass, looks over at Eric. “Tell them from me, Steve,” he says, “that if they can play like him next year, they can all come as f***ing Joseph”.’

  36. I spent my $$$ to go Jacksonville for game to hear this shit now that not fear to real fans and bandwagonist alike we give up time and $$$ to support i say one off thats it they can afford to come home for boat ride not on my tax paying $$$ to run WHORES

  37. Akins Olatunji Vidale or Paul Jason Leacock, what is a union view? As a first time offence, is it generally too drastic to suspend a player?

  38. That behaviour is highly unprofessional and immature. There is no excuse for that kind of unprofessionalism. These boys need to know what is an obsession for success.. To qualify for the World Cup must be their obsession.. Everything else is second including your wife or girlfriend.. They will be there when you qualify.. They would want to be with you more. Their actions and decision has me baffled.. Partying 48hrs before a huge game is unacceptable. Totally childish and irresponsible. I would be fuming if they were my teammates as it shows a total lack of respect to the fans, sponsors; everyone. Certainly a reason to be dropped and they’re lucky the manger gave them a chance.

  39. Well I heard a story about Dwight Yorke under Beenhakker..Dwight nearly crapped himself when the coach pulled him up in front of ALL the guys (and his place on the team was threatened as a result)….After that everyone knew who was in charge if they weren’t already sure! No ranking ting after dat na!! Collective or buss!! Sometimes men need reality checks to reassess their approach.

  40. I bet you they never did that at their respective clubs.

  41. Mentor will not pull that stunt with their clubs

    • I heard that in fact there might have been an incident with two of the players at their clubs too. But then even Dwight Yorke as pulling stunts like that at Manchester United.
What can you do if the player is not mature enough to understand the consequences of his decision?
Hopefully they will buck up quickly.

    • ..LOL. What can you do? Not pick them is what you can do. Look. A coach cannot be all things to all men. Players AND THE PUBLIC must know what you stand for..

    • Well. Other than that of course Keith! Lol

    • The coach handled the situation magnificently. Showed great situational leadership and applied the right punishment for the infraction. Because of his astute, flexible leadership we qualified for the hex and he simultaneously will have three players working their a$$ off to regain his and their teammates trust. A win win situation for everyone, including supporters who get the opportunity to support the team for 10 more WC qualifiers. Keith – not every job needs a hammer.

    • We are a people of ill disciplined like children we do as much as we can get away with how our work ethic is different out side last week in Miami we met a security guard in a mall from trini pulling to shifts on his feet he said out here is $$$ why cant we be so here home work hard a nd playing harder like me we are not patriotic just dont care dam the coach management ha s to put down their foot now for every one break the rules dont play dropped off team set the example for next team that was not done in the past it time it starts now fix this shit now i had a placard in the oval for Jamaica game saying YORKE & LATAPY TRAITORS banished to WHORE HOUSE i supporting football long time and not taking that shit again to pay my $$$ to see tired drunk players we go fete after the jobs done all who encourage them just as guilty knowing the crucial home game to come do you all remember how the Australians nearly kill Warne when he was getting fat and forced him to stay in shape for the nation cricket team

    • ..Yeah Carlos? Well maybe this one did. Maybe the hammer would have produced two better performances. Coaches are afraid of players man. So be it..

    • Agree to disagree Carlos. If I’m the coach, not only they were not playing they were going back to their club immediately

    • The coach compromised his leadership ability in my opinion

    • I dunno Brent. If I think it will affect the long term goals of the team and cause me as coach to lose my moral authority, I’d drop them.
But if I think that it is not that dire, I would look for a middle ground too. Results matter in a tournament football.

    • I hear you Brent. We definitely differ on this one. An appropriate compromise was called for and delivered. The players were punished with a hefty fine – which should serve as a deterrence going forward – and the team prevailed to make it to the next rounds, thanks in part to two key goals by one of those involved in the questionable behavior. I bet you that said players are now even more committed to coach Hart and the team, and will do all that is possible to make amends.

    • So what if he brought the situation to the team and they said just find them and let’s move forward all of us just having our opinion but only they would really know what happen

  42. Very disappointing behavior from these young men. People do make mistakes, and it is incumbent on the coach and Manager to mentor them so this WILL BE the last time that they show disrespect to themselves and their fellow players.

  43. They need to apologise people batting for them and that’s what they do jeez

  44. We want the best for our national athletes but they don’t even want the best for themselves…no discipline. REAL TALK
