Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team coach Stephen Hart confirmed today that three key Soca Warriors were fined for breaking team camp, just two days before their crucial Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier against Guatemala at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on 2 September.
The breach of discipline was made public, on Sunday 11 September, by I95.5fm radio show host Andre Baptiste, although the players were not named.
Hart also declined to name the misbehaving Warriors. However, Wired868 understands that the trio were United States-based professionals Kevin Molino, Joevin Jones and Mekeil Williams, who represent MLS clubs Orlando City, Seattle Sounders and Colorado Rapids respectively.
Trinidad and Tobago won 6-0.

Contrary to the I95.5FM report, the three players were sanctioned for their behaviour in front of their teammates on 31 August. And the incident in question—the players snuck out to attend a boat party—actually happened three days before the Guatemala game and not 48 hours before.
Hart said he considered it to be an internal matter, which the technical staff dealt with immediately and firmly.
“Usually we deal with these sort of matters internally and we dealt with it as soon as we found out what happened,” Hart told Wired868, “and we dealt with it with a fairly hefty fine.”
The Warriors coach did not give the figure of the fine but it was substantial enough to have been in excess of the players’ bonus for advancing to the CONCACAF hex.
“In all honesty, we haven’t had to deal with a situation like this before,” said Hart. “We have had minor stuff with players breaking in-house rules. But not to the extent that they were out of the hotel.”
Hart pointed to Chile midfield star Arturo Vidal, who crashed his car while driving drunk just before the 2015 Copa America tournament. The Chilean FA allowed Vidal to remain with the team for the competition, which Chile won for the first time in their history.

“It is not something that is unique to Trinidad and Tobago,” said Hart. “Usually these things are dealt with in-house whenever possible.”
Ironically, Vidal was allegedly kicked out of the Chile squad on 5 September 2016, after he was again caught breaking camp.
Did Hart feel that the technical staff dealt with the infraction seriously enough? Did he consider more drastic action, just two days before a decisive World Cup qualifier?
The Warriors coach said his technical staff weighed up the nature of the incident, the fact that it was a first-time discrepancy and the possible effect of withdrawing the players’ services from the team, which may have put their teammates in a disadvantageous situation.
“It was a first time situation as far as I know,” said the Warriors coach, “and you have to ask yourself: Do you punish the whole team for a situation of three players?

“You are going into a crucial game and the players have broken team rules. We thought we dealt with it sufficiently in terms of it being a fine and [handling] it in-house.
“If this was habitual, they would probably have been sent home.”
Wired868 understands that Molino apologised to the coach personally for his behaviour. All three players started both games and Jones scored a double against Guatemala.
However, the Warriors were well below par in the two qualifiers. They played to a scrappy 2-2 draw with Guatemala on 2 September and then suffered a record defeat against the United States with a 4-0 loss in Jacksonville, Florida.
Did the breach of discipline—and possibly the technical staff’s response to it—affect team chemistry?
Hart claimed that, far from being divided or further demonstrating slipping standards, the squad pushed the three players incident and, at least off the field, have reiterated their commitment to qualifying for the Russia World Cup.
“I think the pressure placed on those three players by the rest of the squad, after it happened, sort of addressed the issue,” said Hart. “I don’t think it caused a division. The squad pulled up on them and put them under pressure and put things back to where it should be.

Trinidad and Tobago’s next fixtures are in the Caribbean Cup, as they host the Dominican Republic on 5 October before travelling to face Martinique on 11 October.
They will then reconvene for CONCACAF qualifying action on 11 November when they tackle Costa Rica in Port of Spain for their first outing of the hex. The Warriors are the only Caribbean representatives left in the World Cup race.
Molino, Jones and Williams should be key members of Trinidad and Tobago’s upcoming fixtures. But Hart has warned that they face more drastic penalties if they violate team rules again.

I would’ve never guessed Molino would’ve been in that though.
I am sure that the coach and manager would have dealt with the issue adequately, and do hope that they have apologized to their team mates. I also hope that they feel guilty for the less than outstanding performance of our team in the two games. The issue obviously had an impact on our team.
I am disappointed on these young men, still, I know them personally, having been around them during their U20 days, and know that they are good guys, and very committed to their football and the national team. Coach Hart dealt with the situation as best as he could without disrupting the campaign. What these players need to understand is that they have their lifetime to go on boatrides, etc.. What theycalso have to understand is the “friends and family” that encourage them to break camp are not true to them. Team Management need to sit down and have some heart to heart with them, let them truly understand their roles in team, and their responsibilities to team and public. I am sure this breaking of camp would have created a split in camp, but I also believe that the team has the ability to patch this up. What is upsetting for me is, a loss to Guatemala could have seen us eliminated. I am ecstatic we won, but results could have been different, and nothing should have jeopardized this. We are on to the final stage, amd pray and hope that the players understand their roles, accept the discipline required. I also trust that these players have learnt their lesson.
After reading the report I believe the situation was dealt with in the most appropriate manner for a first time infraction. Anything harsher like dropping them from the crucial match could have done more harm than good and caused more acrimony among the players if the team were forced to do without their services. We know they not big stars but they are important members of the team and after all, yuh know how much fans would cuss if we had lost the match because those guys were dropped! It would be a whole different discussion. If it happens again we expect a more drastic punishment.

I am so upset about this. This is not the standard we should be setting for the kids growing up watching these players and wishing to be like them and play like them at the senior level. Unacceptable! And these are key players to the squad. What example they are setting with this kind of indiscipline? Especially with the extremely difficult final round of World Cup Qualifying we have. It will definitely affect team chemistry and performance when some of our best players are missing due to stupidity off the field! We would have accept if they were injured or suspended for matches, but not this. Ah chut man lol
We can call it an isolated incident but isn’t this the norm with a number of young athletes in this country who become swell headed with success at the secondary school level, most lack the educational background and never go on to do anything… but the conversation is that they were good. The group needs a mentor like a past world cup player to visit them regularly to inspire them to greater things also to help focus and achieve the ultimate goal and propel their careers.
Well, Kenwyne was a World Cup player and I understand his behaviour is good where such things are concerned.
You can’t punish them for what other athletes are doing though. First time is first time.
I’m not really on the incident but the mentality of the group… sometimes you need someone who has done already to be there to inspire them. I’m just focused on the mental side of things at this point.

You are going along the right trail but what I would say is modern day football has changed the demand is higher, information and social media is greater, player’s value have increased. So what was tolerated then isn’t so much now. How did it go for Adriano or even Balotelli
Balotelli’s problems have little to do with partying or off field trouble.
I agree it is harder now. But the most important thing is still three points. Once their behaviour doesn’t hurt the team, some players will always have a bit of latitude.
What I find interesting is Hart’s responses – seems he didn’t know what to do! Would they have done that under Alvin corneal, berthill St Clair or Roderick Warner . I bet not. These guys should not have played against Guatemala. At some point we have to establish standards . And then we get our knickers twisted when the population ask for more. I know one difference in sport and society. In sport, the scoreboard at the end of the match tells you if you succeeded or not.

The decisions making is where the standards are set – someone scheming. These men also schemed out of a team rule. It is in the way that decisions are made by administrators and coaches and those charged to uphold the rules that we set standards .
And who cares if their team mates wanted them to play – I thought the coach was in charge . Hart should have gone to the players and said these men did this and here’s what we have decided. Period.

If, as coach, you showed me that it does. Then I would support you because I accept that you considered the right info before making what you felt to be the right decision.
In this case, Hart is the person who had to make the call and if he felt he considered that, then fine. I accept it.

The nation is coming out to support young men who represent this country in a sport where discipline is key… they ask for support to come to the stadiums and can’t follow simple camp rules …. supposed to be professional athletes it seems their passion is not football but half naked ladies on a cruise when there focus should be the pinnacle of a footballers career a world cup.

Well, they were fined before the games. As for fans? Maybe not. But that is natural too. Whatever you did before a loss is considered part of the reason for it.

A mistake was made it was delt with by the staff now let’s move on these are young guys they are going to make mistakes on and off the field but we can’t break them down especially with the hex coming and like it or not they are players that are important to the team and us making it to the WC

That behaviour is highly unprofessional and immature. There is no excuse for that kind of unprofessionalism. These boys need to know what is an obsession for success.. To qualify for the World Cup must be their obsession.. Everything else is second including your wife or girlfriend.. They will be there when you qualify.. They would want to be with you more. Their actions and decision has me baffled.. Partying 48hrs before a huge game is unacceptable. Totally childish and irresponsible. I would be fuming if they were my teammates as it shows a total lack of respect to the fans, sponsors; everyone. Certainly a reason to be dropped and they’re lucky the manger gave them a chance.

Carlos.. I love having fun but business time is business time and I’m curious to hear what the other players thought of their behaviour. It was a huge game. A game we could’ve lost and its bye bye Russia. If I was the manger they wouldn’t play. It’s as simple as that. I regard this as a mistake that warrants a serious response. If I didn’t drop them how would I look to the other players fighting and sacrificing to play? You could lose respect as a manger.. Without question I would not play you..
I hear you. Coachman had a tough decision to make. We must admit that dropping them could have also impacted team moral and could have led to a worst performance if the other players didn’t support such severe actions. The coach handled the situation magnificently. Showed great situational leadership and applied the right punishment for the infraction. Because of his astute, flexible leadership we qualified for the hex and he simultaneously will have three players working their a$$ off to regain his and their teammates trust. I dunno Brent. If I think it will affect the long term goals of the team and cause me as coach to lose my moral authority, I’d drop them.
But if I think that it is not that dire, I would look for a middle ground too. Results matter in a tournament football.
I hear you Brent. We definitely differ on this one. An appropriate compromise was called for and delivered. The players were punished with a hefty fine – which should serve as a deterrence going forward – and the team prevailed to make it to the next rounds, thanks in part to two key goals by one of those involved in the questionable behavior. I bet you that said players are now even more committed to coach Hart and the team, and will do all that is possible to make amends.

Very disappointing behavior from these young men. People do make mistakes, and it is incumbent on the coach and Manager to mentor them so this WILL BE the last time that they show disrespect to themselves and their fellow players.
